How tough do you want? I am very pleased with the Zugu, the ESR is a good one. Don’t bother with the Otterbox. The toughest system is the Pivot Case this is the case used by commercial pilots.

The Zugu is tough enough. it's just that it starts to separate.

I get your point. My iPad does not move around much and a rarely take out of the house my iPhone handles that. Here is a military spec iPad case.

I ended up going with a Mophie Folio case from Apple, it should arrive today. Hopefully it'll be good.
With the Zugu, I think it's a design flaw on the front cover that causes the separation: it's the tab you always need to use to open it, so it gets worn out faster. That area needs to be more reinforced and then it would be fine.
You'd have to be heavy handed for that to happen, it has a a piece that sticks out you use to open it.
Not a fan of the flap on the mophie.

That flap is exactly where it starts to separate. That hit me in year 4 of the case. The way it's made, your thumb brushes against the seam on the flap and over time it gets worn out. Then it just spreads.
I didn't think I'd like the flap either and it was one of the reasons I hesitated. But so far I don't mind it and I like that it sticks the front cover to the back of the iPad while in use.
Amazon refunded me told me to keep it, rubber very flimsy on sides/top.
Worst thing is the weight, back to the Apple folio.
I can't seem to use anything else.

I have tried about a dozen 3rd party cases and they are either flimsy, too bulky or have stuff I don't want like flaps or slots for a pencil. I always go back to the folio. It's vastly overpriced for what it is, but it is the best option for my uses.
I just bought the pitaka ( I think that’s how you spell it). it was on sale for $40 on amazon. It can go into some good positions but feels cheapish compared to apple’s version. I may return it but do i really want to put out another $60 for Apple’s?
This was repeatedly one of the reasons why I took a Zugu Case again. Furthermore, I think that a 4 year old case, which is really used, can also be replaced, it is a consumer object.
Zugu is and remains for me the most beautiful case for on the go, if the iPad is to be used as an "ipad". Otherwise, only the Magic Keyboard is possible. If you want it minimalist, use it naked 😉😁

That looks like you have been overly rough with your device. I have never ever had a ZUGU case look like that it all the years I have used them.

I suppose, though I was expecting it to last longer consider how much the Zugu case costs. Again, the issue I have with the case is that the tab isn't reinforced - which is probably an easy enough fix to fortify the tab that gets more use than the rest of the case.

Nah, I baby my devices, never drop 'em and they're always transported in padded sleeves in addition to the case. This is the only case I have that looks so ratty. Heck, even my four year old glasses look brand new.
It just looks like that from opening and closing it, which is a shame.

Just opening the flap to use it. The tab that you lift starts to separate over time and once that happens, the separation accelerates.
