Month-to-month meaning you could get an email one day that says "In an effort to ___________________________________ we are converting any current non-contract users to XYZ contract effective ___________ " and then you're back to square one.

Is that likely? Probably not right now... but it is possible and it wouldn't be unheard of.

No that's not what I'm asking.

If you're eligible for an upgrade and choose to pay full retail to keep unlimited are you under a 2 year contract?

And now with my iPhone 5's unlocked sim.. I can go to AT&T or TMobile if I choose.. Consumerism at its best..

I don't pay full price just for unlimited data. I pay so I'm not locked in to any particular provider. The unlimited data is icing on the cake. If they change their business model and I'm not happy.. Goodbye and no etf. Glad you are happy with what you have.. That's all that is important.

That's even more silly than paying full price with the main intent of retaining unlimited data... Unless you fully 100% know and intend to change carriers within the next 20 months, you're still wasting money.

I can understand wanting/needing the flexibility to switch carriers if you have a job that dictates that you move a lot or if you like to travel, or if you're on a horrible carrier who may have spotty service.... but to pay a premium just so you can switch if you "don't like their business model" is crazy.

So what happens in 20 months when you are still on Verizon?

If you're eligible for an upgrade chances are your existing contract is either up or will be up soon.

So once your contract is up, you are no longer on a contract. You will be paying month-to-month for service. You can leave at any time and they can drop you or force you onto a contract at any time.

I'm pretty sure they could do the same thing even if you are under contract. However you could then leave without paying any etf. Credit card companies do it all the time. Raise you interest rate and give you the option to close you account without penalty. Keep paying at old rate but no new charges.

No, it's a waste of money. I don't need to justify my reasoning for going tiered to anyone, especially myself!. The numbers speak for themselves... Why would I continue to over pay for something I don't use? Like it or not, you ARE paying a $22.50/mo. PREMIUM to keep your unlimited data. You paid full price for your phone.

Hey, if going tiered is a better deal for you - do it and screw anyone who tells you otherwise. Cause what matters here is saving money and each user will have different usage and different reasons to go with one plan or another.

My usage and reason for keeping:

For me it looks to be 18.75 extra a month for 24 months if I pay full price ($450 extra over subsidized). Tack on the $30/mo extra I pay for tethering and you get another $720 for 2 years... total of $1170 that I paid specifically to tether over the two years.

Now consider I stopped paying for home internet - LTE is faster than what I got for $60/mo or $1440 for 2 years. Add in what I paid for the phone and tethering and I get a savings of $270 over two years. This is not including what I paid previously for traveling data.

With the hotspot I used to have, I paid $80/mo for unlimited 3G. Over two years I'd have paid $1920 for unlimited 3G. This is pure savings now.

My contract is good until the end of June next year. So I get a guaranteed 9 months of unlimited - after which who knows. So $540 in home internet saved ($60*9), $720 in mobile internet saved ($80*9), $270 spent on tethering (9*30) and the $450 for the phone.

Worst case, I save $540 if they cancel unlimited after my contract.
Best case, I save $2190 over two years if they don't.
Either way, I save.

if you use 30gigs a month, and have unlimited you are saving around $8,000 over two years compared to paying for tiered 30 gigs a month. Thats why.

True so in reality $52.50/month for unlimited. Now if you pay full price to retain unlimited do you still need a contract or are you month to month?

Considering Verizon now wants $50/month for 1GB that is even a great deal.

I bit the bullet and got a 16gb iPhone5 that i paid full price for. Have unlimited 4g + Unlimited 4g Hotspot + 450 minutes+ 1000sms plus warranty.. paying around $116.. and i managed to add a work discount now that will make it change form 13% to 22%.. i am a happy camper.

Apple iMessage saved me $10 bux since most of my friends have iphones. I am around Day 18 of 30 for my billing cycle.. already pushing past 4gb with "light" usage.... tethering when i have it in the car so my friends onboard can connect, facetime calls, streaming pandora. At work we have wifi (gonna be about 5mbps shared pipe for EVERYONE soon) and my 4g signal is crap (downtown NY). With the freedom towers completed soon... hopefully verizon will drop a few lte antennas there and i will be able to use my lte with sweet speeds from where i sit (17th floor) . Around the building in other sections i can easily pull 5-13mbps.

And since my tethering is unlimited... i will share with my peeps around me.

