wow ... ive ever only used one at any given time ... even with a port expander i have used 2 to power the adapter ....

For example, one port for my monitor, another port for my eGPU and external monitor, and another to backup drive and one for my Yubikey token. I’m always one short when using my 2 port machine.

Do these new M1 systems support eGPU? If so, get one that has extra ports and internal SSD connector.

Tempted to go as low as possible with MBA and scale up with M1X or whatever.

I plan something similar. I ordered MBA (8-core GPU/16 GB RAM) and after it arrives, I will sell my 16 MBP as its value is still high before AS version is released. I will use M1 MBA as my main editing device. When they release MacBook Pro 14" or 16", I will sell MBA since it will still have warranty and probably won't have a successor yet, thus keeping its resale value high.

The M1's do not support eGPU. If you look at the apple websites on MBP or MM and view Tech Specs. You will see at the bottom for accessories the Intel version supports BlackMagic eGPU and the M1's, its not listed.

I have a failing 2016 MBP 15” (stage light, black screen after 85°, etc) so I need a new laptop. Can’t decide whether low speced M1 Air will be stopgap or to max out a M1 Pro to see if I can live with it. Screen size is the main issue, but I simply can’t wait.

I was holding out for a Apple Silicon 16" MBP but am now considering something similar. A lot of my side work is on hold, my 2013 15" MBP is aging and becoming more of a hassle/annoyance to use, and the M1 Macs are calling to me. The M1 Macbook Air or Macbook Pro 13" could easily hold me over till the Apple Silicon MBP 16" is out in 2021 or even possibly till the Gen 2 Macs in 2022 are out. I think the M1 Macs will have better resale value by then than my 2013 MBP will, so that's helping push me to getting a holdover M1 Mac now.

Well, so here's a few things that went through my head right before I placed an order for M1:

1. I have no idea when the 16" MacBook with Apple Silicon will come out. It can be next year, or it may be the year after.
2. I have no idea if the next 16" MacBook with Apple Silicon will be a redesign, or if it will basically be the current 16" MacBook, just with Apple Silicon. Oh, and complete with the "okay" (not amazing) LCD screen. My OLED TV has spoiled me.
3. I have no idea if Apple will introduce a late 2020 16" MacBook via press release. That will drop the value of my 2019 16" by a good amount for no reason at all.
4. I'm at home and I'll be able to dock the MacBook on to my 34" display, so either 13" or 16" screen makes no difference whatsoever.
5. I'm not too bothered by fan nose and heat from my 16", but it would be nice if my next computer is virtually silent.
6. If I get M1 now, then I can probably settle with this until the transition is well over, and there is a redesign with MiniLED or OLED screen or whatever, plus a more mature 3nm Apple Silicon chip. TSMC said 2nd half of 2022 for 3nm fabs. Also resale value won't have tanked as much as my 2019 16".

After that, I just went and placed the order for M1 MacBook Pro. The M1 MacBook exists now and is usable now. This mythical 16" MacBook with Apple Silicon doesn't exist... yet.

The M1 MacBook Air, low-end 13" M1 MacBook Pro, and M1 Mac mini are very tempting. Though If I had to hazard a guess, the next MacBooks from Apple are the 14" & 16" MacBook Pro with mini LED within the next 6 months. For some reason, the upper tier of Apple silicon MacBooks seems more imminent. The temptation from "upgrading" my 16" aside, I look across the way & see things like the Dell XPS with its thin bezels as something Apple will no doubt incorporate into new designs in the not-to-distant future.

may I ask where will you go to sell it? ebay? I'd like to do the same, but I suspect the hit is very large. Because of this, I'm having a hard time deciding what to do.

I was thinking the same, but how much money can I waste for it?
In my case I have no choice as my 2016 MBP 15" has a serious display issue. I am limping by at the moment waiting for M1 laptops to become available in this country. So tough to decide whether to skimp and survive for a bit on a low spec MBA, or to go all in on a MBP and see if I can work with it for a few years.

I live in Turkey. I am selling it on a local website 😬

Okay, I got mine. Reporting in:

1. This thing is pretty zippy. I don't feel like I'm missing the speed of the 16".
2. Screen real estate is a massive downgrade. I feel like I'm losing at least 1/3 of the screen real estate.
3. M1 works with my external monitor (LG 34WK95U). It's much better than the last 13" Pro.
4. Battery life is just as good as they say.
5. Performance is as good as they say.
6. But the screen real estate downgrade, though...

So right now, the lack of screen real estate is the biggest issue for me. Mic and speakers are also a tiny bit worse, but I don't mind that as much. Apple can't come out with the next 16" MacBook fast enough.

When people are talking about a theoretical 14/16" mini-LED model do we have any sense (based on Apple's rhythms with releasing gear) when that would be?

I always thought Apple released stuff in June?

I think there is no way that apple will release mbp 16” with silicon chip anytime soon, and the before cristmass surprise double that...
Imagine all the crying of the ppls who went the hype way and buying now the mbp13 to get the M1 and few months after apple will release the real pro 16” with better chip.
They would bitch apple like never before :)

I got a pretty common spec'd out MBP16" (i9, 32Gb, 1TB, 5500M) and am seriously considering replacing it with the new MBP13 w/ M1 and 16Gb ram and 1TB drive.

My reasoning is more for increased convenience with the 13" form factor. I feel the added performance of the M1 will make it an easier upgrade, plus i feel here on out Apple will be focusing their development efforts on their own silicon. Hopefully i dont lose much on the depreciation.

Anyone else thinking of 'upgrading'?
"Apple's focusing their development efforts on their own silicon" - that doesn't matter, because you would exchange _your_ MBP 16" with _today's_ MBP M1 13", so future development efforts won't help you. You won't get the 32GB, I assume you had a reason to buy that Mac with 32GB.

The current M1 is the low-end Mac. And 13" form factor is not convenient when you lose a lot of screen space. If your Mac breaks down, by all means replace it. But if it is working fine, I'd wait until the second generation with 8+4 cores at least. But that's just me, it's your money, not mine, that you are spending.

Issues: Smaller screen. No Bootcamp. No eGPU. 1 Monitor.
All of these are not "issues". They are either deal breakers, or they are totally irrelevant. For example "No Bootcamp". Most people don't care. For others it means they can't buy this Mac.

PS. I haven't heard anyone posting if you can use two monitors if the lid is closed. The graphics capabilities should be the same as the Mac mini, except that you are using one tiny monitor already out of the box.

Being limited to two ports on one side can be a bit of a hassle at times. I've used a Macbook (only 1 port) and a retina Air (2 ports on one side) and depending on the situation having to move system to accommodate the ports isn't so great. In addition to my 16" (i7/16/512/5300) MBP, I also have a 2018 13" MBP (i5/16/512) that I use for more portability and having the TB3 ports on both sides makes connecting on the go so much easier.
Anker has a very nice charging hub. You plug it into the wall and into the first USB-C port, so you get charging, and it has two USB-C ports, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, and some port that I can't remember right now.

Since the MBA has no fan, I think it won't get updated to 8+4 cores. The MBP 13" will, and the MacMini will. MBP 16" will probably never get the 4+4 chip but will go straight to 8+4 cores and 16 GPU cores.

I agree with the screen real estate
Got the MBA M1
First MacBook I've tried in awhile that runs cool while plugged into external monitor (much cooler even than 2020 MBP 13 which is already much cooler than my 2019 MBP 16 5500M)

Unfortunately MBP 16 prices are already going down hard and Apple's trade in price is very painful to bear....

So sell 16" and take a $1K hit just to get a lower-end machine that will also take a hit one year down the road?
I must be missing something.
