Can you have them open and test your replacement iPhone in the Apple store, to make sure your not just getting another dud? I'd hate to go through the replacement process just to get another yellow screened iphone.

lol my 3gs doesn't have any problems whatsoever with the color.. picked it up from the apple store on release day. Will post pics in a bit.

Timb - did you get your new phone via overnight yet? Anxious to hear the report on it.

I have three 3G S's here. I have a 3G that I fought hard for. Whites are pure white. Stunning, perfect phone. Hubbie's 3g is yellow tint. He wanted to give up on the swap game and just suck it up.

All three 3G S here will best his phone. Mine? None has the pure whites mine does. All three 3G S's have varying degrees to the white. One is better, the next 2 are very close to each other. But none have a distinct "yellow-tint" like Timb shows.

Which is more accurate? The greens are more accurate by far on the "warmer" (more yellow white) phones. The phones that go more to the cleaner whites have a blue/pinky vibe. It's a matter of preference.
I personally believe the 2 different bents to the color out there benefit either readers or media. The more yellowy whites (I feel) benefit reading email/text. Much like the Kindle isn't pure white.

It is what it is. Certainly those that have the "looks like my dog peed on it after taking a vitamin B pill" need to get it fixed. But I question the subtle change to a slightly tintier white as being inaccurate. I'm sort of finding they are less "blarey" for reading. And perhaps technically more accurate.

It certainly is a curse to have more than one phone in the house! My 2nd choise 3G S has a slight pitch to the glass where you feel the right bezel. Do I swap and risk? IDK. Going to let hubby decide if it's ok with him.. This is why it took me almost 2 days to get up the nerve to buy them and why they sat unopened for most of yesterday. This is a sucky game. But the build quality is MUCH better this year. I've yet to hear ONE post of light leak.

my 3GS.

Entraik - what are you comparing it to? Most phones will look great till you compare it to another 3G S or 3G.

Timb - did you get your new phone via overnight yet? Anxious to hear the report on it.

It'll be here tomorrow. (Monday.)

It's true that the same LCDs can vary greatly from each other; that's why people who do graphics work buy color calibrators. So a little variance between units is normal.

However, what I got? That's not a little variance, it's a problem.

Timb - There's no doubt your phone is screwed up. I'm sure in the end, you're going to be happy. I know what it's like to suffer to get there.

I do think the build quality is better. I still haven't seen a single "light leak" thread. Wow was THAT a problem last year. Overall, I think the display issues aren't as bad either. While there are some like Timb's, it just seems far less to me - OR.... it's the peeps comparing their 1st gens to 3G S.
I personally ignore all comparisons to the 1st gen. That's SO 2008. We all know those are different breeds entirely.

I have a 3gs preorder from apple direct. Is my first Iphone ever, I do not see a yellow tint.

so i took my yellowed 3gs to the apple store in irvine spectrum and compared to no less than 8 display models (7 had no yellow, 1 had silght) - mine is clearly the most yellow of the bunch

even one of the sales staff went "what the hell happened to your iphone" before i even mentioned the yellowing

my iphone looks like timb's pic earlier

unfortunaly they can only do the exchange through the genius bar which has no open appointments till tues, i guess its cool since theyre completely out of 16gb anyway

C - That's excellent you're golden. Got any pics on that? Well, you say it looks like Timb's eh? Good enough.

Yellow at bottom of screen

The first thing that I noticed was the yellow screen compared to my 3G. Upon further inspection, the bottom of my display is much more yellow than the top. If the display was uniformly yellow I wouldn't think much of it. But since the display is much more yellow at the bottom I think that it is more likely a defective display.

jay- while mine is all yellow, it is much more noticable at the bottom 1/3-1/2
in normal aspect you cant see the gradient too much, but go into landscape mode, pull up any espn.com article and flip it form L-R to R-L landscape modes and you can easily see the gradient

i tried taking pics but it doesnt come out well - really makes it look more yellow than it is, i can only do side by side to my 2G which is very blue/greyis in tint in comparision

Has anyone seen any real success from exchanging their phone? I hate that this is an issue for so many. I have noticed that my phone is noticeably more yellow than most 3Gs Ive seen on display, and even a little more than my wifes new 3GS. :(

My first 3G S had signal issues so I swapped it out through the ATT store. My second phone - the one I have now - is horrible as far as the yellow goes. I went back today to check some things out. They have a 16 GB 3G S on display and when I compared mine with that, it was night and day. Mine was dingy and basically - piss yellow. It was blurry, washed out and looked like crap. The display one was crisp, white, even brighter (both were at max brightness). Colors were superb as well. I asked to see my old 3G S and it was better, but not by much.

There should not be that much variation on screen color out of the box. I will be taking mine back to the store and will go buy a new phone at the Apple store. I might wait a bit and see if they get new stock in or something. I will not be stuck with a phone that looks like crap.

I honestly wish I had my 3G back. It was beautiful, white and crisp. Hell, I didn't even know about this yellow issue during the 3G launch. My phone just looked really pale and yellow and decided to do some searching. Glad I was not the only one.

Just like last year.

And it'll continue to happen unless everyone fills out the iPhone Feedback form to send directly to corporate.

Hopefully to beg for a temperature/calibration control or allow 3rd party apps to.

Here are 2 comparison shots. The phone is a 3G S - 32GB Black phone. The left image is just like you would see if you had it in your hands. The right image is adjusted to how it SHOULD look. This is how my 3G looked. The phone is at MAX brightness. Also, if you notice - there is more yellow at the bottom of the screen than at the top.

Couple of points:

1. Posting pics on here of this sort of stuff is fairly pointless, since depending on how the viewer's monitor is calibrated they could look very different.
2. My 3GS is bluer than my wife's 3G. Both look fine, just a bit different. Go figure...

Can I???

Didn't notice it until I compared it with my 3g. My 3gs is definitely yellow.
Can I just exchange it in an Apple store for a new one and are they able to check it before I leave the store???
Thanks for any replies.:):)

What's real fun is if you have one that's slightly different and they are sitting on a table or you're holding them side by side - switch them. Really throws a twist on things.

Anyone know how accurate it is to compare colors via the camera? That's a whole 'nother ballgame. Differences are in the camera as well and I found that compareing 3G's to each other.

Husband's 3G definitely has a green push compared to my 3G which lends blue or pink. 3GS has the same green push (yellow?). Great test is outdoor plants. Blueish leaves are WAY falsely bluer on my 3G and while it's more accurate on my 3GS, the same blueish leaves lean slightly toward the green side. Yellows are hotter than they are a bit I think. But it's definitely more accurate.

I assume the camera's image on the screen reflects the same temperature issues we see on white text pages. Is striving for accuracy on the camera or faces in pics/videos the way to go vs. obsessing over text? I think so for me.

Yes! This is my situation exactly. It's very noticeable when you load a blank safari page in landscape.

Very annoying!
