Don't forget the $30 "setup" fee. It is waived for the Edge plan.
That brings 2 year contract up to $1,790 vs $1,970 EDGE. So contract is still slightly cheaper. Mind, I think a lot of corporate discount subscribers can have that fee waived.

There are certainly cases where EDGE and NEXT are better. This isn't one of them.

You only make calls or people only call you when you're near wifi?
It's a dealbreaker for many no matter what excuses people make for verizon.
No, I said I'm on WiFi 90% of the time so I can talk and surf the web then if I need to. That 10% of the time when I'm on LTE won't stop me from getting Verizon. Not sure why that was hard to understand.

No, it doesn't make the two equal, but it shouldn't be ignored either. Plus, there is just something liberating about the idea of not having a contract.

Oh and FYI, I wasn't able to have the fee waived with my corporate discount.

The idea, sure. If that gives you peace of mind, go for it.

I prefer to look at hard numbers. No matter what time you cancel, the iPhone will cost you $580 ($550 if you can get the setup fee waived) on the 2-year contract and it's going to be factory unlocked no matter what financing method you choose. Remember, you still need to pay off the EDGE installments if you want to switch carriers (and that's bound to cost more than the ETF). Really, the only benefit of EDGE in this case is that you don't have to pay a "deposit".

I dont know if that's a good thing that you're within feet from wifi most of your time.
Others go out and do stuff and have more active lives I guess. And those who work on the road that limitation is huge if they need to hang up the phone to do anything else with their phone.

This might be a little off topic, but right now I'm on a family plan for 2 paying around $160 a month for 2GB and unlimited talk and text. Wouldn't it be a no brainer for me to switch to two single lines plans for more data and less $?

I normally use 3-4 GB of data per month, so the overages on this plan would bump the price into a different tier.

One thing that all these new plans have in common is unlimited voice minutes. For someone like me, who generally uses less than 100 minutes per month, that's a waste. I'd like to see someone try out an unlimited data plan with low voice minutes.

I know the voice network is already built out and a low cost asset, but I think that would fit a very large cross-section of use cases.

Well, not quite no matter when, as each month you are on it you are also paying $10 more as well.

(Aside from that not sure how taxes might figure in, as in some places they might be the same with eithe option, while in other places one might potentially have more taxes than another.)

LOL, sorry that I work in an office with WiFi (40-50 hours per week) and when I go to the gym there is WiFi there as well and I guess I should also apologize that I have WiFi at home too. I'll have to speak with the manager of the coffee shop I frequent about getting rid of their WiFi there as well. ;)

Man, I wish my life was as great as yours

Yes (if) that plan includes all fees and taxes at that price, otherwise two lines with two sets of fees & taxes might add up to the same $160 (give or take a few $)

Every month of service costs you an extra $10 but keep in mind ETF goes down $10 so they pretty much cancel out. I did my math before I made that statement. :p Tax on the extra $10 will likely cost an additional $1/month at most.

You are not even on verizon lol. I know you may not believe it, but there are those of is who don't care about simultaneous voice and data. If you absolutely require it, get a handset and/or carrier that provides that functionality.

News of the $60 a month plan for Verizon just about secures my jump from AT&T to Verizon. My AT&T contract expires September 14th. Should be perfect timing to get an iPhone 6 with VZ at that time. Plus I'll be saving $20 a month for the same plan versus signing a new contract with AT&T. AND the Verizon iPhone 6 will be SIM unlocked for my travels to Italy.

You are right about the ETF, forgot about that.

As for taxes, I meant that more on the phone itself. Sometimes in some places it's on the full price of it even if it's subsidized and sometimes in some places it's on the subsidized price or maybe installments. It might play a role for someone potentially, but hard to say for sure or how much of a role exactly.

Pssst! Over here! Shhh! Walmart offers just such a plan through TMobile prepaid. 5gb data before throttling, unlimited texts, 100 voice minutes for $30. You didn't hear it from me though!

Does anybody know if you MUST be on Verizon Edge to get the discounted $50/mo price or is Bring Your Own Device also gets the discounted $50/mo?

I stopped by VZW today... In order to get the $50 price you have to get on their Edge program. You can bring your own device and still get the single line for $60/mo though.

Interesting. Too bad they won't give that same discount to owned (non-contract/Edge devices).

You didn't by any chance ask about employee discounts in relation to the new plan as well, did you?

Already have that plan!

But, I think the concept behind it is very sound -- trade out the unlimited voice minutes for a larger data allowance.

If AT&T or even Verizon had a low minutes plan with extra data, I would consider it, even if it cost more or had a lower data allowance than T-Mobile's plan. The T-Mobile plan is nice and suits my needs. But, because of AT&T and Verizon's larger network coverage, I would be open to switching if they offered that type of plan.

No sorry, I did not. I did find out that just because the deal is supposed to run through 9/30/14, it can be pulled earlier... like before iPhone 6 launch.

And if they had better signal where I worked, I would gladly switch. As it is, the slight savings just isn't worth the marginal signal, extremely high latency, and less than 1Mbps throughput.

I went to Verizon with my employee FAN info and I was told you can not use it on their single line plans. I don't understand why since AT&T allows it on every one of their plans except the 300MB data plan.

Weird. I bit the bullet last night and went and signed up for service with Verizon. I signed up for the single line plan for $60/mo. Walked out with the Galaxy S5 for $100! I figure if the iPhone 6 is a killer I'll be able to sell the S5 for at least $400 and I'll pay for the rest.

Most of the folks at VZW that I talked to think the single line plan will get pulled before the iPhone's release anyway FWIW.
