Well it’s the worst time of the year again. I never cared for the holidays. Seems like a waste of time and money.

Anyone else year rather stay home and be a hermit on the holidays.

Certainly there are people who have some understandable issues with the holidays - there's a user that frequents this area with a life event that's clearly quite difficult to cope with (that's tied to this time of year).

That being said, let me ask you this: when you say "waste of time", that sort of implies instead of spending said time celebrating the holiday, laughing, eating, drinking with family or friends - things you consider a waste of time (certainly your prerogative), how are you spending that time? It must not be something wasteful, so developing a cure for cancer? Working at a homeless shelter? I mean, if meaningless frivolity is wasteful, then productive time must be solving some of humanity's greatest issues.

Waste of money? I'm reasonable frugal, but as I got older I realized if you could take some of your money, and make a happy moment, an amazing memory, give, help, use it to experience life, to celebrate family, love, why not? We spent money on a huge tree, it's beautiful, it makes us happy, we had a blast decorating as a family, some of the ornaments brought up terrific memories of family, some gone - it doesn't have any real financial affect on us, it's part of our life experience this time of year.

To each their own I suppose ...

Merry Christmas (oh, and Happy New Year).

;)

Do you know why the Dead Sea is 'dead?' Water flows into it and NOTHING flows out. I realize this is a simplistic analogy, but since you didn't really specify why you dislike the holiday....

Get over yourself and do things for others. You might be tempted to say 'I have nothing.' Really? You're not homeless. You're not living in a 3rd world country in a cardboard shack with 8 family members. You obviously have electricity, internet, and a computer. I know, it sounds like a Thanksgiving speech, but when we concentrate on ourselves and act the hermit, we're actually being selfish. Not just this time of the year, ANY time of the year. I realize we're not all extroverts, I'm not, but simple kindnesses do not require a certain personality type.

Speech over and good luck finding peace.

the Christmas tree is the worst. Takes over the room. Makes a mess. The decorations are tacky. Guess I’m just a grinch.

I spend time with my family all the time. Don’t need a holiday for that.

Just prefer to be by myself. Im not a fan of most people. Prefer my own company. Happy hanging with the pooch

I dont do much on anything. Definitely a homebody. Don’t like going out. Not social at all.

Christmas the ultimate commercial holiday.

Dude, if you were close by I’d totally invite you over - we have a 26 lb turkey that looks amazing, so much other food (the best homemade gravy, chocolate chip cookies), we’re watching super goofy Christmas movies, there’s enough booze here to intoxicate a __large__ army. We’re going to have a game throw down later too - might be console, card or board - maybe more than one. There’s so many lights inside we’re probably making the power company fire up additional generators - you’d get Christmas-y whether you want to or not :D

I tolerate the Christmas season because my wife and kids love it. I string up the lights, put up the tree, watch gawd awful Christmas show and pretend to enjoy myself because it makes them happy. Of course I'm dying inside, like Stock Photo Harold.

Of course, the real killer is the credit card bill in the aftermath of the Missus' Black Friday spree. Hide the pain, man. Hide the pain.
The only thing good about Christmas is spending time with my family. Hail, I do that every day, so Christmas is just another Wednesday to me.

Thanks but I don’t drink. Not fan of turkey. Can’t stand the Christmas movies. I have to endure them at times. my girlfriend and her daughter watch non stop Christmas movies. Great time for me to catch up on sleep.

I spend time with my family all the time. This isn’t anything new.

No.

Actually, Christmas is a pagan solstice feast on to which a nativity celebration has been added.

While it is not necessarily my own favourite time of year, I don't remotely begrudge those who enjoy it, and wish them well in enjoying the season.

Moreover, a well dressed, tastefully decorated tree is a real pleasure to behold.

Personally, I dislike winter, (rather than Christmas, although this year fr personal reasons, there is a special bitter-sweet element to the feast), but a feast to mark the darkest day with the message that the days may soon start to become longer and more full of light cannot but meet with my approval.

