I am, sort of. I had a 16in 2.3/32/1tb/5500m 4gb, which I gave away to another employee in early September when her 15 died. I could have easily purchased a replacement at that time, but i didn’t want to so close to the expected release of AS. I “limped” along with a company spare 2015 2.2/16/256gb integrated graphics model plus my 2018 IPP. I would have much preferred a 16 inch but I can’t wait any longer at this point. I expect we will need to replace another computer or two by the summer so I should be able to hand down this new AS 13 pro.

The M1 chipset is entry-level to replace Macbook Air/Low-end 13" Pro models.
If I were you then I'd wait until Apple introduces the M10 chipset that will replace the High-end Intel Macbook Pro 13" and Low-end Intel Macbook Pro 16". You'd be downgrading from a high-end pro to a low-end pro if you were to switch to the M1 one and you'll be disappointed once the M10 chipset ones get released.

That's not going to happen.

Intel is late to deliver again, and there is no upgrade path available for the Core i9 in the 16" yet. Based on current estimates, even if Apple wants to silently update the 16", they'll have to wait until February or March next year.

So you are looking at 4-5 months out.

If you need a 16" now, buy now.
Better yet get a refurbished model for $900-$1200 off. You can get the i9 16" MacBook Pro refurbish models at Microcenter for $1899. Amazing deal, I got my 6 core for $1499 and its just like brand new and flawless!

Wait for benchmarks and reviews people! These are transition products. Reminds of when the first Intel MacBook Pro's came out with the PowerBook shells. I'm waiting to see what they can really do with the form factor on the new architecture.

Not planning on abusing the generous Apple return policy but if it sucks, and I don't think it will, it can simply be returned until January 8th, 2021! If it's not fast enough, return it. If Rosetta 2 isn't adequate, return it.

Would be happy to do that - in my country the base 16 inch model still costs around 2300€ with education discount or as refurbished.

im in the market for a new MacBook (i currently have a 2015 15) it is still nice but starting to show its age. I really want a 16 inch but seeing the gains on the 13 I am having a hard time deciding. Ill probably go 16 for the power and the screen.

Not me.... after 6 years, I just upgrade my 2013 15" rMBP, for a brand new 2019 16"...
I hope it last at least the same as my old mac..

Going the same way too. Although I'm OK with getting 4 solid years. Then I'll see if I move to AS or abandon the ecosystem
It's a shame there was never an Intel Mac as reliable and all around good as the 2013-2015 years

I got a pretty common spec'd out MBP16" (i9, 32Gb, 1TB, 5500M) and am seriously considering replacing it with the new MBP13 w/ M1 and 16Gb ram and 1TB drive.

My reasoning is more for increased convenience with the 13" form factor. I feel the added performance of the M1 will make it an easier upgrade, plus i feel here on out Apple will be focusing their development efforts on their own silicon. Hopefully i dont lose much on the depreciation.

Anyone else thinking of 'upgrading'?
Nope. Too much of a backward slide for me.

Issues: Smaller screen. No Bootcamp. No eGPU. 1 Monitor.

Seems like many hate the 16. Not me. Solid performance. Multiple displays. Blissfully good sound....I'll keep my 16.

I have an Air, a 13 MBP 2019, 2011 MBP Retina, and the MBP. I dont complain about haul the 16. Maybe that because is replaced my workhouse 17 inch, but I have bigger things to worry about that 1/2 lb.

I might get another soon too. Before Intel is gone (even with their issues).

I'm typing this on a 13" MacBook Pro....that I might replace. I hate this thing with the crappy old keyboard. It's pretty fast too.But the keyboard. But I could not go to a 2 port system. Uggh.

I'll wait, I want a 16" better than the current ones and better than the M1 ones. Yesterday I've read that the Perallels team is working on a version for M1 chips and including M1 owners as testers. I dont buy the Intel 16 because I have the impression that it wil be outdatet soon and it will not be in the second hand market at a good price (to sale it). I bilieve that in the worst scenario I'll have my machine in a year from now, hopefully less (crossing fingers).

I purposely bought a 16" MBP i9 8 core with 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, 8GB 5500M GPU knowing that Apple Silicon macs would come out soon.

For now, and for the next few years, I'm happy to stick with Intel. I remember the first Intel macs, they were 32 bit Core Duo CPUs, shipped with Tiger, support dropped after Snow Leopard, lasted a grand total of 2 OS updates. For me to jump over to Apple Silicon, I'd need at least 12 High Performance Cores plus all those high efficiency cores, 64GB of RAM and GPU performance that would be way better than my 8GB 5500M GPU. It will probably take a few years, but I'm in no hurry. I'm really loving my Intel MacBook Pro right now as it's got all the power I want right now.

If I were going desktop, I'd pick up the iMac 27" with 10 core i9 plus the 5700XT GPU and load that beast with 128GB of RAM. That would be some power!

No, we purchased 2 16" MBP computers earlier this year because we specifically did not want the new Apple silicon based models. Parallels and Windows are still a requirement for me.

I love the 16', but will be selling it for the 13", as I normally travel for work and need something a bit smaller. Also interested in the M1 pro, having the ability to also use iPad apps. I will also sell my iPad Pro to reduce redundancy.

not a chance... but ill dive in for another 16" on the next generation. Im too old to do the 1st gen ever again.

good luck to anyone who does though

Definitely a downgrade though.
M1 graphics is better than 13" integrated graphics, but can it touch your 5500m??
Also I believe they were also comparing the M1 to the low end 8th gen 13" chip. Comparing that to the 16" i9, another downgrade to the M1.

Also depending on what software you use, you might be using the M1 on Rosetta which brings down performances even more.

And your going from 32gb ram to 16gb ram.

Huge downgrade is what it looks like to me.
If you didn't need the graphics card in your 16" and you would have been fine with a step above 8th gen intel integrated graphics then that's another story.
I thought the same but if those Geekbench scores are honest well its more on par with base Mac Pro!!! I'm waiting for another generation bump as I'm done with entry chipset changes. And I'd never go to a 13" not enough real estate for my eyes. Its one thing to go refresh and updated chip its another to do this.

It looks promising as hell but I do too much with my current 16" to get my feet wet working out kinks... and I love the Big Sur release its great face lift imo.

Re: BootCamp: My daughter, just 6 weeks ago, bought a new 13" Pro. She was informed that new Apple silicon devices were coming out. But, she wanted the BootCamp option. With so much software going to the web. Boot Camp may be losing some of its necessity.
Many of the business apps are not web based and many are Windows only. I can't leave intel any time soon

AS Macs do/will have native Parallels. I know people prefer Bootcamp, just saying the option to run Windows will still be there if it really came down to it. And i'd imagine the M1 chip should run it virtually just fine unless whatever you're using Windows for is extremely intensive maybe.

If the performance in parallels is good I might look at a gen 2 MBP 16 with Apple CPU sometime in 2021/22. As long as the games I play on the Mac work or are ported I'm ok. I have a gaming machine so it's not a significant issue. I just like my current single solution for the time I do travel.

I am in a similar boat but 2019 i9 15" with a GPU. My main work is editing D850 RAW files and large Sony RAW files in Capture One (I work part-time as a creative). But I like the portability of a "laptop" but when I need to crunch and do work, I don't want to use the laptop, but, rather, a laptop paired to a monitor..So the 15" is lost on me. I just need enough power to run a 27" 4K display and edit these RAW files, no video editing.

Maybe the 13 MBP or the Air would suffice? I also want to sell mine before it depreciates. Anyone thinking similarly? Thanks
