I take it that these 1200 new engineers will be focusing on watch bands.
If you listen to the Apple-hate that’s spewed in these forums, you might think so... watch bands, Siri, emoji, Animoji, “iToys”—take your pick of uninformed ridiculousness.

As others have mentioned, according to rumors they’ll actually be working on a baseband processor to replace Intel’s. It’s a heavy lift with many disciplines required. It could easily take 3-5 years if they’re starting from scratch. They’ll be doing a lot of recruiting of Qualcomm talent.

The only people who are happy about the situation are:
Landlords and real estate speculators eager to take advantage of inflated rental prices
Millennials who never had to deal with skyrocketing rent and home prices because they still live with their parents

yeah. Sucks when employers offer good-paying jobs.

recruiting means poaching in this case?

Poaching is a loaded term, but sure, we can use it if you wish. But realize “poaching” is not only legal, there’s also nothing unethical about it. Naturally, employers recruit from competitors—after all, the people with the skills you want are probably currently employed—and employees are free to work where they choose. Of course, trade secrets/confidential information must be respected (and non-solicitation agreements as well). I’m sure Qualcomm has a very well-written NDA, but realistically violations can be tough to prove.

Also, keep in mind California as a general rule doesn’t allow non-compete agreements; they are void. There are some land mines but Apple has very good attorneys. Qualcomm’s best defense is having a great working environment such that people choose to stay and are effectively unpoachable.

Note: IANAL, the above is just, like, my opinion, man.

The location will be next to Qualcomm. With multiple connecting walkways connecting the two buildings. With an underground tunnel connecting the two buildings and in the middle a meeting room for lawyers discussing and hashing over future patents. Modern indoor arena featuring a MMA cage, a boxing ring and a wrestling ring which will have a seating capacity for 5,000 employees. The arena will be utilized by Apple and Qualcomm CEOs to settle any differences that can not be settled by lawyers.

Seems like a lot of employees just for more emojis
We certainly can't have new iPhones introduced without new emojis to go with it!

Sometimes I feel like this growth is leading to nowhere. Certainly, these plans were in development probably years ago when the iPhone was selling like crazy. But with sales slowing down, users keeping their devices for longer, I wouldn’t be surprised if within 5 years Apple starts downsizing. The first sign is when stores stop being profitable and they start closing them down.
I agree this whole "growth" is non-sense. If Apple are the most profitaby company ever what tier, league, space are they going to "grow" into?

Great! One less invite to my holiday parties!

And I don't think it is necessarily a 'states' thing as much as a 'company' thing. Have you been to Seattle? There's a really lax dress code for most of the companies around here. While some companies might still adopt an old-school 'dress code', I don't think it is a state wide mandate.

I might have been generalising then (Sorry for that), I thought it was still pretty bad, if I look at news channels for instance they always have a dress code, like ties and suits for men, you barely ever see that here anymore.
Seems like it's a lot more casual here.
I hate dress code, heck, I always been kicking against standards/what "normal" people do/don't/like/dislike, polar opposite most of the time.

This picture is mostly of elected officials. They dress differently than the rest of us.

This is great news, 1200 engineers should be able to fix Siri.
I strongly believe that problem with Siri is not resources or lack of smart people, its Tim's obsession with privacy, I am not saying its wrong but strong obsession with privacy is limiting what Siri can do.

It seems like Apple is feeling the heat from Samsung's unbelieveable product line. The new Samsung phone DESTROYS the iPhone’s A chip. Johny Srouji is finished. Game over. I highly doubt any of Apple’s stupid innovations like APFS, T2, W1 will stand against Samsung. Samsung is literally building the future with the Fold. The iWatch ain’t it. It’s a gimmick, and NO, it has not saved any lives. NO.

This has nothing to do with A Series processors, this is focused on modems.

And you are comparing a product to a SOC.