Excellent posts, @D.T., by the way.

Do you insist that they share your negativity towards the Yuletide celebration?

Or, do you make clear that you view their enjoyment of seasonal entertainment with contempt?

Why the “WOW

I’m someone who loves their family. Spends lots of time with them During the year

I never enjoyed the holidays. Thanksgiving starts my month of hell. Ends tomorrow at 7pm. Thank god.

I’m not a social person. Stay in almost every night. I usually try to work. Make double time and a half Dont have to do the Christmas thing. Best of both worlds.

I stopped with the 'wow' as it seems to me that you are someone who either needs counseling or meds. Since I am not a physician, I cannot recommend either.

You say you love your family, but it sounded like you were taking for granted that they're always around. Thank you for the clarification.

They know I hate this time of year. I keep quiet and do my thing. When they are watching Christmas 📺.

I’m glad they enjoy the holiday.

Ok. So now I need meds. Good thing I’m on them. Honestly would prefer to be off them. Hate taking meds everyday. The problem is when I’m off them it’s not good

Counseling is completely overrated. Telling my “deep secrets” to someone isn’t going help me.

I realize that my family won’t always be there. I spend lots of time with my family. All year long. What makes Christmas special compared to any other day?

We as a family just sit around the house these two days, drink coffee, eat some decent food, sit in front of the TV (not watching Christmas stuff) or whatever, and do none of the other Christmasy things. New Years Eve for us is pretty much the same thing. We don't go really big with Thanksgiving either. My parents are always tired and just like the days off.

Like looking at the lights people have up around the neighborhood though.

That’s what I wish my family did for the holidays. Pizza and a movie.

I'm a homebody. I work at home, have a small family and some very good friends. I used to be more social in my younger years but realized the value of true friendship and family, so that's my choice to keep the circle small. I get what you mean about the commercialization of the holidays but it happens every year and it is what you make of it. I lost my father this year between Halloween and Thanksgiving and I can tell you that I'd give everything I've got to spend time with my father doing whatever, no matter how trivial, unenjoyable or exciting. Enjoy your family and friends while you have them. Enjoy the time of year as best you can because life is short. For all of you.

Aside from that, it's that time of year to remember how fortunate we are and how much better the world is thanks to the miraculous birth of Christ.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all of you.

To those not celebrating, Ba Humbug.

Yikes. sounds like someone needs some eggnog..
Yum. Eggnog. Love that stuff. Wish I could add some booze but dont do that anymore.

I never liked Christmas past being a kid. As a child all I cared about was gifts. But in adulthood, I can afford what I want. So I don't really want gifts. Especially when I have to fake like I'm thankful, when I didn't really want or need something.

The only thing I like about Christmas is getting the kids (nieces and nephews) in my family gifts. I enjoy over spoiling them while my brothers and sisters give me dirty looks. 😁
But they also have birthdays scattered through out the year, so gifting seems redundant.

I also enjoy gifting my mother, but that gets harder by the year, as she has everything one could possibly want.

My lady doesn't care much neither. We just gift each other cheap stuff that make us smile or laugh.

The problem I have with Christmas, is that ...... It's at the wrong damn time of the year!!!! Sorry if I don't feel that chirpy Christmas spirit, but it's the freaking end of the year and I'm drained. Especially coming from a hustle atmosphere like NYC in the middle of winter climate.

I also don't get to see the majority of my extended family until the summer months, so that's the more important time for me.

that’s how I feel. Christmas morning with my kids is fun. But that’s over in 30 min. The day could end there and I’d be happy

As Noel Coward said, "Christmas is at our throats again."

I don't participate in the gift giving circus. My (adult) daughter and I cook a simple but delicious meal on Christmas day. I rejoice in the Solstice and the return of longer days and enjoy our patio lights (which stay up all year). I make a funny Solstice card, spend time outdoors, drink delicious wine and remember what I'm grateful for.

The rest of the "holiday" crap I ignore.
