Apple Acknowledges Mac Mini Update?

Well generally Yes.
The last two have been all iPhone and AppleTV.

True. But the MacBook Air was unveiled last year, and quite a bit of time was spent on discussing it (on stage, I mean). So it does include Macs. Hopefully, this year will be more Mac centered, and less other technology oriented.

How do you define "great" in this sense?

The GMA950 is alright for HD, but complex videos (1080p with high profile H2.64), are tough. But that's more if a software and driver issue. It's fine on Windows, plays BluRay image files perfectly.

But even our 2.4 GHz iMac can't play raw HDDVD files fluetnly, so...

It's up to you Apple. Either I buy my hardware from you after MacWorld, or I go Hackintosh. Getting real tired of buying CPUs with screens. And no, I do not want a big Behemoth crowding me out of my office.

A headless QUIET Mac is a must. The Mac mini is nice, but it would be much better to have a QUIET Mac mini tower. No expansion needed. No PCI slots needed. But raw power: at least 4 core chip and at least 1 GB of RAM for each core. And with at least two Firewire 800 ports to boot from external disks. And Gigabit Ethernet. That coupled with an Apple Cinema Display would be awesome.

Not going to happen. It would be nice, but Apple will not offer a headless Mac to satisfy the pro-sumer branch of the market. At least, I don't expect them to.

This year it will be all about the Mac.

(1) Desktop refresh -
(a) Mac Pro - iCore 7 processors, LED Out
(b) iMac - Minor spec bump, LED screens
(c) Mac Mini - Becomes the Mac Air, gets redesigned, Macbook internals
(d) LED Displays - 20" & 30"

(2) iLife / iWork - '09

(3) Snow Leopard Update

I'm all for that:

- computer module (CPU, ram, system drive, networking, display connectors, USB, etc, no optical drive)
- storage module (big 3.5" HDD)
- optical drive module (choose between, combo, super and BD drive)
- TV connection module (more powerful graphics, Apple-TV connectors, i.e. digital audio and video)

You could have eSata connect all those. The current Mac Mini POwer brick could power a multitude of modules. Think 80s HIFI System, but it's a small computer.

You can buy the bas computer for starters, then add the TV connection module to hook it up to your TV and surround system. Pimp it up with the Hard Drive Module, make it a DVD or BD Player with the optical drive. Add the storage module and you got yourself a kickass media Centre cube.

I'd love Apple to lose the plastic clip paradigm and make it upgradable like the unibody Macbooks (HDD and RAM). Unscrew 6 screws on the bottom, and pull out the hard drive and RAM if you like.

For Developers and Cluster people, you could just stack a bunch of computer modules and have a nice number of cluster nodes with very fast networking.

Does a 3rd party already sell an almost Mini upgrade case? They should.

wow, black plastic would give it that design push that Apple has been aiming to do with all of their products. also the mac mini would be worth buying if they make another one. it would be a great piece of technology for a small price.:apple:

A Mini with the 9400/9600 combo of the macbook pro would be awesome, but of course - no way in hell.

Even just the 9400 would be darn nice, but I would be surprised they'd make it that nice.

Some possible hope for those waiting for a Mini update comes from an unlikely source. One concerned customer reportedly received a response from Apple after firing off a concerned email about the fate of the Mac Mini to Apple's Mac hardware engineering chief:

Given Apple's statement that there are no plans for new products before the holiday season, the next opportunity for Apple to introduce a new Mac Mini is Macworld San Francisco which takes place between January 5-9th, 2009.
Mac mini redesign (with NVIDIA chipset, etc.) at MWSF 2009? Makes sense to me...

The question is: will they keep the Optical Drive, or scrap it a la MacBook Air like the eeeBox?

I would find it extremely foolish to do so on a desktop computer... but would not be surprised one bit if Apple did it.

Yeah, I play blu-ray rips on my 2 gHz Mini just fine - 1080p h.264, vc-1, mpeg2 with DTS or DD using Plex. It's really Apple that's the biggest problem. You'd think they could do a better job at writing playback software.

Make the Mini larger and give it more mini-tower options. Or make it the MacBook Pro of desktops/headless iMac.

If users could at least replace the 2.5" HDD, optical, and RAM many would flock to it. Not having to crack into the thing just to upgrade the RAM would be delicious, and please upgrade the FW400 port to 800, take away a few USB ports and add HDMI and display port.

Then kill the Apple TV and just market a stripped down Mini instead.

I really, really doubt this is legit.

What's the point of phoning one customer to reassure him? Unless it's some new form of communication / quasi-marketing I'm as yet unaware of.

I know this is a rumour site, but this is as flimsy as it gets.

I don't believe it either. I think it's a hoax.

So do I return my mini and pay the 10% restocking fee? I have it set up as a media center and I can return it until Sunday.

Let the rumors begin

Apple knew the mini was a popular machine and to be patient
That confirms it! Apple will soon release a new quad-core Mac mini with a touch screen and upgradable video card. It will replace Time Capsule and Apple TV while being able to dock an iPhone for less than $300. Patience? What's taking you so long. :p

MW only 2 months away!

Hmmm, don't know how reliable a phone call can be, but I am still hanging out for one... Haven't jumped just yet and hey, when you've been waiting this long, what's another two months????

Make it worth it though :apple:!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that sounds plausible! Come on Apple, what's taking you so long? ;)

I'd actually buy one if it came with HDMI and a better graphics chip.
And have the option for a addon (stack-on) BR drive.

i want the Mac Mini to be updated, i always want my brother to get one...

i don't expect there will be great improvement in hardware, coz mac mini still need to be seperated from macbook and imac. and i expect FW will be dropped.

but there should be surprises and twist to give us a reason to own it

and these are my daring guesses

1)updated together with Apple Display, like macbook/macbook pro just did
2)a slimmer design and dropped DVD-rom(!), so priced can be reduced, who wants a DVD-rom will go get the macbook air one. and then the FW will be kept.
3)added a HDMI port to it
