I'm going with the iPad Mini Retina for the following reasons

1. I tested a regular mini's screen size as far as what I do most: read blogs, view youtube, and play games and the screen was certainly big enough.
2. It fits in my pocket so I can take it everywhere, hands free
3. The CandyShell case that I LOVE from Speck is made for the Mini but not for the iPad
4. Since it's $100 less I can get a 32gb model for same price of a base iPad Air
5. And just to top it off.. it's lighter than the iPad air.

Thought I saw that the mini was coming out late November? IMO, the iPad air is the one to get. I like bigger screens and that wins everytime. Not enough of a price difference between the mini and the air either to make the mini more intriguing.

iPad air is my vote.

Excellent point.

Is having the ability to put a device in your pocket really that big of a selling point for you? Have you ever had an iPad mini in your pocket? From first hand experience, it really isn't that comfortable. :p

It's not comfortable, but you can do it. If I need my hands, i can store it quickly. I can leave home with it and have a place to hold it w/out taking a "holder". Not possible at all with 9.7"

Had a ipad 3 retina....got an iPad mini and eventually sold iPad 3...while i had both loved the size of the mini In comparison to the 3...but couldn't keep my eyes off the screen of the iPad 3. In comes nexus 7....whoa...I could put it in my pocket! fits in every pant pocket I own...now with the announcement of all the iPads, I think I will keep my nexus 7 as my take ANYWHERE device, but get an air as my workhorse tablet device....I am mostly an apple guy....(household) macbook air x 2, iPads x 3, iMac x1, Apple TV x 2, but i do use an android phone while my wife is iphone...waiting to see what iphone 6 has to offer...

Overall...iPad Air is a sweet device...and one I will surely go after....

You must have really BIG pockets!!Mini fits in my "oversized" jacket thats about it....

Where are you guys taking you're mini, to the gym lol. Just kidding. With the new slimmed down Air I think that, & my iPhone 5 make a good combo. I use the iPhone 5 while out and about.

Than again I don't travel much or do the chill out at the coffee shop type thing. "Ain't nobody got time for that" :p

There was never any doubt for me, the full sized iPad, which is now called the Air. The Mini is just too small. I do a lot of writing on my iPad, so I want the larger keyboard and screen. I'm getting the 128GB because I need the space for movies for traveling, and for Airplaying around the house.

I seriously considered getting the cellular version, but it is so easy to set up my 5s as a mobile hotspot, plus I don't have to pay extra for another device on my mobile share plan. So I'm saving the money and getting the wifi version.

Funny. Before the event, everybody wanted a retina mini because many claimed it was "just a better size", but now it seems many are crossing back to the bigger ipad, the air.

Personally I think the marketing has worked. The name air makes it feel new and special.

Be that as it may, I still think the iPad Air is an fantastic piece of kit and will be getting one to replace my ipad2!

Actually I think shaving off 20% thickness, 30% weight and making slightly smaller with decreased bezel is what makes people reconsider, not the "new and special name".

Considering the price hike of the mini w retina, if I was in the market i'd do iPad Air.

On the other hand, the mini as the same resolution (higher PPI) and same internal specs as the iPad Air, and costs $100 less. I have the current iPad mini and will likely go for the mini again this year.

I'm on the fence about being on the fence.

I had a 4 and a mini simultaneously for almost a year. I used the 4 at home for reading and looking at photos; I used the mini for commuting and traveling. I sold the 4 and ended up missing it very much, and at the same time, became very comfortable with the mini as my only iPad.

It stands to reason that I'd get the retina mini as an upgrade, but with the Air being so much lighter and thinner, almost like a mini+, I feel compelled to consider it over the mini.

OTOH, when the iPad 2 came out, after owning the 1, a lot of people, myself included, gushed over how thin and light it was. A few months later, we were all tired of lugging it around and not being able to hold it with one hand.

The mini truly changed the game, and it's hard to backpedal. I have a hunch even the Air will come to feel heavy eventually, like its ancestors.

Hmmm, I was planning on the iPad air before it was announced because I thought the mini would be worse than the full sized one, but now the only difference is the screen size and the price. Also, I am pretty sure the air has better battery life so I might still buy that, but ever since I tried the mini the full sized ones feel so clunky and brick like...I don't know what to do! I am also waiting to see if maybe the air has more ram than the mini or 4.

Before the announcement, I had my mind made up ..... even if the only thing the mini got was retina, then I'd be replacing my gen 1 mini with the new mini.

