What a ridiculously over-reactive response to a very reasonable comment. Wow dude, chillax.

Do you really think I am all that concerned with the opinions of 30 somethings who hang out at a Mac forum? You basement dwelling unemployed folks who still live with your parents.
His question was off topic and really when you think of it kind of stupid. Just like your comment. What was the point?

Do you want a cookie too?.
You regulars here are really full of yourselves and take this whole Mac thing and hipster life style a little too seriously. Yeah I said it. Wow ban me. My life will cease to exist cause I don't agree with you. OMG.

Clearly I struck a nerve which I wasn't even aiming for. As I said in my post - I wasn't being argumentative. Your tone back in the reply sounds rather angry. It doesn't bother me at all what you do - why should it. Whatever works for you! I think you're being over defensive. And what I posted about my usage is valid and not at all off topic.

I understand what you you do and now why. I asked a few questions. Don't let that fool you into thinking I was "judging you" - I wasn't. I simply wanted to know why you do what you do.

And I love chocolate chip cookies if you're offering :)

Sorry if i took offense at your question but it was off topic and really just a silly question that I saw no point in being asked in the context of the original posters question. If you really need to know what's going on in my head - well honestly you don't want to really know what's going in this mind of mine. Too much baggage. I'm not a reasonable man. Just a man with an internet connection and another useless opinion. Just like everyone else on every Internet forum.

Only cookies i have are made of piss and vinegar. I'll send you a dozen. :D

There is another factor to consider in the pricing and sizing of the iPad models. I made an on-the-spot decision to go for 16 gig in the Apple Store on April 3rd and one thing was foremost in my mind. I wanted the cheapest model possible. I asked about AppleCare and it only gave me a total of 24 months coverage. I went for it after the problems I had with my iPod Touch. So I was out $600 for the lowest end model with limited "insurance" for a second year of use. I simply didn't feel that the larger models were a good value. If AppleCare had been offered for 3 years, like the rest of my Apple computers, I probably would have gone for the 64 gig model. But with a maximum of 2 years of service available, I wanted to stay at the low end for cost.

Another factor is how long I expect to keep my iPad. After 2 years, my Macbook is feeling pretty long in the tooth. I'd love to replace it but I don't need to replace it. I slapped on an external usb drive and I'll easily get another year or two out of it. But the iPad is a different situation. I expect to want to replace it when new models with more capabilities come out so I opted for a lower cost up front.

The down side is I have to be disciplined about what I install. No 1.7 gig Elements app for me. I'll stick to "normal" 5-50 meg apps and I'll avoid filling the thing up completely with music and movies. I bought mine mainly to avoid carrying my netbook to meetings and it has performed pretty well for this. I don't have a desire to carry around a whole lot of media. Most of my 32 gig iTunes library sits at home and I have only a handful of movies on my iPad. The thing I don't mind carrying around in large quantities is ebooks. They take up so little room relative to other media that I don't think twice about adding to the ebooks on my iPad.

This thread isn't supposed to be about telling one another how to use our iPads or putting somebody down for they way they use theirs. It's about whether to choose 16 gig over 32 or 64 gig. Frankly, Apple is charging too much of a premium for the larger devices. They are known for doing this on their other products and they are doing it with iPad. If there is any way you can see to make do with the 16 gig model, it is the best value with the possible exception of the 16 gig 3G model which isn't out quite yet.

My opinion is that if you have a 16Gb you will be more careful what you put on it. Personally, I'd rather lose 16Gb of data than 32/64Gb and so will back up regularly and choose what goes on. It is possible that it will get lost or stolen.

Is there a way of encrypting [data] files on an iPad?

Chris

The ipad ships with hardware key encryption, all files are encrypted by default and accessed with the key, as does the 3gs. Put a pin lock on and use the admin tools to wipe after three incorrect tries - which blows out your secure key rendering the data worthless. This was the replacement for the 1g and 3g iphone secure wipe, which could take hours, now it takes minutes. Additionally, check the encrypt ipad backups check box in itunes.

