That was MagSafe 2 right ? The original MagSafe was much better connection
The best connector was the right angle Magsafe that shipped with the 2011ish MacBook Air. The original Magsafe and Magsafe 'T' connectors weren't great if you weren't using the machine on a desk.

Given the poxy the quality of Apple cables are, I'm glad the USB-C cable separates from the adapter proper - here's to hoping someone comes out with a nice, right angle USB-C cable that can run parallel to the side of the machine.

Yeah I have a 2011 MBA and it's by far the best connector they ever made

When my MagSafe cables failed it was ALWAYS at the MagSafe end. It only falls near the brick if you don't wrap the cable right (you need to leave a slack loop at the brick before you start wrapping).

Apple always gave me free replacements - must have gotten more than half a dozen from them by now. As long as you have some Mac under active apple care or warrantee they just hand them out like candy.
They refused to give me a free replacement even when I was under warranty. They wanted to charge me $60.

When I charge my iPhone it lights up when connected (I have silent mode on 100%)

With my rMBP 2015 I always check for light on magsafe to ensure its charging.

There have been occasion on both devises where they haven't charged (when I didn't check for lights etc)

On the 2016 rMBP is there anyway of being sure that the device is charging? without opening the lid

If there isn't a light and or beep I see this as a major drawback.

Thanks

I get a beep when I plug in. Maybe because I turned the "boot sound" back on - don't recall if it beeped before that.

That is not true. The L-connector stuck to the machine in such a way one could easily lift and drag the notebook, it almost didn't disconnect (didn't matter if it were the small and light MBA or the heavy and big 15" MBP). The T-connectors never did that, they immediately disconnected when you started pulling on them in whatever direction so only these actually worked as advertised. Funnily this was also the main complaint by a lot of people. People who don't like the easy disconnect of the T-connector favour the L-connector and those who don't like the difficult disconnect of the L-connector favour the T-connector.

What I'm wondering is whether these magnetic USB-C disconnect thingies can only be used for charging or if they can also be used for something like USB 3.1 Gen 1 or 2 or even Thunderbolt 3. That would solve an issue we've had ever since the first version of MagSafe: the power connection being the only disconnect one so people would still trip over your cables (especially if you connected a network cable).

these new connectors are power only.

Theres a beep instead of light now, and the iphone gets a charging symbol

I'm sure it's been said a bunch here already, but throwing my two cents in that I really am loving the port configuration of the 2016. I missed MagSafe at first but the ability to power it from any port, and the ability to turn any port into whatever you'd like at the time is awesome. The number of times it's been appreciated that I can power it from the right side is growing, and the whole thing just feels smart.

Dongles suck, but when I'm on my desk, my power and USB 3.0 port stay on the left to keep out of the mouse area on the right - and when I'm in bed, my laptop is powered via the right side where the power is at the wall, and my USB 3.0 port is there as well charging my e-cig / connecting my mouse for some Overwatch / whatever may be needed. It feels less like dongles and more like versatility, I guess.

True, versatility is awesome, in a way we have 4 usb3, 4 usb-c , 4 thunderbolt 3, 4 sd card slots, 4 charging ports, 4 displayports etc... alot more options than before

Also daisy chaining up to 6 devices on one port, so macbook has never been this connectable before

Came from a MBP 2007 to 2016... love it but I'd be lying if I said MagSafe never saved my MBP from getting tossed on the floor. I have a 120lbs Anatolian Shepherd dog that has snagged that cord a number of times. Now I try to be extra careful as I don't want my MBP dancing across the floor.

I don't know if this was said before anywhere else. I think the reason for magsafe removal is for future laptops down the line, as weight gets lower the laptop itself would be too light and magsafe won't disconnect reliably when somebody walk over your cable.

I noticed this on macbook air 11" the laptop would be pulled along with the cable quite often, until even stronger pull disconnect the magsafe.

I believe Apple wants the MacBooks to be like iDevices - charge overnight and use during the day.

Now, I agree that not all configurations are capable of delivering enough battery life for this to be real, but I believe that's what they're going after.

I will say, however, that my base 2.0GHz ntMBP actually does have enough battery life for me to run around all day without the charger.

I don't like the new MacBook Pro and, although I intended to replace my current MBP, once I saw the specs and the price, I've decided to not bother.

But getting rid of the Magsafe is the best thing about the new MBP in my opinion. I've always hated it. The number of times I've plugged in my Mac to charge, come back to it a couple of hours later to find the Magsafe popped off seconds after it was plugged in and therefore hasn't charged.

Or when I move on my bed and it pops off and falls to the floor.

The argument that it'll save my Mac from being pulled off a desk is not something I can relate to.

Good riddance Magsafe.

Based on most of these comments I must be either lucky or less demanding than others. I say this because I have never had a problem with the magsafe connector being too weak or the cable falling apart. I feel the connection is just the right amount of strength.
