Anyone with a 16gb iPad?

I have the 16 and I still have 13 gigs free. I have a few apps installed and i use Safari for most stuff. Watch video streaming, so 16 is plenty for me. Haven't put any of my iTunes movies on it yet, but i have all those on my 16gb iPhone and that's not full either. Have no intentions of putting any music on it. So 16 is more than enough for me. It all depends on what you plan to do with it. I got it mostly for web use and ebooks.

Lots of folks saying 16GB is fine, but I disagree. The iPad has only been available for a few weeks, and some people may not see they're devices fill up for a few months, but by then it's too late to exchange. I bought the wi-fi, and returned it 10 days later because I found myself frequently in areas w/o wi-fi, and unable to take advantage of a number a online apps. Speaking of apps, some are fairly small, but others can be large and believe me, they add up. Throw in 2-3 HD movies, a couple hundred songs, and a years worth of family photos and you've got MORE than 16GBs. Also, remember, browsers, and

I think active users purchasing the wi-fi should buy 64GB, and those purchasing the 3G should look for 32 GB since you are able to remotely access files and stream videos and audio almost anywhere.

I have a 16GB and it is doing OK. I downloaded a bunch of Video Podcasts (Well, around 12 or so) and I have 4 pages of apps. I only have 1.7GB left.

And that is with only 4 music albums on it. I keep my music on my iPhone, but the iPad iPod app is so cool looking and I want to use it, but I don't have enough space...

So if you want to put music on it get the bigger one. If not you can probably manage with the 16.

Photographer and Travelers

One great aspect of the iPad is that it replaces a laptop on vacations and trips. I take about 3GB's of pictures a day, which a 64GB iPad can easily handle. The iPad has such great battery life, I would guess that one can go a week without charging if he just used it for copying and reviewing pictures.

If I had the iPad on my recent vacation, I also would've been able to watch movies and play games on the 36 hour flight! Unlike my X300 13" laptop, the iPad is small enough to comfortably position and use on airplane seats.

In sum, the larger iPad opens new possibilities if you go on vacations / trips where the iPad can take the place of a laptop.

Have everything I need on the 16, but want 3G. So, gonna go-ahead and get 32 on the upgrade. In time, apps will be larger since the iPad has such great video quality.

16 GB is enough, but 32 are better...

Hello from Freiburg, Germany, guys!

I have an US iPad with 16 GB and actaually 7 GB free. I have loaded over 150 apps, some mp3 music, some music videos and also some podcasts and less pictures.

I have also an iPhone 3G with 32 GB and for iPhone 32 GB is enough, 16 GB would be a problem and you must sync wisely...

So for comparison: the 16 GB iPad will be enough, if you will take care to upload only what you really want! If you will see a HD video it will be enough... IF you will only copy one big HD video...

Otherwise you must sync wisely over iTunes. But I will also say: 32 MB are better, but why not wait for a 2nd generation iPad with 32 Gb or even 64 GB?

To hold two of that nice iPads is also a nice solution, isn't it?

Just curious - why do you "need" 2 seasons of a show all on the iPad at once. I'm not trying to be argumentative. Just curious as to your thought process. I can understand one season. But 2? And all of the episodes? Do you watch them over and over?

I watched Mad Men on my iPhone (all three seasons) and only had 1 season loaded - and as I watched, I deleted off clearing off more space. Never really saw the need to keep them on the device after watching them.

I travel and like to watch the show when I'm in the hotel. Sorry if it bothers you. I have the space and it seems silly that you would point this out when the OP is asking if 16gb is enough. I'm not seeing how your helping this thread by taking it off topic.

Also I can remove the seasons as I finish watching them. When they're done they get removed. What is there to understand? I manually manage all my music and videos.

That's great you had 3 seasons of Mad Men. Good for you. Want a cookie now?

Don't need HD movies because 1) the resolution isn't HD and 2) Netflix has what I want or I can rip it in a quality good enough to take up less space than a HD movie.

Apps aren't all that big yet and it's doubtful that they will.

A couple hundred songs don't take up much space, especially if you downconvert to 128.

Years worth of photos? Really doesn't take up much space.

I think people should make a decision based on what they need. What you need is NOT what everyone else needs. 16 GB iPads have been selling out faster because people understand that it's enough for them. This thing isn't meant to replace your computer or your iPod/iPhone. It's a compliment to those devices.

I managed 8 gb on a first gen iPod touch and it was more than enough content. Like most you probably have more media than your iPod/iPad can hold so you have to rely on manually managing your content and decide what you want taking up space. I think 16gb should be good enough for most.

Anyway you slice it, your going to love the iPad.

For me 16gb is more than enuff because I don't have a problem switching out content at the end of the day/night.

I have the 64GB and 29GB are filled, and that's only because I've put a bunch of movies and HD TV episodes on it as well. If it weren't for that, I'd have only about 7GB used max.

It's the big media files that will get you. If you don't need to carry around 15 movies and TV shows or gigs and gigs of music (I also have an 8GB iPod touch which is easier for music anyway), then the 16 may be enough for you.

Clearly I struck a nerve which I wasn't even aiming for. As I said in my post - I wasn't being argumentative. Your tone back in the reply sounds rather angry. It doesn't bother me at all what you do - why should it. Whatever works for you! I think you're being over defensive. And what I posted about my usage is valid and not at all off topic.

I understand what you you do and now why. I asked a few questions. Don't let that fool you into thinking I was "judging you" - I wasn't. I simply wanted to know why you do what you do.

And I love chocolate chip cookies if you're offering :)

It's a thread for 16GB owners an owners to be. Why do you 32/64's feel compelled to post and hate on the 16gb? You'd think you would have had enough of that with PCer's hating on the iPad. Now you gotta hate on the 16.
Can't we all just get along?

