Craigslist Scam

Didn't feel like starting a new thread, but what do you guys think about craigslist deals? Like I see a whole bunch of people who claim to have unopened boxes of Ipod Touches, and they all say they need money. My question is why don't they just return it, since it's brand new?

But what do you guys think? Are these kinds of deals legit, like not just this one, but these kinds of still sealed brand new ipods, when they could just return it.

That guy looks to be for real. I think they sell them on CL because of the restocking fee that Apple charges.

That is utterly unbelieveable. How can you be expected to know that the card is stolen?? The whole idea of PayPal is that card details are not disclosed. That is in no way your fault and glad to hear you didn't lose out.

But why were you not covered by seller's protection?

You have to ship the item to the verified address of the PayPal account. If you ship to a different address, or if the address hasn't been verified, then there is no coverage.

So how does this work - a situation I've had before.

The person wins, pays by PP but the address they give is marked as unconfirmed. Do you just refuse to send it to them?

If you say they have to pay some other way, you need to refund the PP payment which will already have had a percentage deducted so you, as the innocent seller, are already out of pocket.

I agree with joefinnan - it should be PayPal's responsibility. When PP tell you the buyer has paid and to send it to a certain address, then that should be PayPal saying 'Send to this address and you'll be safe and we guarantee that you'll keep the money'. Not 'You might end up sending off your goods and then we might find out the credit card is stolen and take all the money back off you. Tough luck.'

If it is really a guy or girl in the UK i would expect proper grammer. This looks like it was typed by a Nigerian.

As a recently retired teacher I can assure you bad grammar is not unheard of in the UK, it's not just limited to Nigeria .... :(

Yep, that's one of the things you have to do to minimize your risk......you should of course say in your ad that you'll only ship to confirmed addresses

I got a response from someone in eBay:

Dear redtomato,

Hi thanxs for the warning ,but i had a bad feel about this seller so iv'e not paid and will not

I also got another 4 emails warning me ,one from some one already been bled.

if you know what what steps to take now please advise

(copied from response to RedTomato) I did ask seller before auction ended if he accepted credit cards, his answer after i won was he did but the machine was down

"Machine was down" I would've said "OK - just let me know when it's running again and we'll finish this thing up" after I asked "Machine? What, are you an individual seller or a storefront outlet?" The ease with which one can poke in the "seller's" logic is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Good to see that this buyer didn't pay.

IDK but I think there is a way to refund the payment as opposed to accepting it and then Sending Money back.

<checks>

Yeah, there it is on the bottom of the Details page

"Refund:
You can issue a refund for up to 60 days after the original payment was sent. PayPal refunds the payment and fees, including partial fees for partial refunds."

Father Jack,

Are you a real Catholic priest? I think the MacRumors forums could use the services of a chaplain every now and again. :)

Fortunately / unfortunately I'm not a priest. I think I can safely say I definitely wouldn't qualify. lol

Father Jack (Hackett) is a priest in a U.K. TV comedy series called Father Ted.

FJ is well known for shouting "Drink" and "Girls" as well as obscenities like "ar*e" and "Feck" (which is the Irish equivalent of F*** .... I'm sure you get the idea)

Father Jack is permanently drunk, come to think about it, I probably would qualify, so I'll offer my services as chaplain for Mac Rumors .... :):)

Some of the deals are definitely legit. I bought my ipod touch off of a guy from Craigslist. He works for a company and for Christmas he got a voucher from apple from his work. So he already had an ipod and he sold his to me. It was a deal on my part, I paid 400 when it would come close to 600 (with shipping and taxes). He just wanted the extra cash. But I would becareful anyway, I bought someone along with me but the guy was really nice and gave me the receipts and everything, had me open the box infront of him. So, check out the box when/if you get the ipod make sure the seal looks good, and that the ipod isn’t scratched and all that.

OK People, listen up...

I've just been on the receiving end of a real bolt out of the blue - just getting my head around it.

Today I got a letter from Kent Police! It said that my details had come up on Interpol's computers with regards to a fraud investigation being carried out concerning eBay auctions. Bearing in mind that I was fleeced a good few months ago, it's come as very welcome news.

My wife checked out its credentials (she used to work for Kent Police until a couple of years ago - handy, spoke to someone she knows there who confirmed that all is legit and put here through to the fraud department). I've spoken to them and an appointment will be arranged to see them just as soon as I can.