The fact that the new mini "as far as we are told" has the same internals as the Air makes me want it more.

However, having drawn out the size of the Air on paper (and if you have a big iPad, imagine your device without one of the side bezels and that's the width of the Air), I'm now moving towards the Air.

But, the retina mini has higher DPI screen ... something on the Air MUST be better than the mini, and not just the bigger screen, surely?

This was known well in advance. We knew the measurements. We know it was going to be light. It's the name. Hell, it's worked on me and I was already getting it. A fantastic Marketing idea, extremely well implemented.

But as I stated earlier. It's a fantastic product, but really nothing we weren't expecting except for the name.

At the end of the day everybody will want to try the iPad first-hand in Apple stores before making the final decision.

I was very eager for iPad Air before the announcement but looking the spec of iPad Mini and having trying my friend's iPad Mini for a while, I might have to change my mind.

I was convinced I was getting a retina mini before the announcement. However, with the price increase for the mini and the weight and size decrease for the air, I think air is the way to go. I thought that perhaps for travelling the mini would be better, but honestly, for the few times I want a travelling device, I can bring my ipod touch or buy a Nexus 7 which is even smaller than the mini and would therefore fit in pockets better AND includes GPS for FAR less money.

But keep in mind as Steve said a lot of R&D went into the original ipad and it was determined to be the best, most productive size and there is a reason they produced a 9" model and that's what I'm most likely going with, after trying both out at the store. Not to mention for $100 more I'm getting almost 25% more screen and a much larger (~50%) battery.

A much larger battery that isn't going to mean anything for you whatsoever. Doesn't matter the size of the battery, it's all relative and runtime is what's important.

That was not what I was going to do but saving the $100 would be nice. I already have a Mini and didn't really want another but ....

The ipad mini and air have the same hardware, except for the 25% screen size difference. I saw the stats somewhere on the watt hours of the battery and the air has a battery with approx. 50% higher capacity which likely means in real world use it will last longer. It's running the same cpu, etc. LCD screens do not use much energy, so I would expect battery life to be better on the air; however, both will likely last all day so it may not be a big issue.

Actually now that I see t mobile is offering free data for ipads, I am reconsidering getting the cellular more portable mini!

The screen on the iPad mini is 43% larger than the screen on the Nexus 7. I had a 3rd Gen iPad and switched to the mini last year. It's great on trains or while a passenger in a car. I intend to get the Retina Mini this year, if I can find one. That said, the Air is tempting since they got the weight and size down a lot. However, the mini's screen is a good size, as well.

Remember, Steve Jobs was touting what he had to sell. His comments about 7" devices is also frequently taken out of context. Remember, it isn't just about an extra 0.9". It is also the 4x3 aspect ratio compared to the narrower 16x9 ratio of the 7" Android devices.

The way I see it, the Air and mini are virtually identical devices now. The Air is $100 more and has a bigger screen and battery. The mini is $100 less and has a higher pixel density and is more portable. It isn't really the same situation as last year, when the $329 mini had an older processor and lesser quality screen. To me, the mini is "more" for less.

The weight differential between the iPad 4 and iPad mini was substantial. Now it is much less betwen the iPad Air and new iPad mini.

I think Apple's move was two-fold. They obviously don't have enough iPad minis to go around. Perhaps they got caught flatfooted and weren't planning to release a Retina version until 2014 but had to change their plans when the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire came out. Or perhaps they just had trouble achieving yields (since the mini has a similar PPI to the Nexus 7 but 43% more screen size and pixels). Either way, it will be hard to get.

By pricing the mini at $399, they may be trying to "upsell" people to the new iPad Air at $499. First of all, they'll have plenty of iPad Air in stock. Lately the mini has been outselling the larger iPad. This may change that, at least temporarily. Once supplies are in order, I wouldn't be surprised to see a price adjustment some time in 2014 (maybe to $349).

For me, the mini was never about screen size. It was about weight.

You lost me when you said LCDs don't use much power. On a device this size they use easily the majority of power. The iPad Mini has about 35% less screen to power, the battery life should be comparable. Don't forget they increased the battery capacity on the Mini by nearly 50%.

Well funny thing was everyone wanted the ipad mini retina for the same price at $329 and not $399! Same goes with the 5c when everyone wanted to be cheaper than $549.

Smaller screen but same number of pixels to power. I would expect the power consumption to be pretty close.
