Thought experiment: If there were no app store, you a) wouldn’t have downloaded a dodgy app in the first place, because the dev’s website (compared to the illusion of quality that the App Store creates) would have already put you off, b) you would have been able to fiddle with a demo version before shelling out any money in the first place, c) would have paid with a payment provider like Paypal that added a layer of security to your purchase.
By that logic, there shouldn't be any scams or malware on windows PCs then, since everyone is presumably smart enough to see through shady websites and are always able to get their money back via third party payment options.

I wish there were useful websites like these.
and, some way to use an engine built specifically for searching across an internationally connected network that forms a web of information spread world wide.

Maybe someday.
Just because it’s somewhat available on the web now doesn’t mean Apple didn’t invent a new rule in favor of theirselves and anticompetitively kick out those successful running non-malicious Apps.

Apple is evil, the one witches gives you to die!

Yeah, sucks that you can’t download AppAdvice from the App Store:

I trust apps I download from the App Store way more than I did the Google Play Store when I was on Android. Maybe it’s improved since a couple years ago, but doesn’t matter the App Store has won me over.
That’s your choice then.

‘’it doesn’t mean other app stores don’t have their own security measures in place”

oh wait,

it doesn’t matter if you like it Apples’ App Store or not on the iOS platform, because the App Store didn’t win you over, you had no choice in the matter in the first place.

yep.

I suspect this report is more P.R. Apple has been trying to push a whole narrative of “privacy and security” all the while ignoring the elephant in the room that is MacOS allowing users to use other stores and purchase, download and install from elsewhere.

Apple knows their store is a monopoly and don’t have a leg to stand on.

they can’t stop other countries around the world with the anti-trust measures piling up

growing number of developers criticizing it’s monopoly business

end users demanding more

Apple is clearly desperate, hoping their one way p.r. will change public opinion instead.

Apple’s app Store is a monopoly plain and simple.

anti-competive
anti-consumer

though it’s my own personal taste offers little in the way of big pro apps, games and tools that I can find on stores like Adobe, Microsoft, Steam etc..

so in many ways it’s also

anti-innovative

There is nothing that says other app stores don’t have security and fraud prevention systems in place of their own, and we can’t even compare it on iOS because they are not available on the platform in such numbers to begin with.

and again.

in the end this is a matter of choice for end users. It is a keyword “choice”

choice

choice

choice

but guess what?

If a user likes Apple’s App Store for whatever reason and just sticks to it, that actually isn’t their choice.

They actually have no choice but to stick to Apple app store, which goes to say everyone else whether they like the Apple App Store or not never had any choice in the matter in the iOS platform to begin with.

this whole “I prefer Apple‘s App Store” means nothing!!!

Users had no preference, you had no choice.

I want to see Mac Rumours, 9-to-5 Mac etc... have the guts to actually poll users.

————————

Do you want to be restricted with no choice but to only use Apples App Store on the iOS/IPadOS iPhone/iPad platform

or

Allowed the freedom to choose and use any app store, purchase, download and install from anywhere with the consequences at your finger tips?

This is not heavy handed wording, it’s the actual reality all other MacOS, Windows, Linux, Pc and even some Android users have.

I see, they allowed a castrated version to come back. Totally makes sense a price tracking App without price tracking functionality.

You just cut yourself…

Well there’s scam and malware on the App Store - just because Apple catches some or even most doesn’t mean it’s free from it. My original post was about the fact that people were perfectly capable of spotting malware before the App Store and that a unified store front sometimes makes it harder to spot ‘dodgy’ apps. The person I was replying to suggested that they downloaded a ‘dodgy’ app but were able to return it. Unless they believe ‘returning’ to Apple magically also removes any malware, same rules apply. Also comparing to Windows, let’s not compare apples and oranges, shall we. Windows was infested when malware on OSX was basically non-existent. Now Windows has gotten so much better. What is really needed to protect users is a robust security system (e.g. separate admin and user accounts, background scanning against an up to date database) and user training to be able to detect malware. Training users to accept gatekeeping just turns users into sheep. That’s beneficial only to corporations. I think this whole affair is an issue of extended digital literacy. Teach people to read. Don’t tell them what they should believe. We’re currently in a transition phase and it seems we’re actually moving into the digital dark ages.

Here’s a good quote as well:
“Shwed sells security software—his latest innovation is Harmony, a multi-platform solution to safeguard a whole person, not just a few of that person’s specific machines.”
So, anyone that looks at Apple’s numbers and thinks “I don’t trust them to say anything other than that which supports their business” should absolutely feel the same about this guy. :) If he thought saying “Apple products kill honeybees” would bring more attention to his company, he would! Even the author of the article says, “Unsurprisingly, the man who sells security software wants to sell more security software.” Essentially he feels Android is better because his security software can be installed on it.
If you are only going to believe those experts/reports that support/extoll Apple, then you will have some reason to discredit any articles provided here. Let us see what you have to say about this.

The Whitehouse, Attorney Generals of 35 states, the governments of UK, the EU, South Korea, India, Denmark, and others are with you in thinking that Apple's Appstore is a monopoly. You are not alone.

You just cut yourself…
The app does just what their website does, which is no price tracking. If they WANTED to to price tracking on their website, they could as I use appsliced.co to track prices. THEY cut themselves :D

And the flip side, if Apple provided the raw data, which would be factual...the conclusion could be spun to fit a particular narrative.

And there would be many here claiming Apple juiced or forged the data. And of course they'd have ZERO evidence. Just another whine to get through the day yelling Apple is bad.

Stop posting nearly 3 year old articles. The situation with vulnerabilities and security breaches is ever evolving. You want to base security on the price of an exploit in 2019. That's some interesting internet debate.

Probably have a lot of thoughts run through their heads. Anybody proven anything in a court of law or some judicial process?

What about this?

Based on what we know Apple is doing exactly that; fitting a narrative.
Based on how little Apple really offers (data) it would be interesting to see what really goes on behind the curtain.

No worries. When Apple soon appears before a Congressional committee and is asked for records/evidence to support their privacy/security/spam/fraud/etc. assertions, it will be produced and certified under oath being factual.

Still, people here will claim it's fake while offering zero evidence.

Will they recant their claims and apologize? Of course not. That requires a modicum of backbone and decency.

If you are only going to believe those experts reports that castigate/criticize Apple, then you will have some reason to discredit any articles showing Apple positively. Additionally, you should read, fully, the links you’re posting :) In this case the very last sentence of that particular article,
“Mobile users should not be worried as the overall security of mobile devices is nowadays much better than any laptop or computer,” Bekrar (the founder of Zerodium) said.
says what Zerodium feels about how what they pay for exploits relate to the security of today’s mobile devices.

Not sure what you guys are talking about. I've never had an issue searching for a specific app. Which apps are you having a hard time finding? I don't get it.
You're probably ok, searching for Flappy Birds, or Notes.

Even searching using the exact App spelling will often present you with an Apple re-spelling and the message 'are you sure you want...?'.

That site is just getting their info from Apple. And, as we know from their Apple’s recent infographic, you can’t trust the information Apple provides. It’s just as likely that Apple didn’t close any exploits at all. It’s possible the exploits never existed and Apple’s just saying they closed some in order to paint a picture that they care about security.

ouch. very insightful and definitely on topic.
Not so much insightful as the proof was in the report. On topic as just a comparison since someone shared their opinion that Apple wasn’t being transparent, I simply showed how a lack of transparency can be pointing to another platform and it’s tactics which is known. That’s all, nothing more to it.
