It "opens the door" for ads. So we're worrying about what could come to pass, rather than what is?
I hear you, this is why I said ‘ads proper’ as in ‘buy a Peugeot today’ but this is still advertising. Promoting their shows or no doubt the shows that Netflix et al gives them the biggest wad of cash to promote.

Remember when you’d bring a new device home, and it’s job was to just serve your needs? I’m getting tired of paying for stuff that just going to sit there plotting how to best manipulate me into meeting its revenue targets.

So let me understand. When I turn on my ATV now, my "home" screen has the top row of Movie / TV show cards. Under that are the icons for Movies, TV, Arcade, Apps, etc. Under that row, I have rows of my apps like Netflix, Amazon, ESPN, etc. The rows each have 5 apps across the screen for as many rows as I want or that my ATV can handle due to storage.

Is that all changing? Will I not be able to have that as my home landing screen anymore? And if this is a server-side change, I won't be able to prevent the change by not updating?

I do not want this. I hate the TV app as it is. This makes it even more monstrous which I didn’t think was possible. Even the recent changes from a few months ago were terrible. Hopefully on the ATV it will remain possible to view purchases from the movies and tv app and continue to skip using TV app.

Good. And thanks. Than I am happy. :D That home screen is what I like beat about the ATV interface. I just want to scroll to the app I want to watch and click on it to watch. I don't want all the crap that the Google TV home screen on my Sony TV has. It;s awful.

Yeah, this is nothing unique or strange.

Only service that does this somewhat okay is HBO Max.

*shrugs* bigger problems to worry about than what is basically industry standard of streaming services
Different though because this is the TV app which aggregates from lots of different streaming services. If Apple had a separate app that was just TV+ then it might be more defensible.

I’m seeing a lot of pushback from Apple focused tech writers (Jason Snell, John Siracusa, the guys at 9to5Mac etc). Wouldn’t surprise me if like the app store ads this gets reversed.

The AppleTV app has always been a content aggregator for many platforms and has promoted channels, rentals and purchases. The purpose of the app is discovery. How is this any different from that other than presenting it in a different way?

So, the featured section thats getting everyones dander raised is just other streaming services advertising their shows. Its not ads for toilet bowl cleaners or other random products that some posts have been hyperbolic to.

The pushback seems rather sensational. With the screenshots I've seen for it on Ventura and iPadOS, it would be a half scroll of a finger to get to Up Next. I'll save my energy if they put advertisements for a car I cannot afford in the middle of season 2 of Severance.

Fair play to those speaking out but I’ve seen some crazy levels of hypocrisy online about this.

For years everyone ragged on Amazon/Google for doing similar but when Apple does it? No problem.

True Apple bias if ever I saw it. Mad. Lol

Once again Apple is becoming the very thing Steve Jobs worked so hard to destroy.

This is squarely in the "make shareholders, bean counters, and sociopaths happy" camp and not "make users happy"

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Apple- Let's "f**k it all up and continue to cram more bs into the apps because we know our users will use it and not complain."

Apple is turning into everything they used to try and trash Google and others on...

Never liked the TV app but have no choice given I have 600+ movies in my library… but this is what you get when you use “free” apps…

Apple is making a big shift toward an ad heavy direction. Much more to come. Probably Facebook-like tracking next.
Apple only disallowed tracking you for third parties. ATT's wording allows Apple to track you all they want. I believe they have stated that "grouping" according to the categories you fit into will be limited to not less than 2000 users. Plus, given the App Store, Apple Pay, etc. Apple will likely be BETTER positioned than Facebook for measuring ad -> conversion rates. Quite simply Apple is going to provide Facebook's ad system, but with better greenwashing (re: privacy), and conversion analysis. There is a reason they expect exponential growth the next few years.

I've used Plex and Kodi/XBMC before that for the last 20 years or so. This year I tried really really hard to switch to the Apple TV app and its integration with other streaming apps. The user experience is such a mess, I just can't do it.

I don't know how anyone would be surprised or consider this as a sea change at Apple.

iTunes, or the Music (cr)app as it's called nowaways, has been an ad-fest for years.
So have iOS/iPadOS devices when you set them up, pushing their Apple Music subscription service.

It's just a further progression down that line.
