That doesn't make sense. You must have had an improperly configured screen.

I'm talking about the one in the Apple store and others I've used, the images look blurry and don't look as crisp as the new monitors. The new monitors are a beauty and the colours really stand out. The only problem is that you can see yourself in them.

What?

I just looked at Apple's website when I saw this thread. the new LED model and the old 23"" model are the same price? Who would buy the 23" model then....

the new LED model has everything I wanted (except the price). For $899 and a true desktop experience, they should have thrown in the keyboard, mouse, and an adapter to allow it to run on older white macbooks and macbook pros. then you would almost have the dock people want.

oh well....

I'm still shocked that Apple is not making this monitor compatible with anything other than the new portables. Just seems silly!

Agreed. I wanted one for my white macbook. would have been the perfect solution since we still do not have a dock. But considering that factor and the price...... Instead I just bought a 19-inch LG monitor, 7 port USB HUB, and apple keyboard from best buy for about $300 total - then setup my desk accordingly (I already had some amplified "creative" speakers that sounded sweet). Pretty much accomplishes the same thing, and less expensive.

If you go this route, just besure to get a DVI cable instead of running it off the VGA cable that comes with the monitor - this way you get better resolution and full screen.

Ive seen the new glossy screens in the LEd at the Apple Store, they look great, images nice and crisp, you'll not be disappointed, just calibrate the screen if your doing any print work and you should be ok, i think there aiming them more towards video professionals more.
They might have option for matte or glossy still for 30inch version.

Just found this over at TFTCentral doing a panel search:

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/panelsearch.htm

Apple Alu 24" 12ms G2G 24"WS LG.Display H-IPS (LM240WU2-(SL)(B1))

If this is to be believed then it appears that the new Apple 24" LED Cinema Display is using the same H-IPS panel as the 24" iMac

Apple iMac 24" 12ms G2G 24"WS LG.Display H-IPS (LM240WU2-(SL)(B1))

This makes the new Apple 24" LED Cinema Display more attractive for the price if only Apple decides to provide some backward compatibility.

So apple is going to make the entire cinema display line all glossy?:eek::eek:

Nah, just until they sell the first 250,000 units or so to unsuspecting newbies. Then they can sell the "all new" glass screen "matte" monitors to those desperate newbies with perpetual glare headaches and everyone who wisely waited while those glossy screens hit the dustbin of mac history and eBay at a tenth of their original price. Why sell one unit when you can sell two in the same amount of time?

Apple didn't use to have to do business that way, but when they left the cutting edge behind long ago for 21st century transistor radios (iPods) and walkie talkies (iPhones), that left nothing but nasty marketing tricks copied from the Japanese.

:apple:

Why? That's a terrible TN type panel, meaning horrible viewing angles on a screen that size. It uses "HP Brightview" which is a nasty glossy coating, not pure glass like the new Apple. And it's not LED backlight. Try again...

Spec for spec it's competitive enough IMHO. Not saying it's 100% better or 100% worse, but a very attractive offer that provides a lot for US$200 less.

I would not spend £0.01 extra for the privilege of having magsafe on a fixed screen (different story for laptops where it originated);
I value the pivoting screen much more than having an integrated webcam;
If the screen is going to have a USB hub, it's laziness on the part of the manufacturer not to include a memory card reader (IMHO!)

so, here's what I have to say about the super-revolutionary Apple Cinema Display with Magsafe, LED lighting, iSight and prettyglossycoverthatisbetterthanallotherprettyglossycovers: meh!

There's a big different between TN panels and IPS panels. To the average user who doesn't care about color accuracy it's not a problem, go for the cheaper screen. But those of us who care about color, IPS is the way to go. Better colors, better viewing angles are all pluses.

Would an example of what you're talking be the difference in screen quality between the 20" iMac (TN) and 24" iMac (IPS)?

Pretty much.
Interesting, because some of the threads on MacRumors would have you believe that looking at the 20" iMac screen would make your eyes bleed (it's that bad) compared to the 24" iMac.

So now people are actually defending the same panel (TN) that the 20" iMac uses?

Crazy.

Yeah some people don't know better or can't afford it, which is ok..

Depending on how you use it and what you use it for, a TN panel can be quite adequate. I love my 24" iMac at work (IPS) but I also like my Gateway 24" at home very much. At the time it was one of only 2 available glossy monitors, and I wanted something similar to my iMac. I still think it is great for my purposes.

For the non mac sheeps who doesn't want glossy and don't need an expensive panel but want a large monitor with mulit-inputs should consider the 2709W - 27".

I had the previous 2707 and it's wonderful.

The 2709W has so many inputs it will last you until the next century.

And how much? 899 :)

I don't see the demand over this display. The old one looks more professional in my eyes. The cheezy glass screen finish may match the new models but it looks fisher price to me.

I hope the mag safe and LED are going to convert professionals because i don't see the average consumer splurging on this thing.

I am a consumer and I bought one.

I liked the old ones too, but I think these look great and the iSight, speakers, and ability to charge a laptop in one plug are great details.

I'm excited for this display...

I agree with you. I am a professional that needs screen real estate, and a crisp clear display with accurate color. I can control my lighting just fine. Also, I was always distracted by the "sparkle" effect of the matte display. I think the new display is a really complete package for my needs.

A question please

I just ordered the 24" display and while doing so was a tad confused, as was the sales rep as to whether or not it also required an adapter to connect to the new MacBook - it is not listed on the "what's in the box" but I was assured that no adpter was required.
I would hate to wait until Dec4-10 then find out I can't use it!

Thanks in advance

If you have a new Unibody MacBook or MacBook Pro or MacBook Air (newest revision) then you do not need any adapters for the LED 24" Cinema Display.

Right, .. what sighlent said.

The monitor will come with a cable that has these three ends. The one on the top plugs directly into your MacBook's mini-displayport, so no adapter is required. (or I guess another way of looking at it is that the adapter is already built into the cable) :)

Thanks for the responses, I can relax now

It might be worth mentioning that I told the sales rep I was a retired teacher and asked if there was a discount I was pleased with the reply as the discount was $100 and similar a few weeks ago when I ordered the new MacBook - They did not ask for any documentation, which yes, I could provide but . . . . . . perhaps there are more retired teachers out there? I was ordering from the Canadian site by the way.

I have tried the same with Adobe and even though I was teaching IT using their suite of programs, after I (Gleefully) retired there went the discount which was a sizeable amount - keep thinking I should write a letter . . .
