Kinda what I expected for the upgrade, not enough for me to do it though. I did order the new strap. One smaller one for the kids as well.

Given that less than 1% buy the VP, it will have the same cycle as the Mac Pro. 2-3 years.
Personally I feel like it is worth the price for what you get compared to other options. It needs running macOS apps too. That might come later.

the S0 was uniquely compromised in a way that I don't feel the VP1 is, I think this will be closer to the iPad 1 vs 2. (The iPad 2 still smashed the 1, but it wasn't immediate abandonment...) I mean the S0 didn't even have built in GPS and it quickly became obvious the primary customer base for the AW was going to be fitness.

Horrible example. The iPad 1 aged hilariously bad 😅

Both iPad and Watch V1 were wildly successful and sold out for months. Any comparison to those products is ridiculous.

Vision Pro has been ignored by most consumers since day one.

Honestly. Buying the iPad 1 and watching it get abandoned in 2 years is why I don’t buy v1 releases of new products from Apple.

Apple went from 256MB RAM in the iPad 1 to 512MB RAM in the iPad 2. iPad 1 came with iOS 3.2. It never saw iOS 6.

Decided I’m going to order it and try it

Won’t lie it’s for using with my Mac and NBA and overall content more than anything

Bummed that the rumored Space Black didn’t come out. Would be even more bummed if it was a delayed release that came out right after I bought one. I’ll probably make my way to a store and try the one and see if it’s time to pull the trigger yet.

I'm not going to do anything for about 5 months due to some other commitments but when the time comes in May next year I'm going to look at 2 quite different options pretty much exclusively for productivity when travelling (a MacBook virtual terminal mostly for working on complicated Excel spreadsheets) and for media consumption both at home and when travelling.

Firstly I'm going to get a pair of the best XR/AR glasses available in May 2026. Unless someone like Samsung comes out with some significantly better almost certainly Android XR based glasses I expect that best-I-can-get in May next year will be a top-of-the-range model from XReal or Viture somewhere in the $600 - $800 price point. Right now it's looking as if the state of the art then is going to be 1200p OLED displays with something like 53 degree FoV (e.g. Viture's "The Beast") so I'll see if those give me an acceptable virtual monitor working environment (that's the one I expect to be the more challenging of my two use cases, if it can do that then I suspect media consumption will be no problem).

If the XR glasses are sufficient for my use cases then I will keep them and not get an AVP because for travelling glasses will be far more portable than AVP, cheaper, and I am pretty sure more comfortable to wear for extended periods. I will then wait it out with whatever glasses I end up with and almost certainly upgrade to Apple's rumoured glasses if/when they come out to get a VisionOS experience and hopefully by then an improvement in resolution and FoV.

The other possible outcome is that I find the mid-2026 level of XR/AR technology (resolution, FoV, outside distractions etc) to be insufficient to give me an acceptable experience in which case I would return whatever XR/AR glasses I bought (with a small loss because I wouldn't get the money back on the prescription inserts that I will need) and get an M5 AVP.

It's definitely going to be super interesting to see how Samsung and Google headset works.
There are way more android users around the world, and a new headset that syncks and connects to the whole android ecosystem could be a positive experience if everything on android can be used with these headsets.

They got me once, but not twice. I`m out on this upgrade.
I personally think it’s worth the price compared to other options. Plus you get huge high quality screen and compute. I’m sure it will run macOS apps sooner or later.

I bought Samsung and meta quest once. Will never do it again due to very poor software quality!

I got my Viture Pro XR glasses a little over a year ago to try to use as a virtual monitor with my MacBook, but it didn't work well for me so I stopped. I think the main issue was that the MacBook didn't recognize the glasses as a normal external display, so it was a kind of hack to make it act like a display, and as with any hack, there are little annoying issues and limitations. Maybe none of them individually were deal breakers, but collectively they were more than I wanted to deal with. It's been a while so I can't remember what they were.

But I remember other issues I had more related to hardware:
- no clear view of the world due to the sunglass tint (which is necessary for helping you see the display) and reflections from the display. This was a big deal for me because I wanted the virtual display as a supplement to other physical displays and devices I was using.
- small FOV (I can't remember if you can see the whole screen without turning your head--maybe barely)
- often having to recenter the virtual display because of drift

I realized the glasses don't really qualify to me as an AR device, because to me AR is meant to enhance your view of the world, but this mostly blocks out the world and you're really just meant to focus only on the virtual display. So for me it's just been relegated to an HUD for mirroring full screen media content, and for that it's pretty good.

My virtual monitor attempts were about a year ago though, so I don't know if things have changed since then.

Thanks for this really useful account of your experiences. They highlight all of my concerns. I’m hoping that these deficiencies will be at least somewhat reduced by the time I get an experimental (i.e. might send back within the return window) pair of whatever I select in about 6 months time.

Specifically wrt Viture the upcoming “Beast” advertises a 58 degree FoV vs 46 degrees for the Pro XR so that at least should be an improvement but even then these claims by all to manufacturers of > 100” (sometimes even more like 200”) screens are so misleading. I did some basic trigonometry on a 58 degree FoV and worked out that even with that a full FoV virtual screen would look to me pretty much exactly the same size as the 32” monitor I have in my office when viewed from the same distance I am away from my physical monitor when at my desk. That’s actually good enough if “and it’s a big if” it’s sharp enough all the way to the edges and it’s not got that drift you mention because all I am trying to do is replicate my in-office monitor when travelling, any more will be a bonus.

I guess I’ll find out in 6 months or so whether the hardware and software has improved sufficiently since you tried this for it to be a usable option in 2026.

Another advantage of my phased approach is that by delaying any potential purchase of a 2nd gen AVP by 6 or 7 months I suppose it’s just possible that Apple might rethink the pricing by then. Even if that was only a few hundred Dollars downwards it would be better than nothing but I’m not holding out much hope for that because Apple has been very resolute on pricing for the AVP product life up to now. At the very least though there might be more options for refurb units or good condition used units on eBay if I do decide that glasses won’t cut it and I need an AVP.

Just placed my order. Trying demo on Wednesday as well

Went for 1TB so same price as 256GB for gen 1 was
Your use case is same as mine, be great if you could report back on how you like your demo.

I'm away at work, plan to demo again when home then purchase. Had a demo a couple months ago and was impressed but was easy to walk away knowing it was due a refresh

for sure, i'm picking up the m5 ipad pro on this day as well so busy morning.

only issue is i never had a demo on the m2 vision pro so can't really judge the band from current ones.

I was so taken in by how intuitive the user interface was and how impressive the visuals were that I don't remember much about the band.
I do remember taking AVP off after the 30min session and feeling the pressure relief on my face after removing it.

A new developer strap will be available to order on the 22nd. Wonder what’s changed with it (no details beyond the order date on the dev page).
