I'm just curious. So if you people get the iphone on verizon and then the new Iphone comes out this year won't you guys not be able to get the discount on the new iphone and then you have to pay full price for it? Why not wait for the new one that's coming out this year?

I pondered the thought of adding a line as well and swapping the iPhone to my number. Problem is, if you have an unlimited talk plan like we do then the cost of the line is $49.99 + the $30 data plan (assuming they do not raise the data charge for the iPhone). So I would end up paying way more having to keep the new line open.

On the other hand, if you did not have unlimited talk and you added a line for $9.99 then you would have to add the $30 data plan as well. Assuming you already have a $30 data plan on your main line, then you would have to pay another $40 plus taxes for the add on line just to get the iPhone. So figure you get an Iphone for $200-$300 for the new line and switch it over to your existing line, you're STILL paying $40+ for the extra line. at 24 months + the discounted cost for the phone, you end up paying $1200 - $1300 for the phone!

The only way around it is if you have a line already WITHOUT a smart phone. Then you can get a $9.99 line and the $30 data plan on that line, then swap that plan and the phone over to your existing number and swap the dumb phone to the new line. then you're only paying $9.99 for 24 months. So $240 to maintain the line plus whatever for the phone you're looking at around $440 to $540 for the iPhone in the long run. so you'd save between $200-$300 jumping through that hoop. Jesus this is all so confusing.

I've crunched the numbers every way I can think of...

And yes, I expect a sincere response from Verizon telling me exactly what my ETF will be and no discount! But, if you don't ask, you don't get. So what's the problem with trying? If enough people bitch then maybe they'll offer up something. Doubtful but, a btter chance than doing nothing.

Most of us are eligible in about 5-10 months if and when a new phone comes out. My plan would be to then use my upgrade and sell the "current" Verizon iPhone. Plus sell my Droid, in the end I personally would be out very little.

i would say that odds are verizon wont see a new iphone till next feb or so. at&t on the other hand will prob get an iphone 4g, or so ive read. dont quote me on that i just read to many tech blogs and forums. oh and i dont have an upgrade till April of 2012 so id be screwed either way if a new iphone came out for verizon this summer. if it does ill just sell my current iphone and do this all over again lol

To the original poster:

I was with AT&T and the iPhone for a couple of years before switching to Verizon and the Droid X when it launched last year. I was fed up with AT&T and just wanted a change. I liked the Droid X for a while... it was nice having more customization options, etc. However, I have grown increasingly frustrated with it due to glitches, reboots, and times when things just don't work right.

So YES, I will be buying the iPhone 4 on Verizon on February 3rd at full retail price. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that much money. An iPod Touch is half the price already and doesn't have all of the features of the iPhone. So even if we end up upgrading again, the iPhone 4 will still be valuable for years to come for use on WIFI and as a Touch device.

I was hesitant at first because I know there will be a new iPhone 5 in July, but I will be able to buy that one at upgrade price (I'm eligible in May for an upgrade). Of course, there's still a big IF because we don't know for sure Verizon will even get the new iPhone right away. And this will most likely be a minor update anyway this year. If it's not that much different, I may stick with the iPhone 4 and wait to use my upgrade pricing for the iPhone 6 in 2012 which will most likely have LTE. And LTE will be very pervasive by the time as well!

PS - On the other hand, if I were in an area that would be getting LTE right away, I might consider switching to one of those newly announced LTE Android phones. However, my area will most likely not get LTE until 2012 at the earliest and I rarely travel to areas that would have it.

i know exactly what you means about the droid x and android platform being buggy. i kept trying to tell myself that it was as good if not better than an iphone and iOS but i could see through my own lies lol. i happen to live in a city with LTE coverage but i still only want my iphone. im going to buy it at retail in a few weeks then hopefully use my upgrade next spring, after the new iphone comes to verizon (if it actualy comes next winter like id expect)

its been over 24 hours and still no response. the only other time i email verizon they responded in less than 24 hours. im thinking they got bombarded with emails from other pissed off customers

Me neither and I bet you are right. I bet they are getting smothered. Might be getting smothered nby AT&T defectors too. I know a TON of people here in L.A. and in NYC ready to jump ship.

In reality we really can't bitch can we? I'm just sick and tired of new customers getting all the deals when loyal customers don't. DIRECTV is really good about that, they give HD for life to new customers, you call and ask for it, they give it to you.

Like I said, I'm just trying to see IF they'll give me a break. Even if it's $100 discount, it's something right?

lol at this point i think $25 off would be a win for us!

Everything, and everyone has a price

I had Verizon as my carrier for years, waiting ever so patiently for the iPhone. Wanting something to tide me over, I got a Droid and was pretty happy with it. Then I saw the iPhone 4 keynote speech and that was all it took. I wasn't waiting any longer. I pre-ordered the iPhone 4 on day 1 and happily paid my smartphone termination fee with Verizon. Not only that ,but I canceled my wifes Verizon dumbphone, payed that termination fee, and got her an iPhone 4 as well. It wasn't the smartest money I ever spent but we both enjoy our iPhones and have no problems with AT&T service in my area. Even knowing that Verizon now has the iPhone, I would not have done anything differently.

