Anyone using the MBP just for web browsing, iTunes, and Word processing?

I use my MBP for mainly web surfing and email.. I also use it for iTunes and ripping movies for my iPods and photo storage. I could have gotten (actually I had) a MacBook but I definately prefer the Pro for the LED screen and keyboard.

I would have gladly gone the route of the 12" MBP if they had one, but having used the 15" screen for the last year or so theres no way I'd go backwards to something that small again.
 
I have both a mac pro and a macbook pro. The MBP is pretty much my web surfing machine only. I know it's overkill, but hey it's my money :p:D
 
I got a MacBook Pro yesterday and the only things that are going to be stressing it are Photoshop CS3, Lightroom and Handbrake. I could have settled for the power of the MacBook but I wanted a matte screen, something bigger than 13" and since I am coming from a PowerBook, I love the MacBook Pro keyboard. If Apple offered a 15" MacBook with a option for a matte screen then that would have been my choice.
 
i will be using my yet-to-come MBP only for WoW ( via Boot Camp ) and surfing and of course, my main software.. Maya :D
 
I basically use my MBP for web browsing, email, and for storing my music and photos. I sometimes use Photoshop also. Every so often, I run bootcamp and play some Call of Duty 4 or the Orange Box. If I didn't play games (even though I rarely do on my MBP) I would have gotten a MB instead.
 
If you're running Office you need a top of the line machine anyway. Microsoft allows no computing power to go to waste!
 
I bought the mbp for basic stuff, too. Web browsing, a bit of photo editing, word processing, e-mail, etc, - all of which can be done fine on the macbook. But I like the larger screen, the backlit keyboard, the design, etc. It was $400 more expensive at the time for me...well worth it.
 
If you still have it in three years, it won't be overkill anymore. However, you won't have needed another laptop, assuming it doesn't need major repairs at some point.

Good point! Exactly what I had in mind when I purchased my MBP. I'm keeping this baby for at least 3 years.

True true. It all comes down to a matter of choice and whether you've got the money or not and how obsessive you are with having the latest and the greatest. Long live all the :apple: "books".

I do a touch of audio, thanks to GarageBand. Processing power and RAM are very important to that application. Proof of that was watching my PB G4 struggle to mix down a song, while my G5 would mix down the same song in less than half the time.

Also, I spent too much money on numerous computers that were underpowered. Now that I've spent more money on more power, they are lasting me much longer. Better value for my money.
 
I do a lot of photoshop work on my powerbook. It's the same sleek design as the MBP and the price was about the same you paid yours. So maybe we should trade ?

I'm a former MacBook owner (1st gen, 1.33Ghz CD)...passed it on to my wife when I went over to Iraq. When I returned home, I was serious debating between a 15" MBP and a MB. I absolutely LOVE the MB styling, keyboard, and how "rugged" it feels compared to that thin aluminum of the MBP. I ended up going with the 15" MBP SOLELY so I could drive a 30" external display (gotta love 2560x1600).

Bottom line...I love the MBP when it is "docked" at home driving my big display. I can't stand it when I have to bring it with me. (whenever I need to get hands on it, I ALWAYS miss the MB)

I'm very curious to know why you'll be playing via BootCamp and not under OS X?

I always PLAN on keeping a new laptop 3 years. But I seem to always struggle to make it ONE year. :)

I like that attitude! It's like buying an Audi RS8 instead of a Prius! Yeah you'll get there either way, but when you need it, the Audi has it all: lots of power, lots of metal between you and the poor guy who's thinking about cutting you off, and probably about 20 air bags all while sitting in a Harmon Kardon concert hall audio system! If you can afford it, go with the Audi, even if it will be in the shop a little more often then the Prius. It's worth it every time!
 
I do. It's way overkill, but I was broke in college when my laptop went out, and my parents bought me a new one.. my dad didn't like the look for ht MB, hence the MBP.

Yep, that was one of my main reasons as well. Although I still haven't bought the monitor yet as I just find the portability allows me to work all over the house rather than stay in the office/study where my monitors are.

If the Macbooks could've supported the 30" then I seriously would've considered them although I probably would've found myself in one place more often with a monitor when working and only portable when doing things like web surfing. At the moment I get to work wherever I want thanks to the large 17" screen and more importantly the 1920x1200 screen easily outdoes the Macbook's 1280x800 which would make programming and work pretty damn uncomfortable.

The superior graphics card was also a factor, although more of a bonus really. I've hardly played any games on it even though I imagined myself going for LAN sessions all the time with my mates!

So, no 30" monitor (yet) and no regular gaming. If it wasn't for the higher resolution of the MBP (an extra 1.2MP) there'd be no reason for me to have it over the Macbook!

P.S. HAVE A MERRY :apple: CHRISTMAS EVERYONE !

EDIT: I forgot to say, I use my MBP for programming in Xcode, surfing in Safari, checking mail in Mail, trading Futures and occasional gaming. Even with my trading program I have a lot of spare processing power hanging around ...
 
Nope. I actually use my MBP for "Pro" stuff - encoding and rendering HD videos, intensive Photoshop and Illustrator work, as well as the processing of hundreds of high resolution images at a time in Photoshop Lightroom.

And aside from needed it to do all those above tasks with ease, the backlight keyboard really sealed the deal. :)

its not sold here

and besides, even if they have, the country which im living in right now, they won't sell WoW for macs, due to the limitation of Mac users here in Indonesia

WoW should come with both Mac OS and Windows version of it on the same disc. Unless they sell it differently in your place.

To Topic:
when I get one, will do pretty much that and some photoshop and gaming :D
 
Mine is used for

1. Webbrowsing
2. Photos
3. Emails
4. Unix based stuff (SSH remotely managing other servers i have )

itunes + movies are done my my Quad core Xp rig cause it's got the 5.1 card in it
