Can't say I miss MagSafe all that much. The magnet was rather weak. I much prefer the ability to charge my computer from either side and the use of a standard connector. The thing I did like about MagSafe however was the speed with which you could "plug" in your computer.

There's no magnetic charger anymore? What the heck is it gonna come with? Mine should be here Monday or Tuesday and I didnt even know this. I love the magnetic charger. I dont even have to look at the machine; just hold it near the port and bam it connects. I'm gonna miss that. I'm going to hit the "Post Reply" button and do a little research.

No way. MagSafe was terrible.
  • It is a single purpose port.
  • Plus the cord gets damaged easily. Give me the USB-C ports any day of the week. My 2015 12" MB cord still works to this day and has zero damage.
  • Being able to plug into any port and power my device is more important to me than charging with a Magnet.
I will say that the power light was useful. Maybe replacing that audio jack with a power light might have been more useful or putting a light somewhere visible on the MBP or the USBC cord to let me know that my machine is charging would've been nice.
I have never understood how people can treat their cords like crap, and blame the cord. You do not grab the cord to unplug the cable...

I have the lightning cable that came with my iPhone 5, still using it on my desk every day for my iPhone 7+/iPad/iPod/ATV remote everything.
My 2010 13" MBP's Magsafe cord is still in great shape.
The only cable I have ever owned that broke/frayed etc was a Monster cable.

I will buy one of those break away cables that plugs into the USB-C cable when I get the new MBP.

I guess they screwed them up later, because I have 2 of them for my 5 year old 2011 and they are still going strong.

For those of you with a new 2016 MBP do you miss the magsafe connector? I think this is a great feature and has saved my computer from being yanked on the floor several times.

It's saved me a few times in the past. But I've also been frustrated that it's been on the side of the Macs I wish it wasn't. With my desk and most of the locations, it seems the right side works best for me. With that said, I'm liking USB-C and the ability to charge with an external battery pack on the go as well.

I never was a big fan of MagSafe. I always had to clean the connectors or it wouldn't work properly anymore after a few months. But maybe it was just bad luck.

Anyway, it never saved my MacBook from any accidents, probably because I only charge it at my desk. But I can see how some might miss it.

i have dropped my win-laptop few times to the floor because of the powercord, my dog has dropped my iphone/ipad to the floor, because of the cable.. . never happened to my mbp, thanks to the magsafe. im going to buy an usbc-"quick attach" -thing when i find one.

Saw a review video trying to yank the USB-C charger to see if if would release. Ended up destroying the cable connector and it destroyed the charging circuitry.

Also connecting 2 Apple charging power briks destroyed the ability to charge the battery.

Haven't watched the video, but are you sure that's what will happen if you plug in multiple chargers? Apple has very publicly stated that if you try to do this, the MacBook Pro will simply detect which cable has the highest current and charge from that cable (it's there in black and white on their support website). Not to mention they made a very huge deal of being able to plug in two 5k monitors, which will mean that your laptop will be charged by two cables simultaneously most of the time.

if i remember correctly (i watched it few days ago), the laptop didnt charge anymore if you had plugged it to the 2 or more charger at once.

i hope that it is not a real issue and you broke your laptop accidentally if you plug two chargers at once.. it would be inconvenient to be sure that you connect only one charger at once because they all looks the same now (usbc cables).

I've been very vocal in my disappointment over the loss of magsafe. I think its one of those innovations that solved a real problem that still exists today.

I'm in hotel rooms where there may not be a place for my laptop and the cable is across the floor. Someone catching their foot on the cable is a real issue and mag safe has saved my computer a number of times.

There seems to be third party solutions coming out however and that's a great thing

griffin breaksafe is already out, but designed for 12" macbook, working also with 13" (and maybe with 15").. but im waiting to get a new version and tinier like snapnator.

MagSafe did indeed save my old Macbook Air from disaster at least a couple of times over the course of the years.

It was a very useful and underated concept that addressed a REAL problem in a simple yet effective manner.

So yes, I do miss it.

I'm not exactly gentle on my laptops, but I've yet to need to clean the port on my 13" MBP(my first Mac) after 4 1/2 years of use. The worse that I've had happen is it pick up a staple or paperclip from the bottom of my backpack, something that's easily pulled away.

I've bought used laptops where I needed to clean the port, but all it takes is just a quick wipe-down. Even if the port is relatively exposed, there's nothing on it to break easily. Since it's also fairly shallow, it doesn't take anything more than a quick wipe-down to clean.

usb c is great. No longer do you have to rely on Apple for chargers. You'll be able to buy a third party version for cheaper that includes magsafe functions. I am disappointed, though, that Apple didn't add a magsafe-like feature to their chargers, as clearly it is possible.

Magsafe was great, the cords were pretty average especially considering the ridiculous price of the thing.

I'll throw in support for Magsafe. I think it was a brilliant solution to a common problem. and being able to just pickup and go without having to first unplug was a small but positive and real convenience. all these years later I still get a kick out of it.

I've had and used a wide variety of Magsafe enabled machines since 2009. the magnets and the cable plugs always worked well. I was for several years in charge of purchasing and some of the maintenance at an office with over a dozen Airs and MBPs. can recall only a single frayed or broken charger cable or connector (that wasn't the result of blatant abuse, like rolling a chair wheel over it multiple times). there were a few chargers that died. but we weren't always buying new (couldn't face paying retail for something that a coworker was going to lose within 6 months). but we also had chargers that were years old, still working. and working on multiple families and generations of Apple portables.

I also mourn the loss of the charging light. a glance from across the room would tell you whether it was charged. charging, not getting power. no need to be near or open the machine. no need for the machine to even be on.

Turns out I don't miss it. With MagSafe I must have had to reconnect 10 times a day, just from it getting disconnected as I moved my MBP' s and air's around. And not once in 9 years did MagSafe actually prevent my computer from falling.

The usb-c connector stays put and I can plug in either side.

Only reason I miss MagSafe would be that I have a dozen or so MagSafe and MagSafe 2 power supplies, and over time they will become useless to me.
