The USB 2.0 port is primarily for charging only. My guess: maximum charging rate of 34 to 35 watts, since the laptop is based on the A18 Pro SoC.
By that logic i would have preferred the charging/2.0 port to be the 'back' port so a (90 degree) cable could go straight back and out of the way. minor but makes more sense to me that way.

interesting that a 2.0 port is also presumably wired for usb-pd

Probably configured the same as the USB Type C port on the iPhone 17, which supports only USB 2.0 speeds but supports the new USB-IF Power Delivery 3.2 SPR AVS charging standard.

The Neo will almost certainly be heavier (and bulkier) than the Air, so that renaming wouldn't make sense.

The "Neo" name suggests, however, that Apple thinks there's something not just basic or low-end or entry-level, but actually NEW about this model. We'll find out tomorrow, but for the name "Neo" to make ANY sense the new model will need to have some distinguishing feature other than its cheapness. That might mean leaning in to cellular connectivity as with the iPhone, and/or reliance on App Store. Or it might mean some other feature or use case that will take us all by surprise. Or it could turn out to be the next G4 Cube, conceptually wonderful but unsatisfactory in the real world.
Neo is the same weight and smaller than the Air. I still don't think this will do well beyond the initial novelty of it and maybe for classrooms / students.

Always these tiresome false arguments. Why do you think so many users want an iPad with MacOS? Because iPad OS is crippled and simply cannot perform many tasks.

Since there will never be an iPad with MacOS, these people must hope that the new MacBook will be light and compact and offer MacOS users more than an iPad Air can when travelling and on the go.
I don't know why people want an iPad with MacOS when there's a Macbook. I think the iPad already does too much, especially after OS26.

I mean, once you add a keyboard and trackpad, you're not really saving much weight with the iPad. I think maybe what you want is just a smaller 11" Macbook. I think that would be a fantastic option.

• You say "Aside from classrooms, I can't think of a niche this fits into." Well kids are a huge market, plus there is the entry device issue.
• I disagree with "People who want portable computing are doing well with iPads." There are also many folks that want Mac OS and portable.
• Some users like me may buy a Neo just to have a kick around device, leaving critical data on the Big Mac left at home.
It's not clear to me why there's an issue with "MacOS + portable" in any existing Macbook. What dimension is holding you back?

Have you decided now to get a Neo? What other devices do you already have that you want to add this to as a "kick around device"? What are you planning to do with it that your current portable devices are prohibiting you from doing?

I find it very interesting with this argument about portability when there's been such a backlash recently about Apple making things too slim while sacrificing ports and battery life.

i mean it doesnt take too much deep thought.

its cheap, its the smallest supported macos device, and not everyone in the ecosystem already owns a macbook, or previously justified $1000. at $500 it makes sense.

folks inside this venn diagram with these requirements dont stress over the number of ports or raw performance.

even those that do might consider a Neo as a cheap (dare i saw almost throwaway) machine to keep in their bag dedicate to use on the go only, leaving their more powerful system at home/office

i get the curiosity, but not the shock that people have different desires, needs, and requirements.

hope that helps clear it up.

Wrong with the estimation.

599 is good, shame they pushed the SSD upsizing into the touch ID. Do i consider the touch ID essential when I have an apple watch to unlock things (doesnt always work)
I won't care about touch ID, but it'd be nice if MacOS has PIN auth as an alternative, with full password fallback of course.

I mean that’s exactly what the computer / account password is. You can always just make your account password just four digits or something and then that’s all you have to type in when you need to authorize something, just like Touch ID.
