Less than two weeks after the release of the Apple TV 4.2 software update, based on iOS 4.3, Apple has issued a minor 4.2.1 update addressing issues with flickering, waking from sleep, and audio output. The highlighted changes are detailed in Apple's support document covering Apple TV software updates.
- TV compatibility: Addresses issues that may cause the screen to flicker or display incorrect color on some older TVs.
- Wake from sleep: Addresses an issue where Apple TV may not wake up from sleep.
- Audio: Addresses an issue where audio may not be heard on some TV models after switching from another input.
- Stability and performance: Apple TV Software Update 4.2.1 includes stability and performance fixes for Apple TV.
While the Apple TV 4.2 software update brought MLB.tv and NBA League Pass video streaming along with other improvements, some users were experiencing flickering issues on televisions that were attempting to convert the Apple TV's 720p output to 1080i format. Apple last week promised that a software update to address the issue would be forthcoming.

I don't have any of these issues above, but I have noticed that my AppleTV will not turn off sometimes, They need to build an app with an actual on/off button all this holding down until it turns off is not working too well.

:) Apple's little "pet project" with the Apple TV has been getting a lot of loving lately, maybe it's a sign that the :apple: TV is going mainstream?

Concerning the audio issue, I knew this update would come soon.

If the Apple TV can be so easily updated from its Settings menu and is running iOS, than why can't mobile iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) be just easily updated on the fly...WITHOUT iTunes?

Fingers crossed that this update solves or at least improves all the Netflix problems me and others have been having! Time to go download...

I'm betting Apple is using the AppleTV to get this process solid before rolling it out to the other iOS devices. The AppleTV doesn't allow anything to be saved/synced to the device, nor does it have to worry about 3rd party apps, two situations that complicate upgrades of another iOS device.

With Apple TV now running a version of iOS it's much easier to get it updated.

Waking from sleep

Let's hope this finally resolves the waking from sleep problems. This has been a nuisance because I've had to power cycle the device once a week or so due to it not waking up.

Edit: just noticed the audio fix. I had that happen for the first time last night. Nice to see these issues being addressed.

the apple tv stores nothing on it bar some simple settings, that's why. the iphone/ipad/ipod touch have data on it so it's not as simple for those devices

Syncing is a different issue. I just want the OTA iOS updates. It prevents my iPad from actually being a computer as it needs a "real computer" just to function.

can't we have any other screenshot besides Glee for once?

Why, is it because you've seen that episode already? :p

Nice to see they're addressing these issues quicker even if it is because it's running a version of iOS. Whatever it takes, I say.

Well I'm glad to see fixes to these problems that folks have been saying. I plan on getting an ATV2 in a few weeks.

ive seen both the waking from sleep and audio issue so win for me that they're fixed!

Please let this fix the YouTube scrambled subscriptions problem.... Please let it display newest to oldest again

No battery problem with Apple TV but problem with iPhone

New iOS 4.3 seem to drain my iPhone battery like crazy. Anyone experienced similar things?

My AppleTV2 drops the network connection almost every couple hours, sometimes interrupting a movie in mid-stream, and forcing the necessity of a redownload. Annoying. I hope this update fixes that. I never have this problem with my AppleTV1.

BTW, it's time to sell the AppleTV1: How do i get my media off it and onto a computer or HD?

I don't think this tells us much, since it was mostly a reaction to complaints. This shows that Apple is listening, but doesn't mean that they have big plans for this little gadget. Maybe they do, maybe they don't.

you know... there is a "sleep now" option under settings.

I was so annoyed to find that this had happened in 4.2. The main reason I use my Apple TV its to watch the latest videos in my subscriptions. 4.2.1 does NOT fix this, just updated and they are all still in random order. Sucks so bad.
