For those with issues I worked out how to get from the first GM to final Mavericks direct from the App Store without a second Mac/friend/etc.

1. Launch the App Store app

2. While it’s running, edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

3. Change the version numbers to 10.8 for both and save.

4. Switch back to App Store, click on the big Mavericks Banner and it should say “Free Upgrade” rather than "Install". Click on it and it’ll ask for your Apple ID and associate it to your account. Now it should show up in your Purchase History, etc.

5. Now you've "bought" it, you can change your version numbers back to 10.9. Quit and relaunch App Store.

Make sure you launch the App Store first though. If you change your version number first it'll refuse to launch.

Thanks, this worked for me. But I had to logout and login before step 4.

End of the issue for me, buying Mavericks from another computer made the trick, now running 13A603

Oh holy cow kawa bunga, thanks holy frumpsnake, that worked!

You've got to change the permissions to "read & write" for yourself.

I am now the owner and it is clearly unlocked but text pad says it is still locked.

Early morning goof i did not also unlock the folder it was in

Instead of editing permissions you can also just run sudo nano /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist in Terminal, make the changes, and hit Ctrl-O to save.

Hmm odd, it's downloaded 19MB only since last post.. Dial up speeds. Also I can't open safari, crashing every time.. Have had to post this on the iPad..

I changed access back to read only on core services and system version p.list - could the 10.8 version number in the p.list file be causing a crash?

Yes, change it back and it will open without crashing. I had the same issue until I changed it back.

thanks

Was on GM1. Mavericks in appstore came up showing 'Free upgrade'. Clicking this presented me with a dialogue box saying something along the lines of:

"10.9 is already installed on this machine, do you want to download the installer instead?"

Said yes and 5.9Gb later there was an 'Install Mavericks' icon in my application folder.

Ran this app, it restarted the machine went through the motions of installing mavericks. About 20-30mins later I was back up and running, everything as it was but now with GM2 (603) installed.

All very smooth - no issues. If you have GM1, go for it!

Changing the plist file worked, thanks.

Does anyone know what would happen if I closed my macbook lid while mavericks was installing?

Used that little trick to update through the App Store, everything went smoothly and my sound issue with Quicktime even went away so that was nice. :)

Only one thing went wrong and it's that the App Store still doesn't recognize that I'm already on Mavericks. When I was downloading it, it finished but said there was an error downloading it and that I would have to retry. But the installer was in my App folder so I ran it without trouble. So now the App Store is still showing the "Download" button instead of "Installed". Oh well not a big deal

This worked for me:

Close App Store, remove your installer application for the Mavericks GM from your Applications folder. Open App store, and everything worked for me. Maybe this will help some people, maybe not.

When I try this, I still get the "download" button instead of "Free Upgrade" and it asks me to sign in but the email address isn't mine and it can't be changed.

Then it sounds like you had a tainted install source originally. Are you able to sign out of the Store and then sign back in?
