i have been using the apple socks for years...doing the same with the iphone 4.

stays in sock until i need it and then its naked!

I agree. Every case that I have ever used creates more damage than I would without the case. I got a bumper for my iPhone 4 and tons of dust and lint from my pocket accumulates under the silicon and will undoubtedly result it abrasive scratches to the metal and glass.

I never used a case on my first generation iPhone and it held up great. I used cases on my 3G and 3GS and they got all scratched. I am going to go caseless with the iPhone 4 and use the bumper only if I am drinking at the bar haha.

That was my experience as well with prior phones.

But I want something to protect the back of my phone simply because I'm picky about that stuff. The gaffer tape may be ugly but its on the backside of the phone. I never see it and don't care what others see when I'm holding it. When I hold the phone in my hand I don't see it. When I set it on a surface I don't see it. All I see is that great industrial design :)

I needed that push. I've been torn between using my bumper and going caseless. :)

I don't use a case, never have and never will. I've had my phone since launch day and have zero scratches or anything. Just dropped it for the first time on the bathroom floor (hit my foot first), and still nothing. I had the first gen, the 3G and now this one and have never had any (terrible) cosmetic issues. Knocking on wood....

I had an Incase Slider on my first 3GS. It did scratch the bezel up a bit, but, the rest of the phone was fine. Ended up getting that phone replaced under warranty for a different issue at which time I started using the Uncommon Capsule case. That case did not scratch the second phone up one bit.

This time, I think I'm just going with the Power Support Crystal films on the front and back along with a bumper. Had one on the screen of the 3GS and was very happy with the protection. Until they ship, I'm using the old film from my 3GS (which doesn't fit, but it's better than nothing) on the front. I left the wrapper that came with the iPhone 4 on the back (ugly).

Going without a case but am dying for my Wrapsol to get here. Not gonna be here till Thursday. I was going to get a bumper in the meantime but, no one has them and the opening at the bottom is to small for my car adaptor. So, that'd be a waste.

I'm using the plastic film that came on it till the Wrapsol shows up.

Just throw it in an Apple Sock when you are done using and you will be set. Cleans fingerprints as well :)

Just bought Apple socks. Didn't know they came in six colours. :)

A bit small for an iPhone 4 with a bumper on. Looks like "either or."

My plan was not to use a case.

The problem is my phone loses it's signal when I simply hold it the same way I've always held my phones. It's a hard habit to break. Especially since I have other phones so it's only the iPhone that has this defect. Thus I'm using a bumper. I see why Apple is the only source for this. I believe they knew the phone was defective so they created this as an extra source of profit first & to help the phone work second. In fairness to the customer Apple could price bumpers at $15, instead of $30, and still make fifteen times more than cost.

I haven't used a case on any of my iPhones since I got mine back in '07, and haven't had any issues with scratches or drops. I've been considering getting a bumper for this one though.

This is the problem, the bumper interferes with nearly all cases so it's one or the other. Based on my testing the bumper works best to patch the defective antenna.

I haven't had reception issues so far, but the bumper looks fairly nice to me. The only remaining question for me is, will the iPhone 4 get scratched easily on the back if it's kept in a jeans pocket? If so, I may need to buy a full case or a back side protector.

If one doesn't use the case, will the iPhone scratch? I'm really careful with my phones, and even my 3GS has scuffs on the top bezel somehow. Also the Apple logo has light scratches.

Assuming one doesn't throw their phone around, would the iPhone 4 get scratches when put on a flat surface and slides around a bit? It seems the iPhone 4 is way more fragile than the 3GS which gets me worried.

Cases eliminate the joy of the design for me. I'd rather have a few scratches after one year of use than mar the experience by covering it in cheap looking garbage.

There may be some perfect case that gives me the best of both worlds, and I do look, but never, ever find it.

This is an easy decision for the iPhone 4. No case.

Now the iPad, that's harder because the official case adds some features and fixes the one issue I have with iPad that... well I don't like living without even though I really really like the iPad design out of a case. I don't like how slipper it is on my lap, and I miss the little case-propper-upper-feature. Otherwise, I'd go caseless there too (just leave a slip case for it in my bag)

Definitely going caseless with iPhone 4 though, and so far not even the slightest sign of scratching even on the metal!

getting the griffon reveal at a third party site for half the price, keeps it small but protects... then i'm gonna get their privacy screen protector to protect the screen and because the viewing angle is too great, I don't like everyone around me seeing what I'm doing..

Generally I do the first year with a case, and the 2nd year with out.. did that with my 3G and with the year uncased it's starting to look used.. 2 years without a case I think would be too much for it, I prefer it to still look new for a while to protect my investment.. also thinking about getting a squaretrade warranty to be double-sure since I'm not sure how much a case will protect against side-impact when it comes to flex with that glass, I feel like side-impact is more damaging then landing flat on front or back with the material
