App Store prices are going up in the United Kingdom and several other countries starting on February 13, Apple announced today. The changes are being implemented due to shifts in taxes and foreign exchange rates.

App and in-app purchase prices in Colombia, Egypt, Hungary, Nigeria, Norway, South Africa, and the United Kingdom will go up, and prices in Uzbekistan will drop because of a three percent reduction in the value-added tax (VAT) rate. Updated prices are listed on Apple's App Store price chart [PDF].

Prices in Ireland, Luxembourg, Singapore, and Zimbabwe are not changing, but proceeds will be adjusted slightly due to VAT changes.
  • Ireland: Reduction of value-added tax rate on electronic newspapers and periodicals from 9% to 0%
  • Luxembourg: Reduction of value-added tax rate from 17% to 16%
  • Singapore: Increase of goods and services tax rate from 7% to 8%
  • Zimbabwe: Increase of value-added tax rate from 14.5% to 15%
By the end of January, Apple says that proceeds are set to increase for local developers selling in Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand, and Uzbekistan.

Back in December, Apple announced plans to provide developers with an additional 700 price points for App Store apps, allowing for more variation in App Store pricing. Apps will be able to be priced as low as 29 cents or as high as $10,000, and these changes are set to be implemented for all apps in spring 2023.

It's about time for third-party AppStores and competition.
Should be up to the developer to decide if he wants to increase the price of his app or not.
Not every developer wants to slurp on customers wallet.
From the email:

Periodically, we update prices on the App Store in certain regions based on changes in taxes and foreign exchange rates. This is done using publicly available exchange rate information from financial data providers to help ensure prices for apps and in-app purchases stay equalized across all storefronts.

As always, you can change the price of your apps and in-app purchases (including auto-renewable subscriptions) at any time in App Store Connect. If you offer subscriptions, you can choose to preserve prices for existing subscribers.

Two things I'm waiting for in 2023 to hit the Apple App store.
  1. 29 cent App.
  2. $10,000 App.
If you are willing to pay $10k for an App, I'm ready to develop one. :D

I already have an idea, a rotating Diamond with a shiny headline saying "I Am Richer!"
"I Am Rich" was just $999.

Sadly you'll have to wait for alternative AppStores, Timmy don't want you to own such shiny Apps.

That honestly sounds appealing. Out of curiosity, what would a 29-cent App may look like? What can I expect? 🫣

I sell muffins.

My cost per muffin used to be $0.25, and I priced each at $1.25.

Due to inflation, taxes, increased wages, etc., my cost per muffin is now $0.38.

So regrettably, with tears streaming down my face, I am now forced to charge $15 per muffin.

Once inflation eases, I plan to "adjust" my price to $20 per muffin.

It appears that all my colleagues have been doing something similar.

Sounds not good, you could try to enforce a muffin subscription plan.

Alternative business plan:
You sell 1 muffin, and your customer pays off that muffin over a year with $15 per month.
As a goody you could send your customer 1 colored chocolate button

per month for just $12 shipping cost.

Edit: And I take 30%, because it’s my business plan, you know!

I’m not defending Apple, but realistically how many people will this affect and by how much? These days most paid software that’s actually worth owning is a subscription model.

You mean subscriptions like these?

In the near future you pay to turn on the phone, because every phone that turns on uses data and communication with Apple servers. Therefore we need to charge you a small amount due to rising energy/maintenance prices.

The year after that you pay a small amount for turning off the phone, cause you own an Apple device that is not providing data for the growing Ad-business therefore Apple is missing income and needs to charge you a one time only fee per time you turn off your device.

3 years later there is no need for the extra premium for both turning on or off your device, but we will not remove the price charges as it is generating fine income for Apple, this helps us innovating and providing everyone the best in class products that we all love to use.

5 years later Apple is revolutionising the people's lives by giving away their products for as low as $199 for the Ultra-God product models. As we provide products for as low as $199, we will charge you just $5 (equivalent to one starbucks coffee) dollars per day to use an Apple device to enrich your lives with Apple tech.

Now everyone can use Apple devices and we think you're gonna love it!

It’s apple’s fault in the first place if most software moved to that model. With SJ if an app was free to download it could never have paid in app purchases, let alone subscription. If you wanted your app not to be free you’d have to be upfront about it. Of course that changed with Tim Cook who only cares about profit, even when it’s detrimental to transparency or user experience.