----------

The highest data usage i had was around 30gb when i had my htc thunderbolt and was at my old building (we moved last year). i had great LTE coverage. on a crap day id still get around 5mbps

I used my brother's upgrade today to get myself a iPhone 5 (he said he doesnt care, he is going to use the upgrade thats available next month) and i switched it to my line... And i lost unlimited data somehow so I called up saying I didnt change any plans or nothing and the VZW guy was like "yeah your right you should of never lost unlimited data" so he switched it back to unlimited for me and I still have unlimited 4G LTE !

I hate how people say it's an extra amount "each month" Like it's a hidden fee. I pay $23 a month for unlimited data right now. Every gigabyte over two, helps pay for the full retail price of the phone, that's $10 in our pockets.

The price of a full retail phone will pay for itself in a few short months While everyone who upgraded to a shared program, will be paying an extra $10/gb regardless. Most people think 2 is plenty, it's not. It's proven that we use our phones 95% of the time not for phone calls.

Unlimited LTE. no caps. No throttling. VZW.

For me, just as important is that if i move to one of the new shared data plans i will be paying about $20 more per month. That would only give me 2gb a month and i do not think that will be enough, so there would be overages

What's going to happen when Verizon decides to eliminate unlimited (or cap it like AT&T)?

Mass hysteria?

It will happen. And when it does all of the people who paid to "keep" unlimited will face the reality that there is no contract, and they're sol.

They'll threaten to sue, leave, cry, whatever...

But they won't have unlimited any more

VZW can't cap like AT&T as per FCC. However they can get rid of unlimted.

I currently use 1GB per month on 3G with Verizon. If I were to switch to an iPhone 5 with LTE, how much is my data likely to increase if I keep the same data habits?

Also, with my data habits, is it worth it for me to pay for the phone full price to keep unlimited data? I pay $90 per month for unlimited. If I switch to a Share Everything plan, my bill will increase to $24 per month

Maybe? But... they won't have any issues capping their "new" plans.

Example: "We are sorry Mr. JustPaidTooMuchForAFeatureWeDon'tWantYouToHave, but due to network limitations we are no longer offering the Unlimited data package. However, because we care SO much, we are offering all former users of that plan a 5GB+ Edge (for free, all you can eat) for the same low low price. Congrats! V"

If you're trying to say they cannot arbitrarily cap an "unlimited" plan fine, but AT&T showed the telcom world an easy way to basically do the same thing.

Enjoy it while you have it. Being throttled sucks. It will happen eventually once their metrics say losing you as a customer is worth it (and that should be soon thanks to their shared plans).

And LOL to "not wanting to be on contract". All you did was pre-pay it...

I dont see it that way, my plan doesn't change. I just paid up front what I would of say if I decided to cancel and pay the ETF. While I realize that isn't the same comparison, I just see it as I could afford the device up front, while my monthly stays the same and my data is un-hinged.

Thats the issue. You're still paying a lot more to keep the unlimited data.

If your contract actually went down like it should when you buy the phone at retail, then that'd be something to be happy about.

the fact of the matter is, those of us that paid to keep unlimited while all you guys who gave it up, are in a better position. whats the point of buying an LTE device to keep it on wi-fi the whole time? what a waste. To pay the same, or even more if you go over, for something you had unlimited before makes ZERO sense. I guess those people will do anything to save a buck.

Not me, I am paying less by keeping my unlimited even with the $1,000. + price of the phone, over two years I will save $7,000.00 (actually its 8,000 - the 1,000. phone) So its a HUGE savings to pay cash for the phone. HUGE!

EXACTLY. right now, with my data usage, i have pocketed $70 extra bucks by having unlimited data and not shared. the price of my phone is already paying for itself.

The people who keep unlimited and use 2GB/mo end up paying more - sure. The rest of us who actually use the unlimited plan like it was originally meant to be - unlimited - save a hell of a lot of money.

I'm with AT&T and have grandfathered unlimited on 4 lines. Honestly I understand the need for some kind of throttling.

According to FCC VZW can't cap an unlimited plan like AT&T does, I could be wrong.

You must be really patient if you use 1 GB on 3G. Do whatever it takes to keep your unlimited. You will use a hell of a lot more.

Since vzw 3g is so slow 1 gb is actually a lot. Expect to use at least 10 gb month on lte. So yes keep unlimited
