What have you specifically done to set up your iPad so that you can use it without eyestrain and headaches?

I have True Tone off and set at 100% brightness - anything else I should try?

For some reason, limit frame rate to 60Hz really helped for me.

I keep True Tone enabled and just set whatever normal brightness I've always used (typically 0-30%). Brightness at 100% hurts my eyes.

Doesn’t higher brightness reduce flicker? And wouldn't this combined with using the “reduce white point” slider be a solution?

Yes but it seems the frequency is high enough on the 2021 12.9 that after initial adjustment, it doesn't really bother me anymore.

As for 100% brightness with reduce white point, that would still be too bright for me in most cases as well as being a sure-fire way to drain the battery quickly. If that's the only way I could tolerate the Mini-LED, I would just return the iPad.

Hiya Rui,

How are you getting on with the 2021 Mini-LED Ipad?
Are you able to use like the old iPad now, comic reading for hours etc?

Worth the upgrade from the 2020 Ipad?

Hope all is well after the initial adjustment to mini-LEDs!

Best Wishes

Yep. No issues with the Mini-LED now. Great for comic reading and videos.

I upgraded from the 2017 Pro 12.9 512GB LTE though. If I already had the 2020 Pro 12.9 1TB LTE, I think I probably would've waited 1-2 more generations before upgrading.

Hi Rui,

Cool, glad to here it :)

I have the 2020 version, so also good to know not a huge quantum jump with the latest 2021 with mini LED. I'd like to hang onto my 2020 one for a good number of years yet. The screen etc. is fab and I'm pretty happy with the whole package. I'm a bit pushed to imagine how much better it can get to make it worth such a fast upgrade.

It would also be good to let Mini LED iterations run for a few years, PWM kinks ironed out as much as possible etc., before I upgrade.

Regards
Martin

This is entirely subjective. I don't resell so at least for me, iPad Pros have just gotten too expensive to be upgrading on a yearly basis.

Hi Rui,

Yes, that's just it... my IPP 2020 was way expensive, I was a bit trigger happy with the options on opening day.

Do I regret it? Not really, bit of a one off treat. Really happy with it, use it every day, awesome bit of kit.... but way expensive...

Best Wishes 😄

I dont know what's wrong with Apple's displays... they just seem to bother my eyes and it is not the PWM. I tried almost every option... macbook air m1, ipad pro, ipad air 3, iphone. They all make my eyes extremely dry. This was not present however with older devices like macbook air 2015 and iPhone 6S, but unfortunately they are too old for me to use because I need more performance for university. In the begining I thought it was the PWM, but then I tried a samsung galaxy tab S7 plus, and.... no problems, even after several hours using the screen !!! When with the ipad pro, my eyes are getting dry as hell if I use it for several hours, and the galaxy tab definitely has PWM at low brightness and I use it almost all the time under 20% !
Maybe OLED pannels are a better match for my eyes, but then why the iphones are bothering my eyes, wtf!
It looks like the apple screens are too saturated and too contrasty, and my eyes have a hard time because of it, I end up having blured vision if I read text for a lomg itime on them, but not on the samsung galaxy tab. Weird.

It's a shame, apples devices are so good right now, and are even better briced that a lof of other brands. I wish I could use them, but unfortunately for now I give up.

Keep trying. I am sure you will find one that will work. Try what people are recommending, ex iPhone 11, 2018 iPad pro. For me iPhone 12, M1 MBA, and 2017 iPad Pro 12 are what I am using currently without eye strain.

Thank you for the encouragements! My next try is the iphone 12. I hope it works out. It's really weird that older devices are not doing this (I also forgot to mention that I have an ipad air 1st gen and it does kot bother me. In fact this display is one of the easiest on the eyes.

After PWM, e.g. pulsating light, the second most important factor for me seems to be light spectrum.
It is definitely healthier on OLED than on miniLED, so for some people one factor is more or same important than the other.
Total tolerance is a vector product of [flickerTolerance, spectrumTolerance] x [flickerFrequency, spectrumQuality]
I am not starting on the dithering (FRC) yet, since it is a distant third factor - for me.
Light polarization a factor too...
