To expand on that, public betas are the best way to find and resolve problems.

Indeed. I can't help but think that some of the numerous bugs
in Leopard could have been avoided if it had been tested in
this way.

I have windows 7 running on my mac pro and all id fine acually it is great. Much better than Vista. One question I can only get sound from the internal speaker or headphones. How can I get sound from the rear panel?

I'm running Win7 x64 in a Fusion VM. So far it's great. I'm debating whether or not to try it in bootcamp, I don't really want to mess up my installed games since they're all using DRM.

Make a backup with winclone. Then if you don't like it just reload the backup

Seeing as how the public beta is free, whether or not you submit problems is your prerogative - but, it's a beta, so don't expect it to be problem free

Not running it on a Mac Pro (running it on my desktop, which is a beefy enthusiast's machine) and Win 7 x64 is amazingly fast and snappy. XP can finally be laid to rest imo

I'm running it on my Mac Pro, and I have it set to use about 4 gigs of RAM, so it's quite fast.

I'm just really disappointed that they kept the Vista look and feel. I had such a bad experience with Vista (it's what made me switch to a Mac in the first place), that I already have a bad feeling about it.

Windows really needs to do something similar to OS X and build the OS on top of a version of *NIX to give it better stability and security.

I tried x64 in Fusion, and everything worked great until I tried opening any game. At that point it was all downhill, causing my VM to become unresponsive (I could move the mouse and click the Fusion menu, but could not interact with any window or button on the virtual machine). I restarted the VM several times and tried different games, all with the same results.

Everything else I tried worked really well, though.

May be, I suspect Windows 7 is actually the same thing as the Beta Service Pack 2 for Vista that's available for developers. I mean, everyone knows that windows 7 is Vista right?

No (if you are serious). I have SP2 and it is different in several
respects to Windows 7. That said, I don't find the differences
between Windows 7 and Vista to be nearly as great as some
people claim. I believe there is an enormous placebo effect here.

Hi, i've got same issues, with same mac pro.. i've read something about solving this problem, but the procedure requires a working Windows installation http://www.jowie.com/blog/post/2008...t-from-Vista-x64-DVD-burnt-from-iso-file.aspx

Is there any other way to fix the iso using OsX ?

thanx in advice

There may be another way. In the past it was possible to install
Vista from a hard disk. The process sounds quite simple:

(1) Create a small FAT partition for the install DVD's contents.
(2) Make the partition active.
(3) Mount the DVD and copy its contents to the partition.
(4) Boot off the partition (the installer will run).

When I get a chance, I will try this and see if it works.

Having what I think is the same issue... I have installled the bootcamp 2.1 drivers and all devices are fine... but no sound. Well, not entirely no sound but VERY VERY low sound output from the back. I can hear it if I crank the speakers and mixer all the way up, but it's faint. Strange....

Sounds like a voyage to Realtek's website is in order ;p

It is better than Vista, there are a lot of tangible improvements (boot time, memory usage, etc). Anyone who skipped Vista because of they didn't like it for all the usual "reasons" is uninformed.

Just did exactly that... Vista_R214.exe fixed the issue. I guess I'll go grab the latest x64 nvidia drivers as well.

Looking good so far, I'm not tasting that small amount of vomit in the back of my throat that I got over Vista... ;)

I have sound but only from the internal speaker or headphone jack. I can not get sound to my speakers that are pluged into the back. I have the same problem with XP. But with XP if I unplug the speakers wait a minute and plug the cable back in it will see the speakers. Not with windows 7.

I had the same problem. I think this is a VMWare tools issue, specifically the graphics driver. I notice that in addition to games such as chess locking up the system since I loaded the VMWare tools, I now get some graphics corruption on boot up prior to the login screen (which didn't happen prior to VMWare tools installation). I think we will need to wait for VMWare to make a new graphics driver available in order to fix these issues.

Just installed Windows 7 all was working well for the first few seconds with graphic effects on, then I looked at the display panel for the monitor and I magically lost my graphics card driver for my 3870.

Tried to get windows to reinstall it, but it failed, tried to install the new ATI windows 7 beta drivers and it failed.

Now trying to install the drivers on the disc that came with my 3870 Mac & PC edition, but for some reason it is taking forever.

Windows seems just a crappy as ever, I already restarted my computer at least 10 times in one hour.

Glad I was only messing around with Windows 7 not actually planning on using it for anything.

But any help with the 3870 Driver problem would be great. :D

Firstly, lets get that I loathe everyhing to do with Windows out of the water.

I downloaded the Beta from Microsoft themselves, and have already left quite critical feedback.

The only thing I like in 7 is the boot times, they are fantastic. I was only messing around, but it is snappier. I will be upgrading to 7 from torrent for Boot Camp only.

Not on a macpro, but downloading now for my mbp and desktop. Kind of confused on how to use it for bootcamp, but haven't looked.

Microsoft already is. They do have to consider all those existing Windows users though, all those applications, all those services. It won't just happen in one release.

Trying reinstall the stuff makes the ATI program freeze, it's been stuck on the Analyzing System/ Analyzing Configuration screen for what seems to be hours.

GOD I hate F**King Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I am gonna say screw it, and never use Windows on my own home computer ever again.

WOuldn't that be like completely starting from scratch though? Rendering Millions of applications useless - would have to completely rewrite or at least recompile and debug every app ever written for windows?

It did work :)

So you can run the installer off a partition instead of the DVD.

32 bit on my mac pro

I started d/l the 32 and 64 bit versions last night. 32 bit finished fort, so i created a new Fusion VM directly from the ISO. Installation was quicker than any other version of windows ever.

I installed Firefox with no problem. I ran PCPITSTOP under IE, rated great in everything but 2D graphics performance (no real surprise there).

64 bit should be done by the time I get home tonight, will fire it up as well.

But I've noticed the more I use my pro the more mac apps I run and fewer and fewer windows. I guess that's the best news of all.

I'm also having the "select a CD ... 1, 2" issue. The Windows 7 disc burned just fine (I got the .ISO from the Microsoft site after the servers exploded), and I threw it into the Mac Pro. Bootcamp recognized it as a Windows disc (good!), partitioned the drive (good!), but when I went to install it on boot, that's when I got the issue. The keyboard was unresponsive, etc... I had to manually power down to get it off of there. :(

So from there I just said "f* it" and tossed it into VMWare Fusion. I would like to Bootcamp the sucker so I can truly see the "speed" of the OS, so I'll try installing from a partition like Infrared suggested earlier. ;)
