If only. Man I miss Aperture. I can’t believe no one has jumped in to fill this void, I keep trying different things, but nothing sticks for me.

Someone has. And he used to be on the Aperture team:

Great. Wonder how long it will remain to be available as a standalone app available for purchase

Well, first Serif, now Pixelmator, independent software makers are just not welcome anymore. This world just sucks.
No one pushed them to do that. They just sold out. Probably business was not going up and not so many people are into subscriptions they have in Photomator, as well as paying high prices for standalone versions of their software. Many companies nowadays do the same. At least I am happy it was Apple, not Adobe

Are you freaking kidding me?!?!

Did you lose your Aperture binaries or something? Wrecking the Aperture / iPhoto combo first, empty promises for years about how missing functionality will come back and be delivered through 3rd party plugins… and now this?

Been using Pixelmator since launch, paid for all versions of their app so have decent understanding what they do. Unless Apple wants to get back into pro photography game (please give Randy Ubillos a call & bag of $$$ to supervise those Baltic boys in case you’re serious) I don’t see the point of this acquisition. There’s a bit of a learning curve behind their apps compared to what is currently in Photos app.

Will be shame to see their iPad apps go :/
Apple just hates photographers, one can tell by how much post processing and fake coloring they apply to images nowadays which in 95% ruins the original picture.

It was quite obvious Pixelmator is about to be acquired by Apple.

They have explicitly said multiple times they will never offer Android version or Windows version, i.e. limiting it to single platform. Also their website looked like literal copy of Apple’s one. They have often been given tons of PR from Apple. Now Apple just decided to get their return on investments.

I liked their Mac app much before introduction of “Pixelmator Pro” (which I needed to buy again, so I decided “no thanks”) but never was into their iOS application which still has no proper layer editing functionality and magic eraser (lol, even Apple has that in photos app! What in the world…). Also these idiots introduced trashbin which ruined experience for me: if I delete I know I want to delete. And one cannot turn it off. Why Pixelmator tried to police me on my decision to delete a project or image without getting it into “recently deleted” first. I don’t like extra steps to delete something

Cool : They'll have a bigger team with infinite ressources.

Not cool : Apple has a tendency to screw up the companies they acquire. Please Apple, don't screw up Pixelmator. Don't.

Tim. I know you read my Macrumors forums account. Please don't kill Pixelmator.

Tim taking time out from dismantling Pixelmator to read your Macrumors account

Apple should have supported Aperture as needed instead of scr*wing all us customers using Aperture professionally. And no: "Apple now has a ready-made Aperture replacement in Photomator" is untrue. Aperture was primarily an images database more than an images editor, and Photomator does not provide pro image databasing. Most pro users did not edit in Aperture, they round tripped out of Aperture into PS for editing.

Not only did Apple kill Aperture, it has done a very poor database job with Photos. Which makes no sense, because both Filemaker and Aperture proved Apple should be capable of competent databasing. WTF?
Man, did I love aperture. That’s why I can’t trust apple with anything photo based. If they choose to stagnate pixelmator to death (for the umpteenth time they kill an awsome app, that is) , good for the people who get money out of this, I guess. Not so great for people who love the app, though.

I sure hope this doesn't become a subscription app or just get rolled into the OS and disappear. I bought the Pro version because it was a one-time purchase and have been using it for years.

A little nervous...
Does Apple have any subscription apps?
I guess Photomator was subscription-based from day one. Tho you can test free version before purchase. I tried it on my 11 Pro and it lagged so much that I just deleted it right away. And 149$ for lifetime is quite too expensive for a mobile application.

Hope Apple just makes it completely free for all iPhones as they usually do. Shazam lost all ads after Apple purchased it

I never used the mobile version. I was referring to the Mac version.

I'm mixed with this one. I love Pixelmator and has been a user since I can't remember anymore. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hope for the best.
If this follows the past the Pixelmator app will be discontinued and the technology folded into a new Apple branded app or existing app.

Not really, FCP and Logic are examples where they didn’t. I hope they don’t do the same here either. I use Pixelmator Pro every day multiple times. It does everything I want it to do. Also, Apple apps like Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are great on the Mac. I hope for the best, but I hate Photos, so I hope they don’t integrate Pixelmator into Photos.

Shazam and TestFlight are owned by Apple for years now. Apple didn't dismantle them. The same goes for File Maker, which is also owned by Apple.

I can see Apple integrating Photomator functionality in Photos, but keeping Pixelmator around as an alternative to Photoshop.

Pixelmator and Photomator are easily the gold standard of iOS and Mac apps, and always the first thing I recommend for people to get when they need to do any photo editing. I'd even go as far to say that Adobe should be watching Apple very closely if anything remotely as intuitive and powerful as Pixelmator Pro is built in to the system. 🤯
I don't see how anyone can make that claim. Photomater still has no capability of editing really basic EXIF info like time and date adjustment despite people asking for it for the past five years. Without that it's not all that useful of an app (IMHO).

Lifelong Illustrator user, and tried Affinity Designer but it’s still missing features.

How does Pixelmator compare to these two?

Wouldn’t mind ditching Illustrator for price alone.

They’ve always had a pretty good relationship with Apple and the apps have always been very “Mac-like”,
I think that's the problem though. These days, most of Apple's products (anything outside of the Finder) is a UI disaster that just about completely abandons Apple's own HIG for design and using Apple-native and visually appropriate controls and ways to work.

So while Pixelmator is extremely Mac-like right now, and btw Pixelmator/Pro should be used as a very high bar and inspiration for other developers looking to make Mac apps. They use controls, layouts, and so on very effectively and it definitely feels like a "Mac App". At least for now.

Now that Apple has it, I have a feeling that it's going to get much less "Mac-like" in future releases, because Apple can't even manage to get much right in their own apps, they're all over the place and seemingly not really following any guidebook or design rules across their apps, or even in a specific app.

Man am I starting to sound like a troll in here lately. Things with Apple are just going downhill, have been for years, but seems to be ramping up as time goes on - in the wrong direction. So I am not such an Apple fan right now.
I still use Apple devices (and thus software and 3rd party software) and wish there was a better alternative, but sadly there isn't. MS/Linux are still far from being a good alternative for long-time Mac users.

So I definitely still don't think this will be a good thing whatsoever.
