im not eligible for an upgrade till april of 2012, so i was thinking about buying and iphone 4 at retail price. i know its ridiculous and a waste of money but at the same time i just want my iphone back. i had a 3g for about a year till i was forced to leave at&t, so needless to say my droid x just doesnt have that iOS feel that i miss so much.

I'm hoping my upgrade discounts that I have available will take a huge chunk of the two year upgrade price of the phone. If it was a phone that could be used on multiple networks/dual modes id consider picking it up at full retail ..but think just upgrading at this point wouldnt be a bad idea.

i totally agree that pre-ordering is not a good idea but im still tempted. im trying to talk my self out of it but i know ill whip out my debit card come Feb. 3rd

I'll definitely be picking one up. I'll just have to time the sale of my Droid X so that I've got as little downtime as possible.

wouldn't it be cheaper to pay the ETF, assuming you're on a dumb phone contract of $175? tell verizon you'd like to be on a month to month contract.

then purchase the iphone for $199/$299.

is this frowned upon?

i just read that the 16 GB verizon iphone will cost $649.99 if you are not eligible for an upgrade. i am outraged right now; that is an absurd price, even for an iphone. it would be cheaper to pay my ETF of $350 or whatever it is and go to AT&T. im so mad im seriously considering it

Paying the ETF cancels your service. You will lose your number.

I don't think he is on a dumbphone contract as his previous phone was a droid x.

When did you purchase your smartphone? The $350 Early Termination Fee only applies to smartphones purchased after November of 2010. If you bought it before then, you pay less than $175 -- it is $175 for the base cancellation, then either $5 (or $10) less for every month you've had it. It would only cost me $130 or so to cancel my Blackberry and Verizon line and switch over to AT&T. (Also, AT&T will NOT pay for your EFT, as for that is illegal.)

So, in all, you can purchase the iPhone on a new line ($200) and then cancel your own old line (~$150). It'll come out to be $350 which is considerably cheaper than having to pay full retail OR switch from carrier to carrier (not to mention that you will have to pay for activation and all that other crap on AT&T).

There is another line on my plan that is eligible for an upgrade, so I will be going with that. I don't think I'll have the option to pre-order (because of that), but I can always just go to the store. Thinking of the 16GB now, so then I can upgrade to the iPhone 5 come June.

Why are you so mad? iPhones are expensive. The price for an out of contract iPhone is about €650 in Europe, so that's even more expensive than the $650 you'll have to pay.

Where did you read that? It's false information.

i am well aware that they are expensive devices but when my gf was with at&t last year and wanted to early upgrade to an iphone 4 she only had to pay $400, which i know is not cheap by any means but its way more reasonable. thats the only reason im complaining like a child lol

I think if you cancel verizon and pay the ETF then you cannot sign right back up with verizon. You would have to go to AT&T.

Sell your Droid X after the fact. Bet you'll get at least $250 for it, as it will be off contract.

At the end of the day, is $600 really that much? You'll pay many multiples of that over the 2 years of lock-in.

I think Apple is a better source than USA Today ;)

if thats before taxes it would end up being $647, which isnt that much better

the more i think about it and calm down, you're right. i do like verizon i was just hoping they would give its customers a lil break, even if it was $400 like at&t did. after i sell my droid x it will knock it down to about $400 so i guess in the long run it wont make much of a difference