I got the 32GB, & I'm completely satisfied. I mostly just use it for iBooks, music, pictures, & Netflix, so space isn't much of a problem. Currently have 20GB filled.

The 32GB model I see as just getting a little bit more memory for a lot of money which would be better spent on getting the 3G model which then gives you almost infinite cloud storage and always on connectivity (in theory anyway).

I get what you're saying. Unfortunately, I live in the sticks. The closest place where I have 3G is about a 40 minute drive into the next city. It would have been completely useless for me to get the 3G model. I'm more than happy with my WiFi model. If something happens & 3G comes to my area, no doubt I'll be stoked to get the 3G model.

Of that 20GBs filled how much is music? I basically see myself using mine for web browsing, netflix, and apps (probably pretty heavy on the apps), but music isn't something I plan on putting on it.

I have about 20 gigs filled on my iPad as well and I don't have any music. I do have about 8 movies on there though...a few of my favorites as well as a couple that I haven't seen yet so that if I am in a situation where I can't get on the internet, I can still have a choice of something to watch.

I will probably keep about 8-10 movies on my iPad and will swap them around.

12.8! I have around 3,000ish songs on it. Songs seem to take up the most space out of my iPod, iPhone, & iPad. I have about 14 or so apps on my iPad & they don't take up much space at all.

I've got about 1,800 songs on my iPad and about 700MB of Comics. 16GB is fine for me because anything that isn't synced to it I'll use AirVideo or StreamToMe to access it off my Mac mini media center.

I have a 16 GB and I'm no where near capacity. I have an 80 GB iPod that I keep all my music on and an iPhone as well that I keep quite a bit of music on as well.

I only keep about 250 songs on my iPad and 3 movies and I have 48 apps and a couple of books. Right now I'm sitting at about 7.5 GB available. so I have no need for the larger iPad since most of my movie watching is done streaming through NetFlix.

I also use the 16 GB. A few movies/TV shows synced but recently got air video. I don't sync music because I use my iPhone for that. I sync a few libraries of recent pics that I might want to let friends look at, but I also use iDisk for that as well. All my PDF's/iWork/Books hardly take up any space, maybe 2 GB max at the moment. I have a few games/apps that use more space than normal ones, but only about 5 or so. It's not hard to manage the space for me.

I'm at a whopping 3.3 GB. About 80 apps, about 70 photos (mostly wallpaper backgrounds), no music because it's all on the iPhone. Two half hour videos. That's it. I'm kinda thinking I made the right call in sticking with the 16GB for the iPad; the money was better spent on the extra memory on the iPhone instead, where it's needed for music and the camera functions.

But as others have said, it's all in how you intend to use it.

One Word: Airvideo

I have the 16GB and its perfect. Because of AirVideo I never really have to put any of my A/V collection onto my iPad... Particularly because airvideo does live conversion of all your videos, if they require it. So if youre particularly interested in having space for videos, airvideo makes GB space less important.

Six Months Later on a 16GB iPad

OK, it's been about 6 months. -ish.

Remember way back when the iPad came out? The big fuss was whether to get either the 32GB or 64GB iPad and why there wasn't a 128GB available.

Imply that maybe a 16GB iPad might suffice and people treated you strangely.

So here I am, about 6 months later with my lowly 16GB 3G iPad.

I use this thing daily. It's about the best mobile device I've ever experienced. I've got music, a buncha pictures some apps and even three or four videos on it. In this short period, it has made itself indispensable numerous times, as well as enable me to surf MR on my lunch break!

The result? TONS of space left! Out of 14 "available" GB, I have 13.0 left!

How can this be? The general opinion was that a 32GB iPad would fill up quickly and the lowly 16GB would be over-run in no time.

I guess Apple was right again. 16GB was certainly more that I needed.

Have Fun,
Keri

You obviously don't have much in the way of movies, tv and music that you carry with you. I have about 20Gb free on my 64GB iPad. 16GB would never be enough for me.

