This is not my experience, sorry. They are deliberately throttling all third party options, no matter how cool or hot the thing is running. Its okay as i've given in anyway. They win, I have ordered their damn power brick.
That's unfortunate. What do you use to read?

I only have a Kill-A-Watt (old school plug in the wall) reader. I plan on using that to test with my MagSafe chargers that I'm scheduled to pick up after work later today.

I have the Apple 61 and the 89? MacBook chargers -- along with the Anker 20w PD tiny brick. I also plan on testing my Anker 61W battery and RavPower 30w battery.

Anyone tested with Apples 29/30w charger bricks and the MagSafe? Or would that be the same as the higher ones not being able to support full 15w charging.

And how fast is the phone able to charge with a cable? Is max also 15w?

There’s a youtuber using a meter measure wattage on various chargers. Essentially apples 20 watt charger is the only one capable of 15 watt speeds. Higher watt chargers won’t reach 15 watts. Guess Apple did something to make the charging puck and 20 watt charger work in sync with each other.

Thats not correct, there is an other youtuber which tested 3rd party chargers and they work fine. Today im getting my watt meter so i can report back if it works but if your PD Charger can do 9V and more than 2 amps you should be good. The main problem with those tests is the heat. The Magsafe charger throttles pretty fast if it gets too hot.

not true, third party ones do not work ‘fine’. If this were the case this wouldn’t be such a big issue

Just ine guy claimed its not working and he didnt let the phone cool down. Will report back soon with results.

All these reports about high temperature of the phone throttling the speed- has massive implications in the car where the phone is bound to get hot especially in summer

This person proved it wrong. They do work fine. This is just an attempt to make $ and create outrage from the uninformed.
I dI’d not realize this was a different video from the original video with the same meter, the plot thickens, so does the MagSafe charger reach the full 15 watt capacity with the current Apple 18 watt chargers?

Or if you're just using the phone while charging. I thought the main purpose of MagSafe was to finally solve the problem of not being able to pick up and use your phone while wirelessly charging, and I thought it might be Apple getting ready to remove the lightning port. Now, considering how much and how quickly MagSafe slows down when the phone gets warm, I think it's going to be at least a few more years before Apple can remove the lightning port.

Based on the title of this thread, the definition of working “fine” is reaching the full advertised 15 watt charging capability, yes, 3rd party chargers do work, but I have yet to see any other charger that can meet Apples 15 watt MagSafe charging claim, outside of their own newly released 20 watt charger, which nobody previously owned.
Did you not watch the video you quoted? It shows MagSafe working at full speed with two third party chargers. Additionally, I've seen multiple posts from people getting full speed from the Anker Nano 20W charger.

Full MagSafe speed equates to about 1% charge per minute on the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, just in case anyone is wondering. But even with the Apple 20W brick, MagSafe will slow down if the phone starts to get too warm and as the charge % gets higher.

Yeah, the video showed a 3rd party charger hitting 18w (with loss, 15w to the phone). Like @gtg465x said - you did watch the video yes? :p

Agreed. The MagSafe is the first wireless device I've seen where I can use the phone while it is attached to the phone and - barely notice it. I was surprised.

I was also surprised how most of the heat is in the device itself? My phone felt "slightly warm" but the MagSafe seemed to be warmer. So initially I had put it on the carpet and that may not be the best place for it lol. (It wasn't super hot but I'm sure the carpet didn't help the heat dissipation).

So i did a test myself my charger (Baseus 65W) with a 9V 3 A profile delivers 20 W to the Puck but after a while it throttles down. This could be due to my soc > 50% and heat. So other chargers work if they support a 9 V profile > 2 A .

Ultimately doesn’t matter. None of the third party chargers I used I did the job, all were being throttled meaning I had no choice but to buy apples brick

That was my experience, initially 15W then throttles down in less than 5 mins

Even though I only used the MagSafe yesterday at 85%+ -- it still got noticeably warm. I imagine that's going to be the #1 cause of slowdown. I don't have a way of measuring the heat.

But it can do that even with the Apple 20W charger. It's all about how hot the phone is and what charge percent it's at. Look at the video above and you see the third party chargers at full speed, but then he tries the Apple 20W and it throttles down just because the phone was already warmed up a bit by that point.

Thats normal i guess. If there is an PD profile problem it wouldnt request initially the 20 W. Will di a test with a cooling pad but i think the behavior is the same with the apple charger.

I'm just happy this thing is charging my AirPods :) I just installed it at my desk. Takes a lot less desk space than my 2 other Anker wireless chargers.

Who elses uses a lightning cable?
Who else used a 30pin before that?
Who else used MagSafe 1 connector?
Magsafe 2 connector?

This company has a fairly long history of propriatary cables for certain devices. It's a thing.

--------

Making the iPhone box smaller is so they can get more iPhones shipped per pallet and maximize cost overall.
So a first time buyer has to then buy a charging brick of any kind. Another package.
A first time buyer has to buy some level of wireless headphones or lightning cables. Another package.

Apple claims green, they just see green. It's ok, it is just what Apple does, many people turn a blindseye to it until the moment it effects them.

What magsafe is... is a neat way to align the wireless charging coils.Pretty much it. And for me that's ok.
I like how my watch essentially snap together, I know it's charging. My phone on a flat panel on the other hand, I might lay it down right the first time...well how about the 2nd time...3rd? ...there we go it's charging...i think?.no, yeah, yeah its good.

My Anker is a stand so I get the same charging position every time.

I suspect we will see fully compatible by XMas.
Or sooner.
