I just got my phone replaced. New phone has deeper colors like previous 3G and isn't washed out. Still has that 'warm' calibration but it doesn't look like urine...just a slight tint.

Overall i'm happy with it

Below is a quick/rough pic i took of my new screen

My 32GB 3GS looks exactly the same as this, there is a yellow tinge at the bottom of the screen. Its really annoying when viewed in landscape. Is there anyone without this yellow patch?

I don't see any difference to the bottom than the top really. Not more than I see it on my 3G (very very very slightly and by now it 'could' mean I'm losing my mind).

I thought the screen looked great until I compared it to my sister's 3G. It is definitely "warmer" or more yellow than hers. I think the ironic thing is I couldn't even tell except by comparison with another unit. It is by no means a strong yellow tint, and when I turn on my flashlight app (makes the entire screen white) I can't tell any difference between top and bottom.

I compared the white to my roomate's Samsung Omnia, same difference. The iPhone is warmer.

Obviously I can't compare my screen to those posted on this thread because my screen isn't very well calibrated, but it doesn't seem as bad as some. It's a 925.

I have a 923 unit, and only notice the warmness when I compare it to my old iPhone that I gave my wife. I did notice that it seems brighter though (with brightness settings maxed and auto control turned off).

Yellow bottom half

I am having the same issue. I compared with my previous 3G, and I noticed that it also has a slight difference in brightness/tint at the bottom.

It doesn't look as yellow on the 3G, so I guess now it is more noticeable because of the warmer calibration of the 3GSs display. I guess it could be resolved with an update.

I don't know what to do. Does anybody successfully changed their 3GS because of this half/yellow tint issue?

Well now I'm kind of pissed. I thought all the 3Gs phones were like this at least a little, but I just stopped by the Apple Store in Fair Oaks Mall here in VA and every 3Gs I compared mine to did not have the yellow screen. Mine is noticably different - it really does look like someone pissed under the screen in comparison. I wanted to exchange on the spot but I had to make a Genius Bar appointment and the earliest they had was tomorrow. I am definitely going in for an exchange.

Have we seen any exchange success yet???

I have had two replacements. The first was really bad, the second is a little better but definitely yellow on the bottom of the screen.

I will not be going in to the genius bar again and will call via phone.

It is ridiculous to spend this much and get a two toned screen.

So I think I came across the solution people!!! I did a restore on the 3gs and that solved the yellow tint problem and the color is back to being up to par to my 3G. I did the restore through itunes. i dont know if this solution will work for everyone but it worked for me and my friend who both have both the 3g and the 3gs. its nice and crisp again. YAYYYYYY.

The 3GS generally seems to have poorer screens than the 3G. Went to the Apple Store and did a comparison and it seems there are 3 types of screens

1.The urine yellow/washed out Screen
2. Diluted urine yellow Screen with varying yellow from top to bottom
3..and what can pass for 'white' even though its more of a blue/green tinged white (best of bunch)

I didn't see one screen that looked as good as the 8GB screens on display

My screen seems to fall into number 2, i'm happy with it...miles better than the screen 1 i initially got but i know it could be better. Its also easier to convince the genius number 1 is defective. With screen number two, it's harder to see the problem unless you make a direct comparison with a 3G/3GS with a very good screen

It also seems rare to get screen number 3 for some reason. I'd like that 3rd screen but i hate geniuses and having to 'convince' them something is wrong. Its like 'You think i love the Apple store so much that i would really come all the way here if there wasn't a problem...einstein?'

I dunno what to do, i called AppleCare to see if they can send me a new phone but the genius only booked me a genius appt. (thanks slick). Maybe i need to call after sales. I really don't want to deal with another specialist.

I have done restores everytime I bring the phones home... Anyway, tint on the bottom but not the top of a screen is hardware. Whether bad lcd or backlight during production, something is not right...

I am going in today in a few hours against my better judgement, but I am going to ask to see a few replacements and compare a few. If they are all the same I will ask them to make a note of it and I will be back in when a new shipment arrives.

I suggest all of you submit feedback and do the same untill it is corrected. It is not right.

