Im not doubting your careless handling of your laptops. Im just saying aluminum is stronger than plastic.
Why are car bodies not made of your "high impact plastic" if its so much stronger than metal?? I could go on with thousands of examples of metal being stronger.
You like your laptop, thats all that matters! You dont have to try to justify yours being better than someone elses aluminum macbook. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but it is a FACT metal is stronger than plastic.
He never said that plastic was stronger, only more durable. Stronger does not equal durable.

Im not trying to insult you at all. If your computer works better for you then thats all that matters. Im happy with mine, your happy with yours. That is ALL that matters!

Using such phrases as, "I'm not doubting your careless handling of your laptops" is hardly complimentary. I'd say that's pretty much verging on an insult. As if I deliberately set out to have something happen to them. They travel in neoprene Incase sleeves and padded laptop bags, but that can't protect them from everything. Things can happen once you pull them out of those protective layers, and when you are constantly on the go with them, things do happen.

And for fiberglass, now your throwing 3 elements into the mix. Fiberglass has nothing to do with this. it was metal vs plastic.

OK- car bumpers are plastic.

There's nothing better than reading amusing postings like these at work when I don't feel like working :D

Now back to the original question from the OP - Anyone think the white macbook will discontinue? Look at the entire line of current Mac computers, the old MB is the only one left that's not based on aluminum. What does that tell you?

I think the same thing when reading your posts at work. :D

Hilarious.

I thought bumpers on most cars are made from high impact plastic? Also, the the front and rear of a car is designed to crumple in order to mitigate the force delivered to the passenger carriage. I think both sections are made from alloy/steel (some metal composite thing), but obviously to different specifications. What did you just learn by reading this? That different metals are designed to do different things, and that I clearly don't know enough about car design to comment, despite making a comment.

Feel free to ignore my future posts.

Yes, it will get replaced once Apple has gotten the price of the aluminum ones down so it can be $1099.

In my above post im not saying one is better than the other. I dont want it to turn into that. Im just saying that anyone knows metal is stronger than plastic.

The problem is, the aluminum ones are made out of glass, there have been several problems already reported where the glass has cracked from rather small falls.

Anyway, they'll probably lower the 2.0 MB to $1099.

Or when Apple burns through all the extra white macbooks they got laying around ;)

Funny since they are still buying the parts to manufacture them.

They will retire the white ones sometime in the near future, but it is not true they aren't manufacturing new white ones right now and just selling old stock.

I think it'll carry on until after at least the next revision. They'll probably bump it to the 2.4ghz model of the previous generation of macbooks. It'll be eol'd probably when the unibody macbook comes down enough in price.

Shame that they got rid of the black macbook though.

I don't understand how everyone drops their MB so much. I place my MBA in an Incase, and from there I place it in my backpack, thus insuring its almost impossible to drop. Maybe I am just super careful with it, since it costs so much money lol.

I was a little surprised that apple kept the white macbook somewhat alive after the aluminum update. Does anyone think that at Macworld, or within a few months after, we will likely see apple replacing it with an aluminum macbook?
On one side I am fairly sure that Apple will replace it at the next update in the Spring, but on the other hand, I have this feeling that the white MacBook will stay for a year or so.

Spec-wise, the white MacBook's not terrible. The 2.1 GHz CPU is actually faster numerically than the $1299 MacBook's 2.0 GHz, and the RAM and HD can be upgraded as time goes on. Other things like the (lack of) glass trackpad are downsides to this model, although if Apple goes this way they'll just de-emphasize those features. It'll most likely be discontinued with the switch to Nehalem.

iBook G4- dropped 9 times from various heights in the four years I owned it. The only thing that it got was a slight crack on one corner, and that was after the ninth drop. Sorry, aluminum can't take that kind of abuse, neither can glass.

You shouldn't drop your Macbook, aluminum or plastic, anyway :p.

I thought they kept the white MacBook to
A. get the low price point (considering how expensive the unibody models are)
B. Still give people the option of firewire.
C. Not make a stupid move (the white macbook was apples best selling computer for the last year yes?)

But yeah, they will get discontinued, eventually, only time will tell though.

not sure if this is a point
the white plastic macbook contributes largely to apple's wastes ( they were once named the most environment un-friendly company )

the new alu macbook is to stop that nonsense ( cut down the waste )

thats 1 point i figured out why they are replacing plastic with expensive unibody

but wad the heck .. the alu macbook is rad~

I hope that apple keeps the whitebook, and maybe bring back the blackbook too.

Maybe in a cheaper and smaller package. I think a lot of users would appreciate a cheaper "netbook" version of a macbook. Something small, with a 9" screen, priced at around < $900.

Like someone once said, "All good things must come to an end...". I like the polycarbonate better. I just like the look of it. Aluminum's cool, don't get me wrong, but I will not shell out another 1.6K (either the backlit keyboard or not at all) when mine is perfectly fine, apart from normal signs of usage. I think Apple will keep the white macbook, and possible the black, but turn them into netbooks. Someone said that before, and I very much agree. Aluminum for a netbook is way to costly and overkill.

I had to buy a laptop for school last week and I passed on the aluminum Macbook. Future Shop was clearing out the old Macbooks and I got a brand new 2.4 GHz whitebook for $1099. Cost wasn't really a factor to me even though I saved $650 by not going for the 2.4 Ghz Glassbook.

I need to use my laptop for school so it's going to spend a lot of time jostling around a backpack with 50 lb Anatomy books (ok, I'm exaggerating, but they're huge!). When someone says the plastic Macbooks are more durable They mean they can take a hard bump better than a Glassbook.

Aluminum is stronger than plastic and therein lies its weakness. When you bump one of those suckers, there is no give and every component inside feels it. Plus the wireless reception is better because there is no metal to interfere with the signal. I have an iMac at home so what I need out of a laptop is performance on the road, and the whitebooks have it.

To top it all off, that $650 sitting in the bank earning interest plus the resale value of the whitebook = brand new Macbook a year or two down the line. For free. Can't beat that.

Just hang on guys! the marketplace in the new year will force them to get in the real world, and bring their prices more in line other companies

Guess you're not familiar with Euro car makers who have used a number of plastic panels for many years - especially in French cars. I had a Citroen that had plastic bonnet & tailgate, side (C) pillars and a number of other areas too.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but it is a FACT metal is stronger than plastic.

Sorry but this is poo - yes in many/most cases plastic would be stronger but it all depends on application, thickness, design etc. especially if we're talking light-weight, thin aluminium. We’re not talking about steel here . . .

:p