So if any of you guys who have been burnt meet the below criteria, PM me and I will get a list together that I can present to them.

The fraud is centralised to Austria. The listings in eBay are all "Buy it now" and are connected to various websites which, to all intents and purposes, are online stores much like the Apple Store. The items within the original listings are shown on the site to be part of their stock range at the prices
shown in the listing, looking legitimate. I fell for an iMac 24" 2.8Ghz - they also had MacBook Pros listed.

Such websites are:
www.onlineelectrostore.com
www.onlineelectrogifts.com
www.bc-hardware.com

and there are several others. They all look similar to each other and carry roughly the same 'stock'. I've tried getting on a couple of them lately and they appear to be down.

They have all insisted on bank transfer into Austrian accounts. In my case especially, the seller was using a hacked email account and a compromised email address. When I initially reported it to the police (local to the 'seller', in Bristol), they eventually got in touch with him and made sure that this was the case - eBay refused to comment as they have 'their own procedures' for following such things up. Needless to say, that's where it finished!

From the research that I have thus far managed to carry out, I've got all the details with regards to the hosting of the websites etc and a huge long list of account details from Austrian banks that transactions have been made out to, scavenged from website threads like this one.

I'm seeing the police at their earliest convenience. They haven't said I'll get my money back (haven't said I won't either) but if you've been banging your head against a wall and getting nowhere, this might be an avenue to check out. I don't want leg measurements - if you could just pass on:

What you 'bought'
How much
When
From where (list website if one was listed)
Also, it might be handy, if you still have them, to let me have the account details you sent your money to (I don't want any of your details, just the bit that looks like:

Account Name: Mark Nelson
Account number: 10210036143
Bank Name: P.S.K.
BLZ: 60000
BIC(SWIFT): OPSKATWW
IBAN : AT706000010210036143
Address: Wien, Austria

<this is one of the accounts they used>

Thanks for reading this, and if anyone feels like jumping in, feel free.

Yea .. I see that ... I was wondering how things were going and I just did a search for the seller and his account has been suspended.

I hope it works out for you but it doesn't look good.

You will get your money back SOM, things look positive in my opinion. May be a lengthy process but it will happen.

Back in post #89 I complained I got scammed on Ebay for a Mac Mini. I got the money back from Paypal today, and bought myself a refurb Mini from the Apple Store. I'm not trying to buy anything on Ebay for a while.

Hi there just want to share an experience i am going through at the moment regarding scammers on ebay.

So i have been looking for an iphone for a couple of weeks now and on monday of this week i found one i wanted to purchase on ebay, brand new low starting bid with twenty odd bids on it. The seller looked legit with a feedback of 136 (which i know now doesn't mean sh*t if the account is hijacked) plus in the description it outlined the seller would prefer pick up from west london, now that was very clever on his part knowing people would see this and think he was legit (because i did).

The weird part of all this though was the auction i bid on the item with 10 minutes to go with an amount of £210,i was the winning bidder until 5 minutes to go were i got outbid. So for some reason i looked on the sellers other items and he had another iphone identical to this one with a few days left with a higher price (keep this in mind) so i went back to the original auction were i bid a maximum bid of £213 this was my last attempt, with 1 minute left i got outbid and admitted defeat but as soon as the auction ended it appeared again with 2 minutes left??

I did not change my max bid and the auction ended with me being the winner with my maximum bid of £213 pus p+p £220. I was happy i won but in the back of my mind i was thinking what the hell just happened, now i have payed through paypal and was meant to take delivery 2days ago as the seller emailed me but i have still not received, has anyone ever heard of this type of scam of switching auctions or whatever??

I am just as confused as probably you are and sorry for the lengthy read if someone could offer some insight to this it would be much appreciated and to thread starter hope everything works out mate!

Hi,

Did you mean that you received an email saying that the auction is still going on, or when it ended and you clicked refresh that the auction was still going on? Or did the seller give you a second chance offer?

My concern is that in the first situation, the scammer (if it is true) could have created a link and page that resembles ebay, asking you to give your passwords for ebay and possibly paypal. They would then have your passwords.

I hope that is not the case, but I'm not sure what you meant in your post.
