Am i the only one to like simple current notification? Anyway any sort of improvements are welcome as always!

Who says competition is a good things, is right but i think innovation is in Apple DNA, Apple tried to innovate and create something new since he beginning also when competition didn't existed.

If Apple is only now starting to work on notifications, we all lose. It's definitely the weakest part of iOS right now. By far.

I was hoping we'd see a major upgrade for notifications in iOS 5.

I think you are. I don't think anyone is against simple, but the current system is just broke on so many levels. For example, I went under 20% power today and had to press 'OK' when I received the message. Why do this? Its not as if pressing OK will do anything. Or, I get an alert from CNBC and this stops my NetFlix stream, that I have to start up again due to the interruption.

Moreover, 'simple' does not have to rob focus from your current apps and demand you stop them to acknowledge messages.

About time for sure! Where were they a year ago when I ditched my iPhone to get a Palm Pre *just* to have a decent notification system.

Apple better get it right with iOS 5, if some teenagers can build a kick ass system-wide notification system in a few spare hours, that's available on Cydia, you'd think Apple could at least do the same. And they need to integrate it with a Bite SMS type of quickreply, having to close whatever you're doing and go into the SMS app to respond to a text is ridiculous. And please don't make it yet another app that you have to check, that's no different than what we have with Boxcar now, it does not fix Apple's stone age notification system.

For those of you who aren't jailbroken, you don't know what you're missing, makes the phone infinitely better in every way.

And for all that is holy Apple give us some widgets finally, it will really look stupid this summer if peoples iPhones around the world are telling them it's 73 degrees and sunny, no matter what the time or weather!!

Doesn't matter why. The problem is not the user. The problem is the fact that Android interfaces with its user in a way that feels like it was designed by engineers. My wife isn't an engineer. She doesn't think that way. I suspect that's not uncommon. Should people only use smart phones if they're programmers?

So, the bottom line is that Apple should give you a way to disable those kinds of alerts or indicate them in a less intrusive way? That makes sense. I can get behind that.

But here's what I'm getting at: what does the lack of a notification queue have to do with it? I'm trying to get at the fact that people complain that there's no notification queue in iOS but I frankly don't want one. I don't need another thing to manage on my phone. I like the badges on the icons--straightforward and simple and nothing to manage or pull down and scroll through. It's just there when I get to the home screen.

It doesn't necessarily have to have a queue my friend. A badge on the status bar to say 2 emails waiting and badge on lock screen also, as well as on the app itself.

THANK GOODNESS.

I'm not gonna lie, iOS needs a refresh to parts of their UI.

A new notification system is a MUST. Also, it needs to be more "smart" (like what Google is doing with their 3.0).

Widgets (Android) or Live Tiles (WP7) are also two "musts" in my opinion.

Finally, a file system for photos, videos, etc would be great.

Personally I'm against third party apps cutting each other's throat to bloat the home screen/get a "cut" in battery depletion.

I only hope the UIAlertView API stays the same, so no current app's functionality "breaks down".

As much as I want to recommend that, it's not worth it. It will cause your home button to malfunction, forcing a respring. Adding a gesture to replace the home button in Activator doesn't work either. Email notifications make the Mail app crash every time you try to open it. Not to mention the developer is pretty silent on the matter.

Not to dis the teenagers but if they built it in a weekend then you'd think they are mostly using stuff apple has built in but haven't locked down enough to publish.

Why?
Apple could have been working with these guys for months. Maybe they have their own API that apple paid to get their hands on. Then when it seemed obvious apple would delete the need for their app talks about buying the whole company. Rumors leaking now so that we all know they got something coming in what we all know is the weakness the competitors have well covered.

Only a few more months to WWDC, I hope that you're right.

You know Apple hired one of the WebOs notification developers a little while after the release of iOS 4. So I would expect a notification system update in iOS 5.

Sigh...

If SJ leaves, iOS will see tons of improvements. But then it has the potential to become dirty quickly if control is not exercised.

This should be the biggest feature of iOS 5. A really amazing notification system, better than Androids.
I think Apple has already created one, and is laying the finishing touches and acquired a company to help out with their expertise.

I really like LockInfo for the jailbroken devices.

How ridiculous. If not for steve jobs you'd be using a treo 950 or a windows mobile 8 phone and thinking it was the pinnacle of smartphone design.

Apple should have acquired WebOS when they had the chance. Oh well, moving on.

Are you mad? Let HP balls it up in style. To swallow up a potentially great OS would of been stupid and left them in bad light.

The notification system isn't disastious but is getting dated.

Someone did mention earlier why the iPhone alerts you at 20% is stupid. I disagree. There's nothing worse than a phone just running dry of juice and you had no chance to do anything about it. Must admit, it could be more discreet.

Anyway, bring on iOS5.

I hope they copy Android's notification system, I love the pull down status bar.

Its stupid that it makes you press 'OK' when it gives you a 20% battery alert. Pressing a button should lead to an action. Here, it does not and that is what is so stupid.

Why? What good would that have done realistically?

No way would they ever dump iOS for webOS. And letting what is good about webOS die somewhere within Apple wouldn't be cool.

They hired the guy who designed it anyway so I'm assuming his influence will show up eventually.

Which is also why this new rumor is so strange. Why hire some random indie developer if they already have in-house talent like that?

I doubt Apple will add widgets or live tiles.

Processing costs power. Having those running will definitely have an impact over the battery life, for limited benefits (occasional glance).

Finally some common sense. I completely agree. And besides battery life.. it also junks things up. I don't need or want widgets or info on the lock screen. These are reasons I've always liked iOS.
