I would be excited to see the iPhone 5 in 32/64 flavours, not because I need a 32GB iPhone, but because it would mean the iPad 3 would come in 32/64/128. Then I could go back to the lowest priced iPad.

However, I doubt this will happen. I think 16GB is more than enough for most people and if Apple had 32GB for the base memory of both the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 then they would lose a lot of money from people who otherwise would have paid $100 because 16GB isn't enough.

You are mistakenly assuming that a 64 GB iPhone means their base model would be 32 GB. If anything they would transition to 3 GB offerings (like an iTouch and iPad). Whether that would be 8/32/64 (iTouch) or 16/32/64 (iPad) remains to be seen. My guess is 16/32/64 this fall for the iPhone 5.

as the iPhone has been capped at 32gb for nearly two and a half years, i'm very much hoping for 64gb this fall.

Thanks, you've been a great help. I am really only half-expecting 64GB now. If we get it, then great, but I'm not going to set myself up for disappointment. But I just think we might be seeing it.

After some research it seems the price of 64GB NAND chips MAY be in the price range of last years cost of a 32GB NAND chip. This means there is hope that Apple will produce a 64GB model. But this is definitely not proof that they will. It means there is definitely a savings in this part, but they may chose to spend that savings on upgrading another part.

We'll see, but I am somewhat hopeful....just not convinced yet.

That is certainly good news and thank you for finding out what you could.

...now, if we only knew how much the new processor, camera, RAM, and casing cost.

If you need to carry that much media with you, how about getting an iPad or an iPod in addition to the iPhone? That's what Apple wants you to do.

Soon there will be iPod nanos with 64 GB of storage while the capacity of the iPhone remains capped at 32 GB.

Not just media, but apps and documents as well.

While Apple's competitors are also topped out at the same 32GB, at least they offer the option of using microSD cards to significantly increase what you can carry on you. Having to use a data plan for iCloud simply doesn't compare.

The reason I got the iPhone in the first place is so I didn't have to carry a phone and an iPod at the same time. If "get another device" is Apple answer to 64GB that is not an answer IMO. Also, looking at the screen size of a Nano, I cannot imagine being able to look through 64GB of data to easily and quickly find anything.

None of the cloud storage devices on the market (Amazon or iCloud) replace the need for on-device storage because the amount of storage is so limited. iCLoud is 5GB and I think Amazon is only about 5GB for free then you have to pay. Even the music piece of iCloud requires you to download the song to your device. The only way a cloud service could replace the need for a 64GB device is if you could store at least 32GB in the cloud which neither iCloud nor Amazon do right now (and since it is beta we don't know how pricing on Google Music will be).

A 64GB iPhone would have use to some people and I would buy one in a heartbeat if available. Other options right now just do not match up to having 64GB of onboard storage.

Quite.

That is odd too. There was supposed to be a 32GB (internal) + 32GB (SD) version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, but that appears to have been quietly dropped. And SDXC cards & drives (for >32GB) have been about for a while now, but (AFAIK) no phone incorporates one yet.

So the Galaxy S2 gives you a potential of 48 GB (16 internal + 32 SD), which is a good deal more than the iPhone 4 AND with the option of carrying an additional 32 GB microSD with you in a very light small card. So hopefully the iPhone 5 overs a 64 GB option to keep up with the competition, even if it's at a higher price point. In fact, it would almost HAVE to be at a higher price point given that 64 single NAND chips have not declined in price that much over the last several years. I'd happily pay an additional $100 - $150 for 64 GB.

For those who have a Galaxy 2 - I'm curious how much of the 48 GB could be used for APP storage, and whether you can break up a music library between the SD storage and the internal storage and have both available in a music player at the same time?

i have a 64gb ipad. i'm hoping they release a 128gb iPad next year.

Remember that before the iPhone ever existed (late June 2007), the iPod (Classic) was already at 160 GB (I think). And years before that it was at 60 GB - released in October 2004 - yes almost 7 YEARS ago. And people had no trouble filling that up with just MUSIC. And this is when the compression standard was at 128 kbps.

Now I have a full multimedia iPhone device that I store not only music (at 256 kbps - or DOUBLE the kbps that was the standard 7 years ago), but also apps (along with the underlying app data), video, photos and a much bigger storage requirement for the O/S itself, and I'm topped out at almost HALF of what was available 7 years ago and 5 TIMES less than what was available 4 years ago.

Yes, I do understand the cost and tech reasons of flash vs a HD, but given the existence and availability of 64 GB NAND chips, we need 64 GB iPhone NOW, at any price point! And no, I don't want to carry around a second device (i.e. iPod Touch or Classic).

well said. i would be curious to know the cost of 32gb chips when the 3gs debuted compared to the cost of 64gb chips today.

my number one storage goal with the iPhone is to carry all my music above 2 stars (~24gb), photos (~10gb), apps (~10gb) and have 10-15 gb free for taking photos and video. i don't think this is unreasonable - we're not talking anywhere near my iTunes library which is 2.04tb.

storage matters.

Personally, I don't need it because I don't store that much videos or apps like I used to, but I DO want Apple to release one. In fact, I don't mind if Apple just dominates the industry so it forces others to drop prices on their products. I even want to see iPad just wipe out the competition and then hoping RIM can wise up and start selling the 16GB Playbook for under $199. I prefer the PB over the iPad 2 for MY needs. Mac users aren't as many as Windows PC users, but does that stop Mac users from enjoying their product? Difference is I can enjoy a nicer OS at a cheaper price just like people who have the TouchPad.

I am starting to see Amazon selling 32GB microSD cards for $44. So while people will pay an extra $100 for double the storage for an iPhone, I want a phone with a removable memory slot w/ 32GB already built-in. If the 32GB iPhone goes for $199, that means we will see others putting more 32GB phones out there for nearly the same price. A 16GB smartphone should start selling for $99 with contract. Walmart is going to sell Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S II for that same price for new customers and that has 16GB I believe.

Apple almost dictates the pace and price for the rest of the industry. They can get away with things others can't do. So hoping its competitors can wise up and not feel so arrogant or confident that their product will sell for the same price of an iPhone or iPad when all it really does there is collect dust.

Yup, I'm really glad to see they put it in. That was what I wanted most out of today's announcement.

Now it's time to start getting rid of the crap in my music collection that I can do without to be able to fit just about all of the iPhone worthy tunes onto the new gorgeous, pure, sweet, virgin 64gigs...Weird Al's greatest hits...keeper. Biz Markie...adios.

Three years I've been waiting for this more than any other improvement...happy day!

looks like I was right. 64GB :) $400 is pretty steep, but in line with what I figured.

Not getting on though, I don't think. I'll probably get a used 4 and then get the 5 next year.

Based on my research, the price takes me a bit by surprise. This tells me some of the other components, such as the A5, cost more than the components they replaced.
