.. an Apple executive care person .. assuring me that Apple knew the mini was a popular machine

i don't know it this forum would be able to take the sarcasm that the above brings in me. so i'll refrain.

hopefully there's an update, I can definitely use a refreshed mac mini for home or work. it would be great.

I'm thinking about picking one up next fall for my significant other to use after we tie the knot. Either that or a new Macbook, after I throw her POS Dell out the window! Also need to upgrade her 3rd gen iPod...

Hopefully the upgraded mini will have the new nvidia graphics chip. I could also see them cutting the size way down, removing the optical drive and firewire. That is, unless they combine it into the :apple: tv, which just makes a whole lot of sense to me. Also: aluminum, glass, and black!

For what it's worth, my ancient 3rd-generation iPod is still going strong.

I don't understand the allure of glass and black. I mean it's fine with me
so long as it doesn't raise the price, but I don't really care what it looks
like so long as it stays nice and quiet.

I got a phone call from "Apple" saying that they were going to transfer $1 million into my account. I'm still waiting.... :(

The way I see it, apple has to have something big for MacWorld.
They've held off on the mini so that they have something.

- It will probably get a case redesign to fall inline with the other Macs
(Or possibly stay plastic like the lowest MacBook to keep it cheap)
- It will have the 9400M. This is a no brainer for performance.
- The Air dropped it's optical drive to reach the goal of the Air; the Mac
Mini is a different beast. Expect the optical drive to be there, but
not Blu-Ray because that's a "bag of hurt". Probably the Super-drive.
Combo-drive disappears from all Apple products.
- Expect Mini Display Port because as Apple has said, it's going on everything.
Yep, you can expect to pay $29 to get your dongle of choice.

Apple give me

Apple give me something good!

I have been holding onto my $600 government stimulus check since May. Wanting to buy a Mini but not with 2 year old tech.

I can buy a quad-core 2.4GHZ Dell or HP with DVD burner and better graphics card for $499. Hackintosh!

Please give me a reason to wait 60 days, like Mini/ATV combo.

Make me a happy consumer and stockholder by offering a greater ranger of current products.

A Mini with the 9400/9600 combo of the macbook pro would be awesome, but of course - no way in hell.

Even just the 9400 would be darn nice, but I would be surprised they'd make it that nice.

I understand the sentiment, but they really can't go with anything less than 9400 grahpics, can they?

I guess they could go with x3100 (as in the white MacBook) but I'm guessing that that would be underpowered for Snow Leopard's eye candy.

Tell me more about Snow Leopard's eye candy that is far more intensive then Leopard's.

I haven't seen it, though betas are out there so we should be able to dig up some reports if we go looking.

But months ago I had heard it would have more demanding eye candy. When they put 9400 graphics in the macbooks I figured that was the motivation.

That's what I thought. I haven't heard anything about additional eye candy in Snow Leopard.

I hope you didn't forget that even the lowly GMA 950 supports Core Image. Didn't the GMA 900 as well on the developer Intel Macs?

mini ha ha

me loves da mini. gots me two-- intel and motorola ppc. but i betcha sara palin's warddrobe that the next 'un won't have a firewire port. maybe the graphics chipset will support WoW but who needs that compared to fast throughput.

Want have Mac Mini in the living room as my media PC....
now imagine if Apple can add the Apple TV features to it and a HD TV Tuner....
thats all I need! Bring it on apple!

This will be a guaranteed seller!

How nice of Apple to feed the rumour mill. :)

Makes sense though doesn't it? There's not going to be much to report in Nov/Dec and they want all the PR they can get.

Has anyone noticed how in the middle of the (claimed) phone call the Apple rep referred to the Mini as a popular machine? Subconsciously, we are now more inclined to think it is popular.

Would love to see a hybrid Apple TV / Mac Mini living room computer. Makes more sense now we're living in an HDTV world.

Sadly, I really doubt this will happen. Apple would lose the iTunes monopoly as quickly as you could say "download Azureus"!

wow, black plastic would give it that design push that Apple has been aiming to do with all of their products. also the mac mini would be worth buying if they make another one. it would be a great piece of technology for a small price.:apple:

Yes i think, the new Mac mini will have a black plastic top and also the new Mac Pro will have a black case (of course it will be out of aluminium, but it will be painted to black).

Yeah they are probably seeing if they can make a unibody Mac Mini; if they can't they'll discontinue it. :p

Yup. I can just see it now... Ahhh I love waiting. It means we can come up with lots of different thoughts on what it could look like. Hmmm, maybe drop the DVD and put a touch screen on it? Or how about like different options with a black backing on the glass, but you could put photos or stuff in it? My wife would go nuts. She has been bugging me to get a mini - one for me and one for her. :)

Yeah, as much as we all want [a midrange tower] to happen, it's not.
...

The point is, the way Apple is going right now, they'll never offer the fabled mid-tower that everyone longs for. That means they'd have to offer compatible drivers for every video card that's put out, and deal with the whining when they don't keep up with the video card companies on drivers. That'd really go against the whole, "...Apple builds both the computer and the software that comes with ..." They wouldn't then.

It'd cost a helluva lot of money for them to support all the new hardware that goes on the market every two months (or sometimes even less), specifically with video cards. It's a closed platform. If you want freedom with hardware, you have to stick with personal computing, plain and simple. Hehe.

end rant.
tl;dr

Apple is never going to let you choose exactly what hardware you want, and hell will freeze over before OS X is sold to run on anything like Windows. Cry more.

There's some truth in what you say, but I think you underestimate the degree of choice we'd have with a midrange, fully upgradeable tower, with no further work needed from Apple. Below is a list of compatible hardware with EFI-X's OS X-enabling dongle (http://www.efixusa.net). Granted, it's relatively limited compared with the PC world, on the other hand there's plenty of choice there compared with one's options with Apple's current computer lineup:

Our first Apple purchase was an iPod mini (green) for my wife.

That led to our first MAC purchase; a Mac Mini!!!

From there we've had LOTS of apple product purchases so it was an entry point fir us to be good and long customers.

An important product indeed.
