As I wrote above I think it has EVERYTHING to do with that patent...

I'll go out on a limb and tie two other rumors together... In a move similar to Amazon's two Kindles will announce TWO tablets, one with a plastic case and an OS level advertising supporting a 3G connection and a second one in an aluminum unibody and standard 3G contract... the higher end model maybe getting an OLED screen too.
Isn't OLED rather energy inefficient (at its max lumen) and low lumen (so it needs max brightness a lot of the time)?

Maybe it will be a Pixel Qi screen.

Solid.

This is brillant on Apple's part, IMHO.

First they paid 1/3 of what Google did for a mobile advertising firm. I don't think Apple needed to buy the market leader (AdMob) since Apple is already the market leader (AppStore). I think they'll do just fine with Quattro.

Second, Apple hs been losing money, or failing to capitalize on all the "free" ad supported iPhone apps. They'll start getting a cut from those free Apps, and don't be surprised to see some sort of incentive to use Apple/Quattro advertising model in the free apps... knowing Apple that might even be as heavy handed as forcing free apps to use Apple's banner ad servers with a revenue split between Apple and the developer... this would devestate AdMob.

Third, recall Apple's patent on ad-supported OSs. I could easily see a tablet's 3G service get subsidized by Apple/Mobile OS served ads.

Finally, the coup de grâce... recall Apple recently purchased a location based mapping company. Suddenly Apple is postioned to do location based advertising on both phones and tablets.

I don't see them getting into generic search advertsing like Google does, just targeted location based advertising and mobile app banner advertising.

I hope not. I kind of like the thought of Apple's laptop not emblazoned with stickers, the likes of "Windows 7", "NVIDIA", or "Intel Inside"... Apple prides itself on aesthetics of the outward appearance of it's machines. Let us hope that the same philosophy will remain with the ever increasing internal ad war. It's bad enough to be taken to a web page and read the article and have the mouse pointer accidently trigger some ad video. Totally frustrating! :(

C'mon Apple, please don't head down that way... Don't "begoogle" us to death with ad sense and click through links. Be :apple:

Dude, have you never noticed the big glowing Apple logo on the back of the monitor? That's more in-your-face advertising than the windows 7 sticker, and it's non-removable!

I wonder if they're going to create an API for iPhone apps (iTablet apps too if/when they exist) whereby developers can simply drop in an ad box and Apple will handle the details of compensation. I don't particularly care for the ad-driven business model, but I think it beats what several iPhone developers I know are going through.

Suspect you are right. As an app developer I'd rather use an iPhone API that guarantees performance, taste (as tasteful as an ad can be), rather than relying on the crapshoot of other methods. Gee, and no flash.

What's that? Apple's planning on releasing a wireless rasor paid for by ads from Schick?

But seriously, we pay a premium for Apple products, partly because we don't have Intel stickers and tons of freeware or ads. I hope this is simply a defensive move to keep Google from eating up more of the ad market, and not a desire on Apple to start infusing (more) types of advertising into its products.

Let's look a little deeper.

As mentioned earlier. There will be targeted ads with Apples new map service. But in the Apple way they will be on-demand and not cluttering up the UI.

Lets go a step further. Based on processor and data center purchases. Apple is probably using Mobile Me as a test for cloud computing. I would say the success is marginal right now at best. But this data will eventually lead to a cloud OS. This would have never been possible before because Apple has always been focused on making money through hardware. Due to the iTunes store they are becoming more software centric. Advertising dollars will make up for the loss of sales in hardware. This means that they will be building a cloud OS that will work on almost any PC. Google is already working on this and may beat them to the punch, but Apple will do it better on the first go-round. The iPhone to the tablet will establish resolution independence and change pixels from the way we know them. Thus opening this all up.

Microsoft will only be making large amounts of money in business machines and will eventually be passed by from the consumer standpoint. Microsoft will fall to the way of IBM in a very short time.

No, I will NOT tolerate ads on devices that I purchased, ever. And I will also NOT tolerate ads on services that I've paid for.

You already do. It's called "the internet." Facebook, Pandora, Hulu, even much of YouTube already integrate ads directly into the content.

It's also called TV and radio.

I'd hate to see ads integrated into the core operating system, but I'm already used to seeing ads in the content I consume every day.

I'm hoping that Apple will go the Hulu model, where the content is free to the consumer, subsidized by the ad revenues. I'd be more than willing to endure ads in, say, a TV show or a magazine, the types of content most people expect the tablet to revolutionize.

And if the ads get me free 3G connectivity (a stretch, I know), I might even put up with them in the operating system or apps. I have a GPS from Garmin that gives me free live traffic reporting. As a trade off, I see a little popup that I could click through to get coupons at nearby businesses. After a week, I see past it completely.

Integrating an "UIAdView" into the OS would probably not be far-fetched. I found out that free, ad-supported apps make more money than selling paid apps. The difference between 99 cents and "free", in terms of numbers of downloads, seems to be three orders of magnitude (in my statistical sampling of exactly one app :) ). Of course, those free apps cost Apple bandwith, storage, review time, etc., while the revenue goes to someone else. I'd like a chunk of that if I were them, too.

See here for an article I wrote about my "investigation".

BTW, I can confirm this "rumor" as I just got an email from a Quattro Wireless representative.

I should start my own advertising company so that Apple or Google will acquire it someday.

I don't think Apple want to play the search or advertising business. That's already Google and MS territory. Moving into their turf is begging to be bitten by a lion. Apple probably acquired QW in order to allow other apps dev to expose their content since there's million of junk games on the iPhone, and to stop Google from exposing too much on the iPhone via advertisment.

You've never purchased a TV or a newspaper? With the TV, my guess is you got it twice... once when you purchased the "TV Device" and the second when you subscribed to cable.

You already do.

No, I don't.

AdBlock Plus FTW.

It's also called TV and radio.

What I watch, I get from Netflix or download it. Also, I've got an eyeTV tuner/DVR. And seriously? Broadcast radio? It's dead to me.

I'd hate to see ads integrated into the core operating system, but I'm already used to seeing ads in the content I consume every day.

Call me a refusenik.

Gah. I would so hate that. I've got a couple sat navs from TomTom, with the operating system altered extensively to better fit my needs, but even stock it didn't have any ads in it, jeebus, that would suck. Live traffic costs $59 a year though, after the first year. I would certainly pay for that if I lived in a major metro area where live traffic is supported.

Honestly? The last TV set I bought was a 13 inch set with built-in VCR, to better skip the commercials. That was, uh, 1995 or so. And you better believe I don't subscribe to cable. WTH for? Ice truckers? The life of little people purchasing bridal gowns in a scripted drama pseudo reality show set in a kitchen?

I am viewing macrumors on a purchased device ( laptop ) and I see advertisements all over the screen. :p

Sucker ;)
Firefox + AdBlock Plus = no more ads.
