I traded my 2019 15 base MBP for the M1 MBA spec below and am VERY happy, the M1 is similar if not better in performance, battery life is outstanding and best of all, no fans!
Looking forward to what Apple is planning to offer next, and when my iMac will be ready to be replaced in a year or two, will decide between a mini and the new larger iMac ...

Nope, I knew from day one that the MacBook Air was just to tie me over until the 16 inch pro was released. I am actually surprised at how well the 8 GB air handled my workflow. I went with the lowest specs to minimize the value loss.
Although I will be glad to stop trying to micromanage all my open apps.

To ANYONE who recently bought the m1 MBP 13", and is now suffering buyer's remorse, my answer would be:

"You were properly warned several months ago that a new m1x MacBook Pro would be arriving around Sep/Oct. You chose to NOT wait. But having been duly warned...."

The exception:
Those who had "a failure" and who had to buy a replacement immediately.
"If you need now, BUY now"...

base M1 mbp on sale is fine but if you paid full price for like a spec'd out one then...yea

I have a maxed out 2019 i9 MBP- for me the benefit of this new update will be the added ports (not so much the M1x), I think a lot of users may feel the same. I'll be happy to get away from being dependent on a dongle.
I had a 16", i9 (maxed out, basically) MBP that I sold a while back. Sounded like a helicopter taking off when doing anything intensive. Bought my wife a maxed out M1 13" MBP. When I do the same things, I don't even hear the fans at all. I bought myself an M1 Mac mini to tide me over...but once the new Apple silicon-based 16" MBPs come out, I am BUYING!

Went from MBP 16" to Base MB Air M1. Very happy with portability and not listening to the fan spin all day. Uncertain if I want to add a 14/16.
The Apple silicon systems are AMAZING. LOVE the battery live and performance.

I replaced my wife's 2012 (maxed out) "cMBP" with a maxed out 13" M1 MBP. She absolutely LOVES IT! And, will likely use it until it dies...

Not at all. M1 is a beast and for the work I do M1 is more than enough. M1X is for professional work and gpu intensive work. M1 is capable will still be in the lineup. When M2 comes out I will still recommend M1 models to friends and family if its on sale/discounts.

Edit: Only thing I would wish for is thinner bezels and even better speakers.

Agreed. The 13" M1 MBP is AMAZING! Ridiculous battery life and impressive performance...

Apple isn’t getting rid of the M1 13” MBP anything soon. This 14” model replaces the $1799 13” MBP. The new 14” will not be any cheaper than the high end 13”. Anyone thinking the new 14” will start at $1299 is going to be seriously disappointed…SERIOUSLY. Starting price will most likely start at $1999 for the 14”. Prepare yourself accordingly.
Going to have to disagree.

Prepare to lose that bet. The 14” replaces the $1799/$1999 Intel 13” MacBook Pro. Prices won’t drop. The 13” isn’t going anywhere for a while.
Not having intel will most definitely lower the price, same as it did with the M1 MBA. I am thinking 1599$ For the 14 16/512. Possibly 1699$ but that’s pushing it. Remember that the iPhone 13 with added pro motion is still 999$ .

I’d rather expect a price increase so i wont be disappointed lol.

remember iphone 13 is a S model and reused the chassis of the 12. Too many new features imo to even maintain the price for these new macbook pros

We don't know that, at all. The 13" M1 MBP significantly overlaps the MBA for a slight premium. It is in no way a device that would meet a need filling that price point once the 14" is released. It should be phased out to complete the differentiation between MBA and MBP.
I mean… the iPhone 13 Pro significantly overlaps the iPhone 13 for a slight premium. That’s kind of the whole name of Apple’s game.

M1 MBA didn't receive a price drop. iPhone margins are far higher than Mac. $999 MBA buys you 256GB storage while you get 128GB on iPhone.

These dreams about 14" being under $1,800 are just silly. Compare it with other business class notebooks like Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude.

People don't offer any logical reason when they suggest 14" MBP will start under $1,800. Not a single feature in the new MacBook Pro is cheap or falls short compared to the competition.

I don't think you can be disappointed with a device that was launched nearly a year ago. Having said that, the M1 Air was the only sensible choice. Paying extra for the M1 Pro for extremely small gains was not a sensible purchasing decision anyway.

I bought the M1 MacBook Pro with the 16 GB Ram upgrade. Used it for work for almost one year. I don't regret it at all. It paid for itself many times over.

Right, but that's not the point of my statement. The 13 and 13 Pro were both released at the same time and are both updated devices with the same chip.

The MBP analogy (regarding keeping the current 13 MBP M1 after next week) would be if Apple sold the iPhone 12 Pro alongside the iPhone 13 Pro. Apple doesn't really do that. Pro models are sold alone lately.

But the 13" MacBook Pro has been sold in two distinct tiers (a 2-port version and 4-port version with more capability and power) for the last few years now. Apple only replaced the lower of those tiers with Apple Silicon last year, and now they're going replace the higher tier. There's no possible way Apple would put mini-LED / ProMotion / 512GB SSD / 16GB RAM / M1X at the $1299 pricepoint. The 512GB iPad Pro is already $1399.

It is possible that next year, when the MBA gets its rumored significant overhaul, the MBA creeps up a little in price and they discontinue the 2-port MBP due to its redundancy. Right now, though? There's nothing else at $1299 and they're not going to leave a gap between the $999 Air and the $1799 (?) M1X MacBook Pro.

The M1 MBP 16/512 is $1699. You think they're going to double the CPU cores, double the GPU cores, increase the screen size, redesign the chassis completely, add a mini-LED panel, add 120Hz, add HDMI / MagSafe / SD card slot and charge $100 less for it? That's... very optimistic.

i mean honestly unless your an actual "pro" the M1 is more than enough. I typically have 10-20 tabs of safari open, Spotify, MS word docs, SideCar running and whatever programming app im currently learning and never have a stutter. The new macbooks will be amazing, but i honestly wouldnt utilize its power, similar to how iphone processors keep getting better but nothing takes advantage of it.

That's cause the phone gets better but the OS is from the early 2000's. The biggest bottleneck is iOS, not the devices

Dude, that's progress. There is nothing magically expensive about 16/512 at all.

They are doing the chipset in-house, of course they can do this. That was the entire point: to blow away what Intel can provide.

Bought my M1 a year ago at launch , so I know your comment doesn't apply to to me. However when you need a computer you need a computer. If someone bought as recently as a month ago I'm going to trust they had a need. Its not as if these M1s become useless - they perform extremely well. As for the other extras... well I still don't get the lusting after HDMI ports and SD card slots..

It's idealistic is what it is. They already made the transition to in-house chipsets with the $1299 MBP. Now it's time to take what they've learned and apply it to the $1799 MBP. They won't magically be able to decrease the price while adding all those features eleven months later. All the additional features I listed are in comparison to the 13" M1 MBP, not the outgoing Intel model. They already blow Intel away in the $1000-$1500 segment, now it's time to take the $1500-$3000 segment.