Verizon just called me. I wasn't near my phone but, they left me a meesage. They are extremely sorry but, there is no way they can nor will give a discount. Oh well, figured as much.

i actually just got a call as well. i answered and the lady told me the same BS. she told me about some trade in program to get money for my droid x, prob like 25 bucks. oh well, we tried

She sent me an email too just a while ago. I replied to it and told her it would be nice if they would even just offer us loyal customers a $50 or $100 coupon, bill credit or gift card. Doubt it'll happen but, I'm still trying :).

You know if you're in NY, 6ave electronics has a pretty good trade in for cash program. I just ordered a new Denon AVR and was checking it out online, they offered me like $120 for my Droid 1. Not bad. Maybe not as good as craigslist but, not bad.

I went ahead and checked for you, they'll give $192 for your Droid X!

And yeah, I checked out Verizon's trade in. $50 for the Droid and $96 for the Droid X! HA!

and Verizon only gives you a gift card for verizon, 6ave gives you cash...

I wonder if 6th ave does it at the store, I have one right by me

wow $192 is better than i thought but youre right, ill get at least 250-300 on craigslist or ebay. are you going to sell your droid on 6ave?

so i was thinking last night, about the new iphone and all our emailing to them. i suddenly became very scared that they wont let us pre-order because we emailed them to bitch them out, even though we did it in a very nice manner. what if they are like, " oh these guys think they are tough huh? lets see if they think they are tough when we dont send them info on preordering."

i know that seems ridiculous BUUUUT i did threaten to leave verizon lol

i just read that the 16 GB verizon iphone will cost $649.99 if you are not eligible for an upgrade. i am outraged right now; that is an absurd price, even for an iphone. it would be cheaper to pay my ETF of $350 or whatever it is and go to AT&T. im so mad im seriously considering it

One more reason everyone thinks Verizon is going to be so good, just wait until they have you hooked and I can see all the issues with the iPhone. Right now Verizon supports their own phones and issues, but I can not wait until someone needs an exchange they will be seriously getting angry at the way this will be handled. If Verizon handles the iPhone issues anything like they handled my sons 2 day old Motorola Droid issues. I can't wait to hear what complaints people will have on Verizon, I am sure there will be many.

I'll see if I can sell it on cragislist first and see what happens. I usually sell everything I list on there within 24 hours including old phones. I JUST sold my 32GB WiFi iPad on craigslist yesterday- we had 2 of them and I just didn't see the point of having 2 when I'm getting the iPhone. So now we still have 1 32GB. I'm set for funds on the iPhone and with a new iPad coming maybe I'll get one of them. So if all else fails I'll sell to 6ave. Better than nothing.

Well we've been with Verizon for 10 years now and have had absolutely NO issues EVER. And I have a Droid and have had NO issues that were not some kind of buggy, phone glitch due to the phone's software not Verizon's service.

My only gripe is that they are relentless with early upgrades.

If you think AT&T is great...then great. This isn't really a pissing contest over phone carriers though. Not sure why anyone would really go out of their way to bash another carrier since they all suck whe you come down to it. Unless, they thought their carrier choice is some type of "social statement", which is sad. I can't believe the resentment over this, its insane really. When did people stop doing tangible things to make a statement and start relying on portable devices and corporate entities to do that for them?

If my girlfriend has a new every 2 coming but she doesn't have the data package, can she upgrade to the iphone and then like a month later go back to her "dumbphone" plan and give me the iphone?

If you're both on the same account she can order the iPhone and you can switch it over to your line the day it arrives. If you're not on the same account, then she can do that but, she'll probably pay an ETF fee.

i called verizon to confirm i can do this twice. my mom has her annual upgrade on her 2 year contract because she is 16 months or so in. i am going to use her upgrade adn just pay the extra $20 fee for the annual upgrade and then use the iphone on my different account since i am not eligible for an upgrade. 3 reps have told me that once she buys the phone she can gift it to whoever she wants and do whatever she wants with it. and they confirmed multiple times that she can in fact use the annual upgrade as long as i pay the $20 fee. they wouldnt move her contract and NE2 date up 6 months tho which kinda pissed me off.

see my reply about this situation. once she gets the phone and accepts the 2 year contract she can do whatever she wants with it. but she will have that contract for 2 years so im guessing she has to keep the data plan or pay the data plan etf

in my case my mom is taking my blackberry so she needs the data plan anyway so she will not care about the 2 year agreement

So I have a Droid X with a data plan. I was going to add a line for $9.99 and get the iPhone and switch it to my main # and activate my old RAZR on the second line. Will they force me to keep 2 data plans? Will they let me drop the data from my existing line as long as I keep the phone # active?
