Again don’t say that apple are the same as console makers because they are not
When a console maker releases a generation like the switch it’s on the market from 2018 to 2025 and money made is then reinvested to improve the games industry as a consequence of that where as apple and certain supporters claim that apple are the same as console makers but apple as a company don’t do any of that they use whataboutery like oh we are the same as the games industry but when it’s pointed out it’s different suddenly it’s oh we the same as the car industry and now it’s all about capitalism the Apple strategy use whataboutery
You ignore everything I say, and talk about comparisons and metaphors. I give up, we’re obviously talking about different things and are not going to understand each other.

Epic have consistently said they do have an issue with the commission on console’s however the way the console business is setup then they understand because unlike apple and google when they bring out a console generation it’s out for about 6 to 7 years

That's the same argument you're accusing Apple is doing.

What does a console coming out every 6/7 years have anything to do with a App Store commissions? Does this mean Apple Vision Pro gets an exception? Apple TV? They don't come out every year. What authority said "if you come out with a device every year, then we have a problem with commissions?"
Unlike apple & google every year that’s why it’s different because it makes no odds to them as they are guaranteed that income regardless

Except the Nintendo Switch 1 was profitable since day 1. https://www.vg247.com/the-switch-wi...ninteno-confirms-plans-to-increase-production

And typically people don't upgrade their phones every year.
And typically people buy many expensive accessories with video game consoles (controllers are essential while an iPhone comes with everything you need to play games).

So that means Epic must fight Nintendo. So why aren't they?

Again whataboutery now mentioning Apple TV boxes and Vision Pro let’s break it down to basics
The Nintendo switch came out in 2018 and never got replaced with a new generation the switch 2 until 2025 in that time apple brought out the XS series and the next generation came out in 2019 then the next 2020 then the next 2021 then the next 2022 then the next 2023 then the next 2024 & then 2025 so in that time apple as a company has made money twice or three times in that time frame as well as the iPads that have been released and that is the exact same time frame as Xbox & Sony regarding console industry
Again it makes no odds to apple or google because they are guaranteed people’s money regardless because they don’t make games consoles so it’s not in their interest about 6 billion people have smartphones
A fraction have games consoles that’s the difference

It's not whataboutery because it's following along the lines of your argument.

The Nintendo switch came out in 2018 and never got replaced with a new generation the switch 2 until 2025

It still made a profit since day 1, something of which Epic argues consoles are sold at a loss.

Also Tim Sweeney said developers can "flourish thanks to the App Store"

Yes, and as far as I can determine, the Switch has sold more every year then it did in its first year, which entirely negates your argument.

That’s incorrect because before this started they tried to negotiate the commission down to about 9 to 10% and apple told them to do one and as a consequence of that then you have this situation
we all know they want to pay $0. let's be honest.

no amount is going to be acceptable to them.

Epic doesn’t need to fight Nintendo or Sony. They can chose to do nothing because they think it’s worth the cost, or it’s a risky gamble.

If they have a low risk high reward operunity suing Apple and Google it might pave the way for less commissions on consoles as they gain leverage in negotiations.

Biggest issue is mobile phones at wmore prevalent and important markets for revenue streams than consoles ever are. There might be hundreds perhaps a few thousand developers while the mobile phones marketshare closer to millions

They are completely fine with a commission for IAP, as long as they can use their own for free, or pay for AppStore marketing etc etc.

They don’t want to pay for something they think they can do better

Sorry, I didnt realise you are the legal representative and spokesperson for Epic.

If Epic want to do better then let them do a whole app store outside Apples and make sure they dev the hardware and software.

Then they can be truly unburdened of Apple's evil ways.

I wish them luck.

well yeah apple Makes the hardware and licenses the software.

It’s as far as Ferrari making decisions about its products.

What does this have to do with anything in this topic.

I would exit the ecosystem if it’s actually that bad. Oh wait? I can do that?
I can take a Ferrari and do anything I want to it once I own it. I cannot do that with an iPhone. It’s a locked down device meant to make the world’s wealthiest wealthier. It’s power and greed and if you cannot see that maybe you should rethink some things. I love Apple, but I cannot stand its leadership focusing only on greed. Wish Steve was still in charge.

If that’s your take, fine. I’m okay with that because it’s not the only way to make a phone call, check Facebook or do your banking. Let the market speak.
It’s power and greed and if you cannot see that maybe you should rethink some things.
If that’s your take power and greed fine. I am clear I do not need to rethink anything, which some here in MR should…but I digress) But the market speaks every day as people buy Apple products and services.

I know were into hypotheticals however Apple could have been worse in 2025 had Steve survived.

you CAN do anything you want to an iPhone.
Anything.

you can smash it, you can throw it, you can tear it apart.

you can put any software you want on it (as jailbreakers did)
BUT you cant force Apple to make it easy for you.
or support your efforts.

you buy it and agree to their terms of the software licence.
don't agree? send it back for a refund.

and you have an open alternative that is remarkably feature similar. Android.
go play in that sand pit which offers what you want.

devices were a lot more expensive and niche when Steve was around.

Apple todays is more volume friendly than ever.
And to do that, you cut margins.
saying you "love Apple" but call them greedy... huh? it is demonstrably untrue.

Even Vision Pro is expensive and they admit, not for everyone.
There are powerful expensive devices, and cheaper alternatives in the line.
Phones. Laptops. Watches.

All give you the Apple experience.

Pick any other brand of car and you’d be right, but you can’t with a Ferrari. They’re pretty famously restrictive with what you can do. People have been banned from purchasing new Ferraris for making minor mods to cars they’ve purchased.

We’ll I’m no representative xD, but I can still fathom why they don’t sue others and the strategic reasons for it. As well as be ideologically and personally aligned with what they happen to push on.
Such as wider developer freedom to earn revenue more efficiently, wider competition and user freedom to install software on the devices without apples blessing.

To each their own. Shareholders have to lust AAPL, but customers and regulators need to hold Apple accountable.

You can mod anything you want. People have modified their iPhones. Your argument wouldn’t be baseless if the iPhone operated like the Mac where any developer and any buyer could install anything they want.

Apple has a right to earn from their developer tools, but one must remember without the Apps Apple is nothing. They only steal from and use developers to make their sales. They abuse power and are full of greed.

This is the whole point. The locked down ecosystem Apple says is for privacy is marketing noise. The reality reason is the store is a de facto monopoly. I should be able to install whatever I want. Now Apple could charge way more for developers to access their APIs and etc but then Apple would suffer as it would not be a major player without developers. Small developers that make great apps have them stolen from Apple or worse yet copied by others and Apple doesn’t care and allows it. It’s all due to greed.

Sorry, I wasn’t making an argument, your post just reminded me of how petty Ferrari is with how they ban people for such minor things.
