Didnt need any fun and games here. Gm1 went straight to app store and viola - search mavericks and download/install worked perfect.
Yeah same here.

For those with issues I worked out how to get from the first GM to final Mavericks direct from the App Store without a second Mac/friend/etc.
1. Launch the App Store app
2. While its running, edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
3. Change the version numbers to 10.8 for both and save.
4. Switch back to App Store, click on the big Mavericks Banner and it should say Free Upgrade rather than "Install". Click on it and itll ask for your Apple ID and associate it to your account. Now it should show up in your Purchase History, etc.
5. Now you've "bought" it, you can change your version numbers back to 10.9. Quit and relaunch App Store.
Make sure you launch the App Store first though. If you change your version number first it'll refuse to launch.
Thanks, this worked for me. But I had to logout and login before step 4.

how are you making the version editable it is locked
You've got to change the permissions to "read & write" for yourself.
If you were running GM1 then how did you see the "Free upgrade" button to begin with?
I am now the owner and it is clearly unlocked but text pad says it is still locked
I changed access back to read only on core services and system version p.list - could the 10.8 version number in the p.list file be causing a crash?
Yes, change it back and it will open without crashing. I had the same issue until I changed it back.

Instead of editing permissions you can also just run sudo nano /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist in Terminal, make the changes, and hit Ctrl-O to save.
This solved for me too. Signed out, clicked download, clicked "Continue", entered ID/password and it started downloading to Launchpad.
I spoke too soon - it didn't download the Mavericks installer, it downloaded the Xcode installer.![]()

When I try this, I still get the "download" button instead of "Free Upgrade" and it asks me to sign in but the email address isn't mine and it can't be changed.