Cheers,

I have a 64 GB 3G and only use about 20 GB. Some of that isn't even necessary, for example I have a whole season of Man vs. Food on there. :D

In hindsight a 16GB woudl have been fine for my needs. Also I use Airplay it's awesome and just so convenient. Download content onto my Mac Mini and then just queue to convert beforehand or use live conversion on the fly.

I have a 16gb iPad. At the end of the day my media is way over 64gb so I can't store everything on there. I simply store my favourite music, all photos within the past 12 months and all unwatched video. By doing this I have used about 10gb. At the end of the day what are you going to watch whilst on the move, if you are going away on holiday you can simply sync a few new movies and take the photos off storing about 8 movies. If your going anywhere that yon might need to watch more then you need to book better holidays. If you use vlc to play .avi movies you will store even more!!!

I've had the 16GB since launch and never filled it up.

Mind you, I do not have lots of music on it since they are all in my iPhone 4. I have about 5 books on it so far, 2 hi-def movies from blu-rays, a few photos, lots of apps.

I stream a lot on Netflix and Air Video (including my blu-rays).

Yes, 16GB is enough for some, including me. :)

I've never filled up my 16gb ad or iPhone. Don't listen to that many songs. Don't like to rewatch movies, so I rent them instead of buying them. Never been a fan of having useless apps on my device. If you are the very opposite of me, you need at least a 32.

I too only have a 16GB, non 3G model. If anything, that would be the only upgrade I rather wished I had sprung for, but with more and more cell phones more than happy to act as a MiFi, it's a regret I hope to fix without having to buy a new iPad. I always need a new phone, but I don't always need a new $629 iPad.

It also used to be a challenge to find a restaurant or a coffee shop that had free WiFi, but now it's the opposite. You pretty much have to go out of your way to find a place that doesn't. All the airports, all the airlines also have it (it's not like you can 3G on a plane, anyway!) and now even the trains are getting it. Just about the only place left is your friends (I might have only a handful that aren't WiFi?) possibly your parents (yeah, like I was going to stand for that...) and um... there's the woods and the car left. Can't say I need to surf the web while I'm hiking, and as far as the car is concerned... It's probably better that I CAN'T get the internet in there. ;)

Alas, if there's anything I DON'T do with the iPad, it's listen to my music... Or watch one of my pre-purchased movies on, so I may also be the wrong person to ask.

Sure, I could watch Zombieland for like, the eighth time, but now that Netflix is at my fingertips... What I have or don't have for movies on my iPad is purely a non-starter for me. The same goes for my music. Not only do I have all of my music on a network server so I can access it from any number of my computers and laptops at home and on the road, I also have two iPods that (heh) still manage to play music, even without any help from my iPad.

I do have plenty of space left, so if I did want to put Zombieland and a few other movies on it, as well as 250 of my most favorite and most listened to songs, or have room to keep some of my newest CD's on... I could still do that and have plenty of room to spare.

If anything, I would say, "Go ahead and get the 16GB model." And if you're the kind of person that wants to be a passenger in a car and checking their email (or that dude surfing the 'net on the hiking trail) then spring instead for the 16GB, 3G model.

In my opinion, that $100 savings could be doing a lot more for you, other than sitting in your iPad as space you very likely don't need, or can live without. You're only a sync away from putting on the latest movie and music purchases on it anyway. :)

16gb wifi owner here. I just couldn't allow myself to be sweet-talked by Apple into plowing up to 66% more for something that'll soon be out of date by the next technology (iPad 2). I'll apply that cost saving to the next step forward. On top of that, 16gb base version does everything most people realistically and practically ever need.

I don't have an iPad (yet) but I can perfectly manage with 16GB. I wont be putting music on it because I'll either use Pandora, or one of my many iPods for music. I'm thinking an iPad would be good for watching TV and browsing the web at the same time.

Basically, I don't mind moving things from computer to iPad when needed (mainly movies) but I certainly want all my apps to fit on it, which should not be an issue.
