It's the same on all iPhones - all thats happened is the phone decides that theres no room left on the left hand side, because of the 3 icons there taking up a lot of space. The easiest way to see this is to turn on wifi AND vpn - the loading icon then will be on the right hand side of the clock. So this has always been there. Hope this helps.

Yup, I've noticed the same thing. Must just be a room thing....

I have heard from an extremely reliable source (whom unfortunately i cannot name, but am sure many of you would recognize) that Apple's Push Notification Service is completed and ready as of this past weekend. I would therefore predict that it is very likely to be implemented in the next firmware.

why don't we guess who your source is and you can like wink or something when we get it right.. that way your not telling us..

Oh dear.. oh dear.. oh dear..

are you on day release or something?

Took them long enough! If this is any indication as to how far out copy/paste is ... I'm scared!

Nice one, i recently became a Podcast Junkie so this will be great....

once i have an iPhone and wifi!

except that the podcast has to be less than 10mb for download over cell network. Which means, TWIT, Macbreak Weekly, Windows Weekly are all out of the picture.

And I cant understand why you would download over wifi, considering if you are in wifi range, you probably have your computer right by. I do anywy

Great News! I've been waiting on this for a while.

Allow me to explain *why* someone could possibly want over-the-air downloading of podcasts...

I personally find myself sitting around at lunch at one of the local delis near my work. While I am there, they have a wifi hotspot. I tend to hop on it from my iPhone because it's a whole lot faster than 3G.

While I am there, I usually check to see if there are any App updates that I should download, check a few websites and generally waste some time while I am eating before I run back to work.

say there is a podcast that is updated during the day while you are at work. you want to listen to it on the commute back home but can't. until now you can because you can download the podcast locally on the iphone now. webapps like podcaster, etc. don't update as quick either

Very cool. Really a bummer about the 10MB download cap, though. I really don't know many podcasts that are under 10MB so this doesn't seem super useful.

However, it's a bit odd that you can browse a store of some sort for podcasts / apps, but not music. They really need to get the music part of the equation figured out.

of course, not like it would really affect me since I don't buy DRM'd music...

Exactly: meh. Only great news to those Podcast junkies. What about implementing something that EVERYONE with surely benefit from?

Yeah, it will be nice if I am out and about or should if I happen to find myself stuck in the doctor's office for 5 hours! Other than that, I always download podcasts on the mac and then sync. Sure it might be convient but how often will someone really use such a feature?

I definately agree with the above post, give us something that 75% or more will benefit from.

Close but no cigar

While this is a feature that I have been longing for tremendously, and I do think that this is a step in the right direction, I think that the 10mb limit on cellular is kind of degrading. I know that AT&T's network is limited, but I find that the average podcast I download runs at about 40mb-50mb. It's not a problem for people who live and work in broadband/wifi areas, but for those like me who do neither, it's sort of a tacked on feature that can't be utilized. Now if I'm not mistaken, I believe that AT&T's data cap is at 5gb a month. So basically you would have to download over a hundred of these larger podcast on a monthly basis (which is unlikely for most people) to exceed your limit. I just hope that over time AT&T will lighten up on their bandwidth restrictions, because at this point it's crippling the innovation process.

Thanks Apple,

For giving us something that almost NOONE has asked for. On the other hand there's the issue of Copy/Paste, MMS. Anyone?

That's great!

But the restriction seems to only be removed for downloading podcasts. You still cannot buy songs in iTunes and download them unless on a wi-fi connection. Unless they plan to surprise us with this...I do not see the podcast download access over 3G as a major update.

10 MB?! Who makes a podcast that is less than 10 MB? All of mine are at least 30 MB, but the audio ones are under 50. C'mon, eek a little more out of that maximum size...

??? I only have an iPod touch but you can certainly browse and purchase music on it.

LOL... Hey Apple while your goofing off with fluffy stuff, your competition are catching up real soon with real useful stuff.

This is brilliant news. All the hoopla over cut and paste is bandwagon jumping, if I had my choice of one new feature on the iPhone I've always said i would be over the air podcast downloads.

Cut and paste may not be important to you, but every informal poll out there doesn't put "air podcast downloads" anywhere near the top. The majority of people want dozens of features well before they wanted podcast anything.

This is just another example of Apple trying to add features that are either showy or provide a new or improved means of generating revenue. Pretty soon you'll have a "genius" playlist for the apps you download so that they can have another mode of advertising their wares. Then maybe, just maybe, when they've sold 42 billion apps we'll get wifi syncing, copy and paste, email that actually fetches when it says it will, push notifications that were promised two months ago, and the other 5 or 6 top 10 features that millions of people have voted for.

Couldnt agree more. This is yet another Apple update that sounds great until you read the fine print I suppose the limit is a concession to the carriers but 10MB is useless. If Carriers dont want us to use the 'FREE' data on our plan, maybe they shouldnt charge so much every month.

Why are you complaining about a feature which is clearly popular (based on this thread)? Cut and Paste would be great but this is desirable functionality too.

For some reason APPLE are unable/unwilling to deliver copy and paste. No idea why, but I dont imagine that Apple engineers are being diverted from that to this.

LOL... Hey Apple while your goofing off with fluffy stuff, your competition are catching up real soon with real useful stuff.

True. That's all this is. Window dressing. This does not offer a new functionality. People (who have wireless access - like everyone here) have always been able to download Podcasts - so this is really nothing new.

Cool feature...I'm excited for it.

Limited to 10MB? Doh! Just checked...Rush 24/7 podcasts are about 12-13MB each. I bet a lot of others out there are too.

And yes...I would rate copy/paste higher than this but I'll take what I can get I guess...
