Mostly, to date, this seems to be an impossible dream.

Hoping there is a workaround.

My 16" MBP works fine with my Samsung 46" UltraWide monitor at 5120x1440.

I do have ScreenResX installed.

This is my connection:

MBP -> 4k 60Hz TB3 cable (40Gbps) -> Caldigit Dock -> Display Port Cable -> Samsung Monitor

With that connection is there any suitable resolution I may be able to obtain with a Mac Mini M1 connected the same way?

Already have been participating in that thread.

There is no clear answer.

Generally, it is being said that resolution is not natively supported. However, there are also those saying that using Switch ResX would push the Mini to conform to the display.

So, basically, it looks like it could be done with workarounds but not enough people with Minis and Widescreen displays to give an accurate answer.

That is why I started this thread to bring more owners here to report their experiences.

Hey NJRonbo,
on Reddit theres also a thread about M1 and handle a widescreen resolution with 5120x1440. (don´t know, if i can post the link here). I´m with you, and in the same position. My MBP still on the road and will be arrive by next week. I don´t have an ultrawide screen so far, but i will order one, because i need more than one (small) screen for productivity (isn´t it weird? They call it PRO with only handle one screen... pah).
It should be work fine without ScreenResX - that´s what i read a few times... but yeah, i´m still confused, and that would be a no scenario for me, and i will return the MBP, if this not works great.

Swen :)

Swen,

I have seen the Reddit thread.

My Mini won't arrive until around December 23rd (though I suspect that will move up substantially)

Please come back to this thread and let me know if you get it working on your monitor.

Good Luck!

It looks like the limitation is with two displays.

A single 46" Ultrawidescreen display should still be supported.

That is, if I am reading this correctly.
True, this is just to show you that they have indeed been testing the M1 Macs... they might be able to provide some insight into your issue as well.

Ok, good! Hope i can tell you more next week. I ordered my CRG9 just right now. So, i´ll see it next week.
Will let you know...
Cheers :)

My mini is also arriving on the 23rd, and I really hope you're right about an earlier arrival. I just ordered an 29" LG UWM from Amazon last night as it was discounted on a special deal. Hoping all this gets resolved by the time we get our minis!

A lot of earlier dates were moved up, so yes, I expect we will get our Minis earlier than promised.

No promises as I don't know the supply constraints, but I am being rather optimistic.

My date has already been bumped up from the 23rd to the 16th of December. I expect that trend to continue.

It doesn’t work. I have a Samsung 49” ultra wide and cannot use my MacBook Pro m1 with this. It sometimes works but at 1080 max but then causes the MacBook Pro to freeze. It’s the weirdest issue.

Damn!

What kind of connection are you using?

I have a thunderbolt 3 (high-speed cable) connection to a dock and then from the dock, a display port cable goes to the monitor.

Of course, that's with a 16" MBP. My Mini won't be here for two more weeks so I am watching this thread carefully.

I am using a display port 1.4 It's crazy how the MacBook pro freezes then as soon as I unplug it, it unfreezes. If the display does recognize it, it will only output at 1080 max. Nothing more which is crazy blurry. I have tried 3 different display port cables so its not the cable. :-( Its definitely the Mac lol

Sorry to hear that Jeff.

The only other thing I am hearing people are ordering is the Moshi TB3 -> Display Port cable which makes sense might work, but I haven't seen the results from that experiment yet.

For the info...I have the LG Ultrawide 49inch, and this doesn't work with my new MBA M1 :-(

It didn't either with my MBP 13in 2017 with Intel Iris until this morning when I updated to Big Sur.

Can this help us decipher where the problem lies?

If it's working now then Big Sur made it possible.

If you are on Big Sur and still can't get your 49-inch to display in 5120x1440 then it could be the cables. I keep saying that the faster TB3 -> Display Port cables could fix the issue. The other is holding down the options key when you are in Display settings on the Mac to see extra available resolutions. Some say they can do it with SwitchResX installed (or similar software).

I read some people are getting their 49" UW monitors to work and I read others cannot.

Yep as Jeff, does not work with 2 cables I got from Amazon too. One said 8k but no go.

not spending £50 for the moshi cable

I used this one
