Honestly, when I read these posts, it seems that all the people who have given up unlimited to save money on that new phone are hard at work trying to make themselves feel better about loosing it by pointing out how it is not worth this cost and that cost... Unlimited is as good as gold... In my opinion anyway.. Good for you to those who feel that they are getting a better bargain for giving it up... But, I'll gladly pay full price to keep it. If the cost is too high, maybe ill just keep my phone longer to get more bang for my buck,,

Yup, I love being able to use my phone and never have to worry about data overages. Also being on unlimited I still have access to unlimited hotspot when I need it. Once again worth it. With LTE unlimited is even more valuable IMHO.

Same here... my costs for the subsidized phone would end up costing me more than paying for the new phone.

My actual decision was to pay $399 for the 64GB phone, start a new line. Move the phone to my line with unlimited data, and put a dumb phone on that new line. It'll be about $14 per month with that new line without any data.

So, $400 + $14/month/two years.... $736.

If I had done it with the changing plan to the fam share...
$400 for the phone, $40/month/two years.... $1360; and I would lose the beneficial features. I wouldn't gain any features that are wanted or needed.

Actually what you could have done is changed your new line to a data only tablet line for $40/month and get 4gb shared data for an ipad or other tablet. Well you can still do that now I suppose.

The more lines you have the more the new share plans actually make sense.

I have a single line. A 4GB share plan would be almost double what I pay right now. Paying retail and selling my old phone was well worth it to keep my old plan.

Right single lines are a different story.

That's not what I mean.

I can see paying full retail to keep unltd if you have 1-2 lines.

A coworker has 4 lines and what he does is upgraded all 4 lines at once around Christmas as part of presents.

Pricey to upgrade 4 lines at full retail. He was always ok upgrading at $200'ish each.

I gotcha. If money was ok, meaning, I didn't over spend, lol I'd keep my plan the way I want it and spend the money on the phones.

No because I upgrade every year under a 4 line family plan; 2 per year. I would have to buy each phone outright and pay the same monthy cost that everyone else is paying. If you upgrade your phone every year that ends up being $900 more just for one person in a 2 year period. Yup, Verizon got me.

----------

Imagine all the faces that paid full retail. Eventually Verizon is going to flip the switch once all those 2 year contracts are up. Only choice is crappy Sprint or a half baked T-Mobile solution.

Most people that pay full retail also sell their old phone. So let's say you buy the 16 GB for 649.99. If you sell it on Craigslist on a bad day you will get 300 for a 16 GB 4S. So you actually end up paying 349.99 for the phone and you get to keep your unlimited. Seems like a good deal.

I gotcha. If money was ok, meaning, I didn't over spend, lol I'd keep my plan the way I want it and spend the money on the phones.

Not too many people I know are able to spend $2800'ish(4 lines at full retail) every 2 years for smartphones.

Even if you factor in selling 4 iPhones @ $300 the $2800'ish goes down to $1600'ish every 2 years.

Again having a single line is a no brainer.

I still have unlimited on my mifi hotspot 4g. In a typical month I can use around 40-50gb. There have been some months where I touched 80gb. No throttling at all. So happy I made the switch to Verizon back in 2010. :)

They offered unlimited on a 4G hotspot? I thought they quit that with the 3G sometime before the 4G came out. Damn, wish I had caught that and switched our unlimited 3G hotspot account.

What's going to happen when Verizon decides to eliminate unlimited (or cap it like AT&T)?

Mass hysteria?

It will happen. And when it does all of the people who paid to "keep" unlimited will face the reality that there is no contract, and they're sol.

They'll threaten to sue, leave, cry, whatever...

But they won't have unlimited any more

They are still offering it as of today for special customers:D

I'm glad I paid full price to keep unlimited. It was either that or wait until November for my upgrade, and lose my unlimited. 6GB used, going on 7 since Sept 25th. I think I might take advantage of the 4G Hotspot too, $30!!

yep. there are lots of jealous dicks that would love for that to happen just out of pure spite. i don't see it happening for a very long time, if at all, because theres only a small percentage of us that had the intelligence to keep it in the first place. no point in wondering about that now. we're enjoying our entire pizza while most are sharing an expensive chicken mcnugget.

I'm wondering if they can do so on 4G LTE due to their terms with the FCC. My assumption is that they keep offering the unlimited tethering due to those terms.

We need to keep a little bookmark section of these threads so we know who to thank when Verizon either eliminates unlimited or puts a throttle cap like AT&T. If you guys think that Verizon is going to be let folks use 50GB's a month and not do something your just wrong. AT&T did and Verizon will to.

So what arbitrary limit are we supposed to be setting on our unlimited usage? Why do you pay for unlimited and choose to only use X amount? Just switch to a tiered plan and be done with it if that's how you feel. The rest of us will continue to pay extra for, and use, unlimited tethering.

Also people have been using 50-150GB/mo for over a year on Verizon 4G LTE - since the Thunderbolt was released. They still offer the same exact unlimited tethering $30/mo plan for anyone with unlimited 4G. If they were going down the AT&T path they would have stopped offering that feature to users who don't already have it. They haven't.

You can call me whatever name you want. Fact remains that Verizon has made it clear they don't want true unlimited (to the extent of no subsidies just to "keep" it).

It's going to end. Just a matter of when. You have no contract it will continue, even if you just paid full price for your phones.

You can "look at it" however you want lol...

And no, no jealousy for paying full price for a feature they could take away at any time. Quite the opposite actually. Pity

Can't stop them from taking it from me, but I'm giving it away either. They way people are giving it away, it may not be an issue with the few that keep it. No guarantee that they will just take it away... Big assumption on your part..

No, it's a waste of money. I don't need to justify my reasoning for going tiered to anyone, especially myself!. The numbers speak for themselves... Why would I continue to over pay for something I don't use? Like it or not, you ARE paying a $22.50/mo. PREMIUM to keep your unlimited data. You paid full price for your phone.

True so in reality $52.50/month for unlimited. Now if you pay full price to retain unlimited do you still need a contract or are you month to month?

I don't pay full price just for unlimited data. I pay so I'm not locked in to any particular provider. The unlimited data is icing on the cake. If they change their business model and I'm not happy.. Goodbye and no etf. Glad you are happy with what you have.. That's all that is important.

Month-to-month meaning you could get an email one day that says "In an effort to ___________________________________ we are converting any current non-contract users to XYZ contract effective ___________ " and then you're back to square one.

Is that likely? Probably not right now... but it is possible and it wouldn't be unheard of.

I did and I haven't regretted it. I used almost 2GB of data on the first day!
Here in the bay area, CA, its incredibly fast.

I am a bit pissed that the reps at VZW lied to me on launch day saying they wern't selling retail phones, only new customers and upgrades. And they almost strong-armed me into giving up my unlimited data, what a bunch of jerks.

I'm hoping to slam them this month with my data plan,
i sure as hell didn't buy the phone to keep it on wi-fi only!

My buddy did but hasn't gotten his phone yet. Though he checked is usage lately and he's never gone over 2gb.
