does it have a refurbished serial?

refurbished?

i plan on exchanging for a better screen but don't want a refurbished unit.

Mine has a new serial number beginning with 8. I think that the refurbs begin with 5 or something. It is a week 24 and is still yellowish. It's much better than my orginal 3GS though and actually looks better than my wife's 3G.

Looks perfect - although I hope that's just dirt in the middle right of your screen and not a dead pixel ...

Ha! Yeah, that was some big piece of dust/crud that came from the camera when I took the lenscap off...haven't used the SLR in a long time :)

It's definately warmer than my wife's 3G, but not overly so I don't think. As far as the yellow at the bottom, every once in a while I'll look at my iPhone at a weird angle or in some sort of odd lighting and I think it looks a bit yellow at the bottom, but then when I look directly at it looks fine. I think my eyes are playing tricks on me.
I got paranoid after reading about these yellow screen problems, and I thought that MAYBE mine had it too one night when looking at something in Safari, but I have to try so hard to even think I see anything, it's probably fine. I think it's like you say, at some angles, and when the auto-brightness dims the backlight sometimes, it can look a bit warmer/yellower than normal, towards the bottom half.

I never got a good look at the 3G screen in person but the 3GS is definitely way warmer than the 1st gen. I'm starting to get used to it though. Don't think it has one of the bad screens.

I bought my 16GB White iPhone 3GS on Monday and immediately noticed the yellow tint on the screen (coming from an iPhone 2G). I decided today that I didn't like the white (reminds me of an Oreo cookie the way it's black on one side) and that I wanted 32GB after all, so I went to exchange it for a black 32GB, also praying that I would get lucky and get a good screen. No such luck. The black one also had a yellow tinted screen, and after reading complaints here about the very bottom being more yellow than the rest of the screen, I noticed that too (although it is faint enough to be not noticeable in most cases).

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I have a feeling playing the exchange game would be futile at this point, as I suspect there are more yellow screens out there than not. I think that eventually I can convince my brain that the yellow tinted white is the "correct" white if I use it long enough, so the question is how often will I notice the slightly darker tinted bottom.

The funny thing is that every single display 16GB blacks that I compared against in the Apple store (I looked at 4 or 5 of them) had what in my mind were the correct whites. I wonder why that is. Hopefully maybe a future firmware update can correct the tint...a google search showed that Apple released a fix for the original 3G for this same issue. Does anyone actually remember using this fix and having it work?

got a replacement from local apple...no dark screen or yellow tint anymore.
here's our 5 ranging from 1g - 3gs...try and guess.

I had the same damn experience, every one I looked at in the store looked perfect! My replacement comes in tomorrow or saturday, we'll see then if it's any better or worse.

Am i the only who thinks the 3Gs (3rd pic) has a bit too much white going on...as in its kinda...washed out. Maybe not.

We used to encounter such problem in Singapore for the iPhone 3G. We have found that only certain models have screens that are yellow-tinted. So which models have yellow-tinted screen?

Swapped my 32 White for another today due to the bottom being yellow and the top being just fine.

It looks like the replacement has the same issue... /sigh

I guess i'll head back next week or wait until they do screen replacements in stores.

Just had my black 32GB iPhone 3GS replaced about 5 hours ago for a yellow bottom on my screen. The new one does not have any issues at all except for a small separation/dust collector between the bezel and glass - but it's not enough to make me want a return.

EDIT: Now that I'm inside in a moderately dark room, I can see this phone is the same build week (25) as my first and has the same issue with a yellow tint on the bottom of the screen. I don't know if I care enough to return it despite it being defective. The Genius who approved my swap told me he saw no tint...

The screen on my 3GS has bottom being yellow and the top being white I also have a dead pixel. My "genius" appointment is on Sunday. I hope I can get it exchange!

Exchanged my phone today because it had a pee like yellow to it. New one has the same problem.