I have a 32 gig iphone 3GS. I had a 16 gig 3G previously and filled it up easily. With the 32, I've got my entire music collection and a 5-6 movies. Perfect. I chose a 32 3G on pre-order. I've been thinking about bumping it up to 64 a few times since my initial order.

Exactly. I don't listen to music on my iPad. I don't really watch videos. I don't need 32 GB. 16 is perfect.

The smallest capacity Apple devices have always been **** upon. Started with the base model Macs, then the iPod, then the iPhone, and now the iPad. People seem to think that if you don't shell out the money for the top device then you're not as good as them. But when I look at what I've bought from Apple - base MacBook, base iPhone 3G, base iPad, base iPod for 3G, 5G, and iPod nano - I'm happy because i know I'm still getting a good deal for my money and I love my products. The hate isn't needed but people express it.

16 is perfectly manageable, but if you don't want to have to bother picking and choosing what to keep on go for the 32. It is probably worth the $100 for the peace of mind, it can be annoying deleting more apps and videos than you want.

Add the $130 for the 3G model and it starts to add up :(

I'm planing on buying the 16 this weekend but I might grab the 32. Not really sure.
I just think 16GB is enuff to get me through a day then I can just swap content at night. I've never had a device big enuff for all my stuff anyways..
Regardless, I know I'll be happy!

Sort of the same here as well... for me the 3G part is more about my past travels...

Right now it is more about wifi access at work... we have a Mac in our lab... And I know that I can set it up to share the broadband link we have.....

I actually bought the 32 and returned it unopened and got a 16 to save money.

I have less than a gig of music, about 5 gigs of video and 2 gigs of apps and have about 6 gigs free.

I figured that I wouldn't use this thing like my 16gb iPhone. I have about 6 gigs of music on the thing but I realized quickly that I'm not going to use my iPad like my iPhone and have an extensive list of MP3s.

In terms of video I figured that I would only sync what I plan to watch. Right now I have about 4 movies on there, which is about 6-8 hours of content. No point in putting more videos than the iPad could actually play on one battery charge.

Same thinking with apps - only put on there the ones that I would use/play.

What a ridiculously over-reactive response to a very reasonable comment. Wow dude, chillax.

My opinion is that if you have a 16Gb you will be more careful what you put on it. Personally, I'd rather lose 16Gb of data than 32/64Gb and so will back up regularly and choose what goes on. It is possible that it will get lost or stolen.

Is there a way of encrypting [data] files on an iPad?

Chris

I expected to get a 16GB, but I just reserved a 32GB. 16 could be enough, but with 32 I don't have to be so conservative with what apps and videos I use. I still can change it to 16GB, so I will think it over during the weekend. Saving $100 would be nice. :p

Got a 16GB on launch day. Don't regret it. I saved at least $100+taxes for space I would never use. Yeah, I could load up my entire 25GB music library with a 32 or 64GB one. But I have a 4GB "on-the-go" music playlist that fits on all my phones and mobile devices. Then 1GB of pictures, no videos, 5 or 6 pages of apps, 20 books in iBooks, 10 in Kindle, and a bunch of downloaded documents in Goodreader and I don't think I've hit 8GB total yet. I don't know about you, but that's about all I can really "consume."

I'm sure if you load up a bunch of movies it'll add up quick, but I still have room for about 4 full length films if I really had the urge to suddenly watch movies.

My opinion is, don't just listen to those who download or rip tons of media tell you that you don't have enough space with the 16GB. Judge for yourself. Your iPad will still be as cool as theirs if you get the 16GB.

The way I see it, personally, is that even the top dog 64GB model isn't enough to store all my music and video. Not by a long shot, infact. Nor will 128GB which is believed to be the next step. I already have to be choosy with regards to my music on my iPhone, which is my primary music device.

Given that I have no problems with being choosy regarding the content I put onto my iPhone, and that barely any of that content will be necessary on my iPad (iPad as a music player? Really?), I figure 16GB will be plenty enough for me. I imagine the majority of it's storage will be taken up by photos, as when lounging around the house I have the intention of using the iPad as a digital photo frame when not in use.

It really does come down to personal storage. Unless you know that your library of video's and music will fit onto 64GB, then surely some syncing to and from the iPad is going to be necessary anyway?

Yea it is kind of a macho ubergeek thing. Biggest tech toy is best geek, but my opinion is buy what you need not what you want to brag about. It used to be that carrying that stuff around with you had a point because you couldn't use it if you didn't have it. But that is old thinking. With the arrival of the iPad 3G the new paradigm of the iPad is realized. With always connected access to your stuff through the cloud it becomes irrelevant as to whether you store it with you or not. You still have it when you want it. I understand that with the early rollout of the WIFI model it seemed like the old paradigm was still the case as WIFI is not everywhere so get all the storage you can afford and that is still a good strategy if you have only WIFI and are traveling where there is no WIFI at all . But with the 3G model then the new paradigm becomes evident and is why I keep saying that local storage of your stuff is old fashioned. When more data than you can ever hold is available easily what is the need to act as if it mattered how much of a small part of that is on your person. That is sooo 20th century thinking.

If all you have is the WIFI model then you are still locked into the old paradigm so you can't see beyond that. I'm talking about how the world is going to be. I do think if you need storage because of lack of connectivity then you should spend the bucks for the big dog 64GB model. The 32GB model I see as just getting a little bit more memory for a lot of money which would be better spent on getting the 3G model which then gives you almost infinite cloud storage and always on connectivity (in theory anyway).
So if you are wondering if you need to get more than 16GB my response is get the 3G with that $100 and the storage will not be a problem. It's a different ballgame when you do that. If you have the WIFI only model the thing I recommend is to trade up to 3G. You can still get a good price for it from those who do not know the change that's coming. :)
