I got an original droid with my upgrade awhile back couldn't hold out for the iPhone. Guess it was just over a year ago-ish. Not due an upgrade until October. I WILL be paying retail but, I'm going to get the 16GB version. Been waiting for it for YEARS like most of us and AT&T was not an option. I was an AT&T customer until I moved to L.A. and had nothing but dropped calls.
Here's my rationale for paying retail and my plan to recoup some of that money.
1. Despite the Droid being a decent phone, I bought it simply because Verizon did not have the iPhone and I needed something better than the Blackberry I had. Built in GPS is great and the Droid was the same price as buying a standalone GPS unit which I needed and did not have - so I kiled 2 birds with one stone. In other words- it was a decent substitute for what i really wanted - an iPhone.
2. Despite what everyone (AT&T lovers) may claim, I've NEVER had an issue EVER selling my old Verizon phone after I upgraded. There's plenty of people who don't want a contract, are upgrade ineligible, have lost a phone and didn't have insurance that need a phone and don't want to pay full price. I imagine I can sell my Droid, charging dock and car kit for around $150. So there's $150 right there.
3. Let's say that they release a NEW iPhone for Verizon this summer-ish. In October I'll be due my upgrade. I'll take the upgrade and sell my existing Verizon iPhone for a few hundred $$$. A short term investment and when it's all said and done I've recouped a good chunk of money.
4. Let's say they DON'T release a new iPhone this summer. I'll either upgrade to a 32GB and sell my 16GB or I'll hold onto the credit for when they do and sell at that time.
