Sounds like a really poor marketing choice calling it the G1. Some dumb people look at the numbers and will see G1 or G3. Then get the bigger digit. Believe it or not. Hence Xbox 360 vs PS3, rather than Xbox 2 vs PS3.

Meh, I would get it but the Mac seamlessness is why i got the iPhone.

All HTC phones don't have 3.5mm jacks. In fact I'd be surprised if it had one.

I think it's a good phone for what it does and my GF needs a new phone this November so I'll push the G1 on her... though she doesn't want an internet plan. Maybe that'll work, maybe not.

UGLY UI
UGLY PHONE
1GB DATA CAP? (T-mobile)

hahhhahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa:D:D:D

Yeah I'll switch to g1 alright.... hahaaha funny...

last month I used over 4GB data listening internet radio (over 128K streams)

Android my azz...:apple:

The android thing is a tad underwhelming and it wouldn't make sense to swap out as I am under contract for well over a year.

what's the compelling reason?
there's no installed customer/user base.
No desktop application to sync
Tied to Google webmail, meh!

who will buy it ?
a few "freetards" perhaps, but how many "freetards" will cop a 24mth plan and $179 upfront? nah.

too little, too late.

:)

there will be a G1 Touch later on, I suppose. But before that, they have to have a good mp3 player and good desktop integration.

BTW, if what was promised a while back still holds, there will be many Android based phones on most, if not all, of the cellular networks.

I'm not concerned too much by the G1, I'm more interested in Android, and whether it'll become the 3DO of the mobile world or not.

How long before we see Android ported to jailbroken iPhones?
Anyone interested in working on this project?

I'm going to wait first and see what this OS is like, and if we would even want it on our iPhones. When it comes out, and we get a chance to demo it, then we'll know. :)

I'd like to see some of the apps/functions that Android has ported over to the iPhone. Hopefully without jailbreaking.

Good thinking. :)

That was Google's original plan, but then they ran into a lot of problems and realized that every different handset is different enough, that the OS literally has to be designed differently for each different phone. Google publicly revised their goals earlier this year and said that they were going to focus on just one phone for now and get at least one of them out on the market. That phone is this new G1. Other models of phones using Android have to have Android custom taylored to that different phone, and will not be available until "sometime in 2009" according to Google's statements. (which can be found all over the internet)

- no built in video player
- 1gb download limit
- no "killer app"
- no 3.5mm audio jack
- Web browsing looked much choppier when compared to Safari Mobile

admittedly i love that its open source

Much like my iPhone 3G, I will wait until the second iteration of "Google phones" before deciding to switch.

i will push my girlfriend to get it even though theres no tmobile 3g in hawaii. G1/Android seems interesting.
there are some days i get bored with my iphone :(

ehh. It just seems like another iphone ripoff. Only reason this ones getting light is because it's by google. If this same phone was made by like nokia, then it would have less hype.

I couldn't agree more. If a Google employee takes a dump, the tech news places are all over it. If 2 Google employees take a dump, the mainstream press covers it. I have seen nothing really compelling about the OS (the name, to start with) and really know nothing about it aside from it's open source. Woo frickin' hoo. People have been playing that card about Linux forever without much to really show for it.

The device itself is definitely a major uggo. It looks like a Palm Pilot from about 1998. The UI looks like another iPhone ripoff (wow...4 rows and 4 columns of icons?). It DOESN'T COME WITH A VIDEO PLAYER and has just A 1GB MicroSD card? This costs $179?

All that being said, I can see a group of folks just as crazy as the early iPhone adopters and rushing out to buy a completely brand new product. There will be early glitches and a whole lotta complaining, just like with every other new product. The good thing for the G1 (another lame name) is it's just $179. However, it sounds like an overpowered PDA more than some iPhone killer.

HTC totally FUBARed this one. That it was ugly looking phone. It looks more like a no-name beta testing device/calculator/fisher price walkey talkey type...thing. Looks aside the interface doesn't seem as fluid either...looks somewhat unpolished, no 3.5mm Jack, no video recording/flash, 1GB data cap etc. Sooo...why would i trade this for an iPhone?

Android is promising, just didn't and will not fulfill the promise with this phone. T-mobile's 3g is not everywhere, so why isn't wifi on this device? That makes no sense what so ever IMO. I live in NY/NJ so it won't matter to me, but still!

No desktop sync? This is Google's fault. I understand all your contacts, email, docs and more are store on Gmail, but suppose you don't have internet access? (Power outage, no battery left on your cell and of course no internet.)

Touchscreen... I can tell from the Youtube videos that it's no where near as responsive to the iPhone. 2 or 3 tries is not cute what so ever. This would have me throwing a phone to the wall. I got used to Multi-touch.

Email... is it going to be rich like the iPhone's? Is it going to look like my PC?

I haven't seen the SMS app. Is it threaded? If so, is it real like iPhone/Treo or fake like the Blackberry?

Browsers... this will never be a contest at least not for a long time.

There is a lot more, but let me end it here. Google why T-mobile?

I don't think I'll ditch my iPhone, but since I'm using an iPhone (EDGE) unlocked on T-Mobile, and I really like T-Mobile, I might call them at some point, do the usual biennial call-them-and-whine to ask for better contract terms / perks and the new user discount on the G1 in exchange for re-upping on contract. And then I could play with the G1 and sell it. (Or equally likely do the same with the next variant of the Android -- the G1 is nice but there are some things I find quite annoying about it and suspect they'll fix rapidly, like it only coming with 1GB of built-in memory despite it's significant price tag).

P.S. If anyone else tries this with success, please give me guidance. :D Usually they're very good about this, but I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait before they'll give me better contract monthly fee perks and the Google phone at the new user price.

There is Wi-Fi, but no UMA for some odd reason.