Got back from the Genius appt. and suffice it to say my original suspicions were right. The genius had trouble seeing my tinge given that its very faint and almost impossible to see in full brightness. Anyway after a while in the darker back room he saw it and offered a replacement but the replacement phone had an even worse screen and i promptly rejected it and asked for my original phone back

I looked at all the phones on the floor again and only one was superior to mine, everything else was crap...either washed out or waay more brown/yellow than mine. I then realized how good i actually have it and left

The current shipping batch have 90% crap screens. It looks like its the same story as the 3G phones...you have to wait a few months for Apple to 'get it right' but for now. If you're seeking a replacement you're likely to come off worse or equally as bad

The current shipping batch have screens that will look fine to 99% of people, but a minority of the total purchasers (esp. those who come on forums) will want replacements. It looks like its the same story as the 3G phones...we'll have complaints from a few people for a few months for Apple to 'get it right' but for now. If you're seeking a replacement you're likely to come off worse or equally as bad

Fixed that for you. ;)

Not really.

The majority of 3GS buyers i.e. those upgrading from the 2G will definitely notice the switch from cool blue to warm colours (my brother did without me saying anything) and those who had good 3G screens will also notice.

The real point is most will just accept it as norm (we are kind of in agreement here). However, a significant amount have been complaining according to the previous genius i saw (which is why they ran out of replacement screens) and that Apple is paying close attention to feedback notes on each return/replacement...especially in this first week.

Yes, I exchanged mine. I walked into the Apple Store in St. Louis Galleria the day after I got my 3GS and demanded an exchange with a genius. We stared at the screen for 10 minutes, several different geniuses. They refused to see anything wrong with it. Nobody there could see what I was talking about. We even took it into the dark room and they still couldn't see what I was saying (it was as plain as day to me - darker on one side of the screen in landscape mode). I politely explained to them that even though they could not see the problem, I could and it was very annoying to me. I further explained that I expected perfection from a phone that I spent a lot of money on, and if they couldn't see the problem, they should at least humor me and swap it out. They talked to their manager and he agreed to swap. He said he wouldn't swap again though if I didn't like the phone I got next. My new phone is better - but the issue is still there - it's VERY VERY faint now.

haven't you noticed that apples mac displays are the exact same? really warm and yellow'ish compared to PC displays. i still don't see the problem with it at all. surely apple users are use to change

I wasn't being entirely serious. :p However, it's been known for ages that the 2G screen was a cooler colour balance than the 3G and now the 3GS. That doesn't mean either screen is faulty, they're just different. As for the 3G/3GS comparisons, my 3GS is slightly bluer than my wife's (end-2008) 3G, whereas it should be the opposite according to most of the posts on here. As for my 3GS, if I really stare at the screen I can perhaps convince myself that it's slightly warmer at the bottom than the top, but to be honest it's pretty hard to see, I'd never noticed it until I looked for it after reading threads on here and it's only visible at all on a plain white screen, which is not something I stare at a lot.

The real point is most will just accept it as norm. Also a significant amount have been complaining according to the previous genius i saw (which is why they ran out of replacement screens) and he also told me feedback notes are being made on each return/replacement...especially in this first week.

But, based on your own observations of all the screens in the store you looked at, it is the norm. Also, the reality is that the majority of the million-plus 3GS buyers are not returning their phones: the stores would be 10-deep in people if they were and it would be all over the news. The 3GS screens are just different to the 2G ones, like the 3G ones were, and are likely a bit different to the 3G ones as well.

I've no doubt that there are some faulty screens out there (statistically there are bound to be). The screens in the pics posted near the start of this thread look pretty odd, for example: it's hard to judge though, as even though my monitor is calibrated I have no way of knowing what the poster's camera used as its white balance setting.

After comparing all the 3GS's at the St.Johns Apple Store in Jacksonville Florida I noticed that all the white 3GS's had the yellow screens while the black models had nice crisp white screens...the Geniuses agreed the black one was the one to purchase.

Which size are you talking about?

Yellow tint

I just got back from the genius bar. They saw the yellow tint ON ONE SIDE and said it is not acceptable. They ordered a new one overnight. (so I assume I'm not the only one with issues, since they are all out)

The screen is dimmer, warmer, escpecially with auto brightness on then the 3g(but this is normal)

Tint or dimness on one side/bottom, is not normal

I think the contrast is better on the 3GS but the display, especially at this size, should be consistant...

Hopefully this one comes from a new batch...Not all have this problem.

Also got back from genius bar and swapped my phone again. Still has the same problem. I notice the dispay 3gs phones made in the 21st week all looked much better, but unfortunately the genius had 24th week replacements (like the one I had) and low and behold I have the same issue as I did before.

I wish Apple would address this issue sooner than later.
