Just a smart cover, I hate using cases for my iDevices they make them bulky and ugly. Naked all the way baby.

Very tempted. Very, very tempted. But alas, I just can't do it. This thing is quite a bit more difficult to hold than, say, an iPhone and it just feels like it'd be easier to drop. I've got a Smart Cover for the front and a Caudabe Shell for the back. Same thing I had on previous iPads and it's worked out well.

I do wish I could go case-free, but something in me just won't let me do it.

I'm interested in purchasing the Caudabe Shell for my iPad Mini Retina and would appreciate some feedback about this product (i.e., quality, lightweight, durableness, etc) Thanks!

I own a black Smart Cover, a red Smart Case, and pink Tech21 Mesh Case. I am currently using the Tech21 Mesh case with the Smart Cover seems to work well. I tend to switch my cases all the time a bit a.d.d. with them. Might use the Smart Case again when I get board of the set up I have now.

I kinda understand a case on an iPhone (kinda), but non-functional cases on an iPad are somewhat mystifying to me.

I mean, part of the reason iPads cost as much as they do is because so much effort has been made to make it small, light, easy to hold, resistant to breakage, and yes - beautiful. Why then, spend more money to make it bigger, heavier, and uglier? If the iPad was that big, heavy, and ugly to begin with, no one would buy it for that price.

To me that's like if someone created this great new car that was lighter, easier to drive, scratch/dent resistant, and just felt and looked fantastic and you excitedly bought it and then immediately encased the entire thing s#!+ty heavy protective plastic. I guess you're kinda protecting its resale value? But when we see you driving it around, we kinda chuckle at you.

Why? Does the presence of a case suddenly stop the iPad from working? There are good reasons for putting the iPad inside a case - e.g. when letting little kids use it, using it in construction areas, etc.

Chuckle away. Almost every iPad I see in the "wild" has a case. If you get the right case, it is no big deal. I have a lightweight snap on case that is super thin and protects from scratches and perhaps slight dents. I also have a soft sleeve to slip it into. Both are simple and plain black - nothing gaudy. I also have a screen protector on - static cling and feels and looks exactly like I have nothing on the glass.

I know from experience that scratches on the glass can come almost from nowhere - particularly faint ones- as I had a first gen iPad that was naked that I only used in bed with nothing sharp. One day there was a scratch on the glass, or at least in the finger-print resistant coating, that was visible during use.

I also had an iPad 2 -- one day I was walking with it at home in my hallway and it just barely hit the corner of a wall and the small dent it left happened to be just above the volume button. Anything can happen, sure. I know if I dropped my iPad on tile with the clip on case I have now it would probably shatter and dent. But anyone with without an Otterbox is taking some level of risk. Still, don't laugh at people who want to take simple precautions. It's not as if everyone who buys a case has some huge monstrosity that makes the iPad heavy and hideous.

By the way, Apple makes cases for both iPad and iPhone . . . not sure you know.

Simple answer: to protect it.
And since the product is so thin and light, the added bulk doesn't make it ugly.

If it was bulkier I would put on a case anyway, and the result would be worse (my previous iPad 4 with the smart case wasn't so light and thin).

A car has nothing to do with a portable device like a tablet ....

I use the SmartCover since it doubles as a stand, but otherwise I don't really use a case.

In my bag I use a sleeve for padding. I like to throw my bag, and I've broken a couple computers before doing this, but I've learned my lesson (still throw the bag, just added an inner sleeve). :p

if i left it at home it was caseless but since i got the ipad air i invested in a case just for safety sake. you can be careful all you want but accidents are bound to happen.

I couldn't do it. And really, with how light the Air is, what's one more smart cover and a lightweight back shell? I have a smart cover and a frost Caudabe Shell. It doesn't ruin the feel of the iPad the same way, say, a thick Otterbox might on an iPhone.

I put a decent ZAGG HD screen protector on the iPad and I use a cheap $7 Amazon TPU back cover to protect the back and edges. It's super thin and tight and is as close to "caseless" as I am willing to go.
