It is not enough to need to change your charging schedule. The AOD will use battery, but not enough that it would change how you currently charge (daily, every 2 days, or every 3 days). If I would get a full extra day, or half day from a single charge (AOD off vs on) I would consider turning it off, but I don't.
Thanks but my use case is a little different. I drain it and charge it almost everyday, small and bigger charges, but everyday. I’m a mtnbiker, so 3-5 times a week i ride in wilderness, for 2-3 or 6-8 hours.
I’m doing gps tracking with Strava and often the signal is weak so every hour counts, but I would need to test usage with the AOD on.

Guys what about the oled burn in effect?

Far less than I had anticipated. I have my watch AOD turn off during the night and back on in the morning. There's no significant change in battery depletion.

Agree, I was surprised to find this also. Besides a random and rare night with only 10-15% drain, it seems like no matter what the many many settings I fiddle with, the watch loses about 20%, regardless of Theater or Sleep mode use. I guess I should note this is AW7 so not the Ultra.

I leave mine on, but I can not answer the poll, because the choices have absolutely nothing to do with the question.

Or am I missing something?

It’s a watch. The screen should be on at all times. Hanging on to my Series 4 until the 8 came out was pretty painful in that one regard.

I also just went from a 4 to an 8 and the raise to wake is so much more sensitive that it makes me wonder what’s the point of AOD.
Still I have it on for the moment, but every time I look at it, however little I shift my wrist, the watch has woken.

I currently have the Ultra but I’ve had AOD enabled on my previous 5 as well. I find that to be invaluable in that I don’t have to move my wrist at all, I can just look down and see the time as I could with any standard watch. I have not found that very small wrist movements wake the watch when AOD is not enabled, it has to be an intentional flick of my wrist which is not always possible or convenient.

For me it’s a great feature. Looking better and can see the time on an odd angle without raising my wrist. Surprised to see this many Ultra users disable it with such a good battery life

For years, the biggest complaint about Apple Watch was that you had to do weird stuff to get the screen to come on sometimes. I can't believe anyone would want to go back to those days.

Oh I remember those threads! All the drama about having to turn or raise your wrist. I never minded since it was just a small movement but now with the convenience of just looking down and not having to wiggle my wrist at all I’d never go back.

If you want to maintain the maximum life of your battery, I’d suggest turning it off. It’s reported on here and I have experience myself where the battery health has diminished considerably with it turned on. I’ve also seen complaints already concerning the 14 Pro which uses the same technology.

AOD was the main difference between Apple Watch Series 4 and 5. It was announced as an important update and I think it should be on.

It was very hard for me to turn on the display while riding my motorcycle. I went from a S4 to a S5 just for the AOD while riding. Another benefit was not giving off a false sense of boredom during meetings when I needed to check the time or a notification. The over gesture of turning on the display can mean losing a raise/promotion.

Don’t remind me. 😄 I was still on the original when the Series 4 came out. My battery was on its last legs and nothing was really running well anymore. Remember trying to open an app on those things??

I had been holding out for a major redesign and the Series 4 seemed like the one. I jumped, splurged on the cellular model, and the next year came the always on display.

You know what though? I probably upgraded that thing a year too early. Could have probably made it to Series 9 before upgrading but at this point I can’t imagine having to do the exaggerated wrist flick motion to get my watch screen to come on.

Me too! It was the main reason I got an AW. Can't even imagine not having it on.
You’re right it should be on, but if you plan on keeping your watch for more than a year then expect a serious drop in battery health and eventually a watch that turns itself off by 7.30pm. I had no choice but to turn AOD off to get a watch I can use for an entire day.

My S7 charges so fast I don't even worry about battery. Can charge it for 15 minutes while I'm in the shower and it's amazing how much it charges up. I keep a charger in the bathroom and by my computer so charge level is never a problem. This is my 1st AW and will probably upgrade every 2-3 years so that's not a problem either. I just get the aluminum and am not into the higher priced models. All I care about is features and functionality.

maybe it sounds weird, but for me it depends: when I'm home the aod is off, otherwise its always on

The only time my AOD is off, is when the scheduled bedtime kicks in. 9:30 PM until 5 AM the night before a work day. If I'm off, I skip the scheduled alarm, and turn off sleep.
