Mine's definitely warmer/yellower than my wife's 3G. But I actually think that a big part of it is the way the brightness control works, and its default setting. At the dimmest and brightest settings, the brightness (if not the tint) of the two versions is pretty much the same. But the curve in between is very different. So if you set the sliders in the same place—like where Apple sets the default—the new phone looks way dimmer and dingier. Slide it up a little, though, and they look much more similar, just with the different color temp.

I bet most are like this. I don't think I mind, except mine also has a bit of a gradient, making it yellower towards the bottom. Reminds me a LOT of the color temp and slight gradient on my new iMac.

If the sequence was reversed, you think everyone would be upset about the new screens looking too blue/cold?? A big part of it might just be what you're used to.

So I think there might be something else going on - if you compare a 3G and a 3GS side by side and go into the Brightness settings, you'll notice that the 3GS gets significantly more dim when Auto Brightness is turned on. The 3G gets slightly dimmer (at least with the light where I am), but the 3GS gets much more dim.

Turning Auto brightness off on the 3GS makes the screen look closer to the 3G (when brightness is set to the same on both - I tried about 40%).

Any ideas?

Auto-Brightness has nothing to do with the screen, it's just the crappy light sensor(which basically just lowers or raises the brightness exactly like you can do manually, nothing special)....which works horribly anyways, I always leave it off.

I liked the cool color hue of the original iPhone best. The warmish tint introduced in the 3G was not a great move IMHO. When I get my 3G S today I will compare the screen values of all three so we can see for ourselves what the variances are between generations.

Man my launch iphone 2g had an amazing display. I had to return it cause the sim ejector was broken, thats when the warm screens entered my life :(

Can no one actually read threads? Do you all just chomp at the bit as soon as you see the thread title?

These screens aren't supposed to be warmer. I have held my 3G S next to a friend's new 3G S and his was much closer to the 3G, maybe 500 degrees warmer, if that.

As you can see in the picture I posted earlier, my 3G actually has a very yellow cast to the screen. This is what were complaining about.

Awesome, I now have this problem on my replacement 3G S, which I got to solve wifi issues, which it hasn't solved. Really bad experience overall with the 3G S, though I never had any problems with my 3G.

If it was just a warmer screen, I'd be fine with it, but the top half is cool and then it fades into warm at the bottom, so anything white below the center has a yellowish tinge.

Gonna wait a day or two to see if it clears up, then it's back to Apple for yet another replacement.

go re-read my post more closely...do you need the "/sarcasm" tag attached?

My old 1st Gen iPod Touch has a brighter screen than my 2nd Gen iPhone 3G, even with the 3G's brightness set higher it is a tad more yellow. As a previous poster stated, Apple changed the color temperature after the 1st gen Touch and iPhone's.

The one on the right looks more pinky blue. I like the one on the right better.
The left one looks more yellow in there to me.

Darn.

go to an apple store... they have them lined up.. check out the differences.. its there... they vary.. theres very crisp bright screens.. and dingy ones... very slight, but noticeable... i want a crisp bright one.. i want it to burn my eyes...

That's part of the problem. Like I said, call them and arrange an replacement.

ive got the same problem - its not the whole screen thats tinged, just the bottom 1/3 of it

not to noticable at first in normal orientation, but very noticable when you try reading text in landscape mode

My friend's shipped from China and is fine. Mine shipped straight from Memphis, TN and it's yellow.

crap did yours ship on the 18th via FedEx overnight?

If so this sucks...you see my parents won't let me open mine till monday, so there is nothing I can do about it yet.
