My guess is that the Cinema Display will - as the 24" iMac and the older CinemaDisplays - not have a cheap TN panel but a more expensiv (and more vibrant, color rich) (M)VA Panel where LCD screens with VA panels are at least as expensive, most others are acutually more expensive and for VA panels 14ms is quite good.

If I am not mistaken the 24" White iMac had an IPS, the Al 24" iMac did not.

I want to say the Al 24" still do have an IPS. The 20's are I think the ones that lost the panel.

Yes the 24" Al has it, the 20" doesn't.

The 24" LED has great specs

Display

24-inch (viewable) LED-backlit thin film transistor (TFT) active-matrix liquid crystal display

Supported resolutions:
1920 by 1200 pixels
1280 by 800 pixels
1024 by 640 pixels
Display colors (maximum): 16.7 million
Viewing angle: 178° horizontal; 178° vertical
Brightness (typical): 330 cd/m2
Contrast ratio (typical): 1000:1
Response time (typical): 14 ms

From the viewing angle alone, it's most likely S-IPS.

Glossy display instead of matte display and no firewire, no purchase. Note: we always boot from external firewire drives.

In Windows XP you can boot with USB external drives, not sure why did feature did not make it into OS 10.5.

Apple needs to quit boosting prices up. It's getting out of control!
What?

The 23" monitor that this replaced was $899, the same price.

So for the same price, you get a bigger screen plus LED backlight, speakers, and an iSight camera built in. Edit: forgot the MagSafe charger

You again? Note: your college's needs don't define the market for which Apple is designing, obviously. Haven't you guys already switched back to Windows yet?

I'm sure the current 24 glossy one is just for normal customers.
They will release a new line of cinema displays for pros in matte.
Well .. thats what I hope! :(
Same!

Colossal waste of money...underpowered with a ridiculous price tag considering the feature-set

I really think calling this display glossy is a bit off, the new MacBooks and iMacs have a glass panel covering the LCD. This is nothing like the glossy plastic coatings found on the older MBP and MBP models.

Find another LED backlit 24" monitor for the same price.

Find another LED backlit 24" monitor with a MagSafe connector for the same price.

Find another LED backlit 24" monitor with a MagSafe connector and built-in iSight (or webcam) for the same price.

Highly unlikely, with the incorporation of the iSight, Speakers, MagSafe and Glass, the panel is more than likely a (VA) to reduce cost as it offers similar results to an ISP. The wide viewing angle is also shared with (VA) panels. :)

1st, the displays across all apple range apart form the old cinema displays are LED not LCD anymore, they're way brighter and I think you shall pop into an Apple Store and have a look.

2nd, the coating of displays on ALL apple "glossy" displays on MB/MBP/iMac/this one have GLASS coating.

OH, just in case you don't know, the new trackpads as well as ALL iPhone from day one have glass touch interfaces too!

So either this means the MacMini lives and the iMac dies. ;):p:D

but for what it is, it is an amazing price ... try finding a 24" LED screen for anywhere NEAR $900.

Do not underestimate the free market(s). When the rest of the industry rapidly drops they prices Apple in comparison seems to be taking advantage of they customers. Might seem that Apple has an advantage now, but it won't be for long. ;):p

I bought a used dell 30 inch monitor (and its matte thank god) for 50 dollars less than this on ebay. I couldnt be any happier with it. Thats the route i suggest

mac minis are designed with "BYODKM" in mind, it's a value product for those who're not willing to switch everything to mac in one go but just wanna "give it a try" as very reasonable cost. you can easily get a cheap VGA&USB switch and put it on top of your PC desktop and way you go!

I like this monitor. However can you completely close the lid of your Macbook w/o it going automatically to sleep? Or do you have to keep it open to use an external monitor?

Seems nobody can find a similar monitor with similar specs for cheaper and this monitor also comes with speakers, isight, a mic, magsafe charger. As usual complaining just for the sake of complaining.

A) Its not an underestimate, its a realistic spec. They opted not to give bogus response times of something like 0 or -1ms response time.

I haven't followed those threads, but how do we know Apple is giving a realistic spec, and not testing the same way everyone else does?

Response time: 14 ms - I can't believe in this... It was awful for old ones but for 2008-09 model is just joking

Yeah, it's unbelievable Apple isn't lying and making up numbers like everyone else!

All of which your mac already has...

displayport is NOT an apple "proprietary" invention, intel's pushing hard on it too! and as i said similar led displays easily cost you double!
No, but miniDisplayPort certainly IS Apple proprietary junk. Just try to find a cable from anybody else that will conenct to this monitor. I'll save you the trouble - there isn't any.

I agree with you, but I don't think Apple's ever really been concerned about what the free market thinks of its prices. Its Cinema Displays have been pretty much the most expensive things out there for a long time, no? Everyone had better deals than those...

It remains to be seen if anyone else will start using the mini-displayport, no? At 10% of the size of the normal displayport connector, you'd think others might show some interest. I don't think anyone's been able to find-out if Apple copyrighted the mini displayport. IMO, that's what would make it proprietary.
