in light of what has been rumoured with these new M1X or M2 Macs, does anyone who shelled out for an M1 MBP last year feel like they made a mistake? Sure selling is always an option, but its been under a year and way too much would be lost in terms of resell value.

I just got my M1 iMac last week after 2 month waiting for the order to arrive.
But lets see first what they will unleash ...

Im only disappointed by now not being able to have 2 external monitors like I had on my Intel iMac.
So again its sad that Apple doesnt tell that openly, but hides it behind "political correct" marketing bla bla bla

FWIW, Apple mentions that on its website - iMac 24-inch Tech Spec :)

I use an Intel based 16” and am quite happy with it. It does everything well I throw at it. No issues since I bought it. When the M1 incarnation came out, I felt it was more of a marketing ploy of Apple sticking up their noses to Intel. Every year or so there will be advances in integrated circuitry. You can either buy the latest/greatest or be happy with what you have.

I bought one to replace my wife's maxed out 2012 "cMBP". She got every ounce of use out of that thing! And this new (again, "maxed out") M1 MBP will serve her for quite a while.

Now, for myself...I sold a maxed out 16" MBP and bought an M1 Mac mini to tide me over until this second wave of MBPs are released. (haven't decided on the 14" or 16" as of yet...depends on specs, I suppose.)

It’s not as if the 13” M1 is getting replaced. That product will still exist at the current price. The M1X is for people who want to pay at least $1,800 - $2,000 for higher performance and more features.
We don't know that, at all. The 13" M1 MBP significantly overlaps the MBA for a slight premium. It is in no way a device that would meet a need filling that price point once the 14" is released. It should be phased out to complete the differentiation between MBA and MBP.

Do we know if the new MBPs will ALSO be able to be charged via USB-C? (or only via the resurrected magsafe port)

I have a maxed out 2019 i9 MBP- for me the benefit of this new update will be the added ports (not so much the M1x), I think a lot of users may feel the same. I'll be happy to get away from being dependent on a dongle.

I think you are either spot on or maybe even slightly underestimating the MBP costs. I’m basing that on the cost of the M1 iPad Pro 12.9” at $2000 for Mini-LED, 16GB and 1TB storage. I can’t imagine the MBP will cost less than this.

Apple won’t leave an $800 or $1,000 gap in their product stack by discontinuing 13” M1 MBP. There’s also no indication that will happen based on Apple Store shipping dates.

The 13” Pro model has a brighter display and significantly higher contrast compared to the Air. While there is overlap, it fits with the narrative of the Pro offering better performance, features, and display.

Yes, I agree the starting price could be higher. Apple is in a unique position to set the price given the compelling performance/power of the product.

Nope. Bought mine on Amazon Prime Day and traded in my 2020 MBP, which would not run Monterey. $849 after discounts and trade in. Faster, longer battery life, scissor keyboard, Touch Bar, TouchID

How DARE any manufacturer release updated hardware without asking you first! The NERVE!

Indeed. That's why I see the 14" starting well under $1800, price comparison to the iPad pro be damned.

Continuing to produce a 13" pro chassis purely for a stop-gap legacy model that won't be updated again is not an efficient use of resources. Not to mention the only model in the lineup that continues to use the touch bar.

The narrative of M1 Pro vs M1 MBA is pretty universally that the M1 MBP has always been not worth it.

Apple isn’t getting rid of the M1 13” MBP anything soon. This 14” model replaces the $1799 13” MBP. The new 14” will not be any cheaper than the high end 13”. Anyone thinking the new 14” will start at $1299 is going to be seriously disappointed…SERIOUSLY. Starting price will most likely start at $1999 for the 14”. Prepare yourself accordingly.

The de facto 14” business class notebook Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon starts around the $1,800 mark for a 16/512 config. This is similar to Dell Latitude. There’s simply no reason why Apple would be pricing below $1,800.

Our organization doesn’t even offer the Air as a choice. It’s either MacBook Pro or Carbon X1 or T14s. Consumers might pick Air, but the Pro offers benefits for commercial users, especially battery life.

If Apple holds the line at $1799, basically equaling the price and configuration of the current 2020 Intel 13” MacBook Pro, I will be astonished and elated. I seriously think it will start at $1999, but I would be happy to be proven wrong. This happens anytime Apple is set to release new hardware, “Oh, it’s going to have x and x and it will cost $xxx less than the previous model because…” and then it doesn’t happen because people seem to pay no attention to how historically Apple deals with pricing. There is going to be a lot of disappointment and wailing and gnashing of teeth come Monday afternoon. I’m already popping popcorn!

$1499 is my bet. There is no reason to keep the 13" MBP around. The target market is well aware it's a stop-gap, compromise device. Keeping it around dilutes the MBP brand as a whole.

We'll find out next week either way.

The majority of MBPs are still sold to consumers, not businesses. Businesses pay inflated prices for "business class" PC laptops all the time, so Lenovo and Dell can continue to charge what they charge and AP departments will cut the checks.

Apple still needs to have an accessibly priced, current-gen MBP in the lineup. I'm still saying $1499, and I'm prepared to be hurt as well. I will be absolutely shocked if the 13" MBP stays on as a zombie device; it's presence in the lineup will diminish the Pro brand once the M1X is released.

Prepare to lose that bet. The 14” replaces the $1799/$1999 Intel 13” MacBook Pro. Prices won’t drop. The 13” isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Went from MBP 16" to Base MB Air M1. Very happy with portability and not listening to the fan spin all day. Uncertain if I want to add a 14/16.

I learned a long time ago to be happy with the new computer that you buy and not chasing every new computer release. It's just like buying a new car and by that I mean as soon as you drive it out of the dealership there something better waiting in the wings. The only reason I bought a MBP 13 M1 was that my iMac Pro is out of warranty and I had a major repair done to it when the warranty was still in effect. The computer is still working, but it is acting flaky and I don't want to chance a chance on it going kaput. I also like the fact that I can take the MBP with me if I do a major photo shoot.

I have an M1 Air and I love it over the 2020 i5 Quad Core Air

but that was a different class of proc than the Pros. The thermals battery life and performance are other worldly next to that. And my base 2.0ghz i5 2016 Pro which preceded that machine.

Personally I think the Pro was a waste to get last year vs an Air, which was for most purposes the same thing in practice just thinner and a lot cheaper. And no Touch Bar which I always prefer.

As mentioned though, these new Pros will certainly be in a different price tier like upper 1k - lower 2k than the M1 Pro's that are out now, so if you weren't wanting to pony up for that you got nothing to regret. And you do have a slightly brighter display and better battery than the Air. Still I prefer the slimming form factor and slimmer price.