Also wondering why the display phones look perfect. I compared my phone with every single one and to my surprise, mine was the only one with a yellow tint.

Thanks Apple.

What do you guys think of this? Worth taking back? For reference, the 3GS is on the left and my launch 3G is on the right...

Just got my new 3Gs. The replacement has a whiter screen than the one I brought in, but it's still yellow. Actually, now, when I compare mine to the display models one model is more yellow and one is more purple. This may be a happy medium for me. I don't want to go through the hasstle of another return, that's for sure

I'm tired of dealing with geniuses. I'm just happy i got one of the better screens. They always say 'i can't see it' or some BS.

One had the audacity to lecture me...saying "The screen looks fine to me. Colours will never be the same. If you were paying £5000 for a product then you can expect perfect colours but the laptops (MBP/MBs) and phones are consumer devices so...". I just kept thinking...'seriously?'

He then apologised for his initial defensive nature after a fellow genius saw my washed out issue and made the diagnosis.

I mean its only a £440 device...chicken change really

I just had an interesting thought that's more along the lines of playing devil's advocate than trying to explain the yellowish screen. I'll walk you through my line of reasoning.

Let's say that Apple purposely altered the tint of the screen. If you look at multiple reviews (Gizmodo, for example), there are mentions of the "warmer" color. I asked myself, "why would they do that purposely?"

The short answer is eye fatigue and eye strain. Traditionally, a warmer screen allows users to use the device for a longer period of time. By warming the whites, text is easier on the eyes (ever tried reading an e-book on the iPhone 3G for three hours? Your eyes will melt and your head will explode).

Taking it a step further, there have been recent reports that Apple may be selling e-books in the iTunes store in the near future. What if Apple purposely warmed the screen to make reading these books easier?

I was reading a book Amazon e-book on my new 3GS today, and was able to read for twice as long as my old 3G.

I know it's far out there, and I don't necessarily believe it, but I thought it was interesting.

Good theory, but remember the new phone renders the fonts better so they are sharper and easier to read.

The problem is Apple is the leader with photographers and design. Why have a phone that showcases your work with a washed out screen compared to the 3G phone?

You are right, the color temperature was changed slightly, however, that's not what most people are referring to:

There are some screens which are physically VERY yellow in comparison with other iPhone 3GS units, more than a result of a minor color temperature change in the software.

These "bad" screens render both empty white spaces and color images far less attractively than "good" screens.

It's unfortunate what is a serious issue often gets lost in the "it's meant to be that way" arguments. (I find my 3GS screen so oft-putting I've reverted to using my 3G until I can return the 3GS, and I'm jealous of my girlfriend's 3GS with its perfect screen, that was bought AT THE SAME TIME.)

Please don't confuse things further. Only a company that didn't want the trouble of changing multiple iPhones would claim there was nothing wrong with an overly yellow, duller screen.

Got my phone exchanged at Best Buy today. My screen now looks like the one in your picture. All yellow, but it's uniform now. It's not just at the bottom. That was my final exchange. I have given up after 5 new phones all having varying degrees of problems.

I can say there are 2 issues at hand here..

1 - People have yellow ONLY at the bottom of their screens - hardware issue maybe?

2 - People have "warmer" screens - software/firmware fixable?

Those seem to be the issues. I have had both and my current is a "warmer" screen. I can live with it until either Apple fixes it with a firmware or I start hearing replacements are fine.

I'm starting to think this is all about viewing angles. Viewed straight on the bottom part of my screen is yellow. Tilt the top away a few degrees and the whole screen is uniform white. Tilt the top towards me a few degrees and the whole screen is uniform yellow.

I didn't (and probably never would) notice the yellow bottom until reading a thread in it, and my mates can't see it and think I'm crazy. I can see a similar effect on my MacBook if I look for it. I think I'm gonna try to get over it....

Interesting to read the post from the guy who couldn't see the gradient until he got the replacement home. Suggests it might be a fairly universal thing to me.
